Mud Jacking vs. Foam Jacking

Mud Jacking vs. Foam Jacking

If your concrete is cracked and sinking, you can restore it with concrete lifting. There are many advantages to concrete lifting. It is far more cost-effective than a complete concrete replacement, less disruptive to your home, and better for the environment.

How does concrete lifting work?

Concrete lifting can restore concrete that has sunk but is otherwise in good condition. A contractor will drill small holes into the problem areas of your concrete that have sunk. Then, a substance is pumped into the holes to fill the gap below the concrete and lift it to make it level.

Here are before and after photos of concrete lifting by PolyLEVEL Alberta Corp. in Edmonton, an experienced concrete lifting and repair company.

Mud jacking vs. Foam Jacking

You may have heard the terms mud jacking or foam jacking regarding concrete repair. These refer to the two types of materials pumped into the void to lift the concrete.

With mud jacking, contractors use a slurry of sand, cement, and other materials to lift the concrete. With foam jacking, they injected polyurethane foam.

PolyLEVEL Alberta Corp. shares the differences between these two methods and why their PolyLevel® system is the way to go.

Mud jacking is becoming obsolete

While mud jacking was used commonly in the past because it was a quick and cheap solution for concrete lifting. Nowadays, foam jacking is quickly replacing this method.  There are several reasons for this:

It’s isn’t strong enough in some applications: For large concrete slabs that are load-bearing, mud jacking might not be strong enough to lift them without damaging the concrete. If the concrete becomes too damaged, it might still sink over time.

It’s too heavy: Soil erosion and soil dryness is the leading cause of sinking concrete. Mud jacking slurry is much heavier than polyurethane foam. If the soil cannot support the weight of the mud jacking material and the concrete slab, it will likely break down and cause concrete to sink again in the future.

It isn’t waterproof: The materials used in mud jacking aren’t waterproof and can breakdown with erosion. If water drains beside or underneath the concrete slab, it will erode the material over time

Foam jacking with PolyLevel®  is the way to go

While mud jacking might be cheaper, it is not the most valuable and adequate choice. PolyLevel® will have effective, long-lasting results.

It requires smaller holes: PolyLevel® requires fewer and smaller holes drilled into the concrete slab. Because the polyurethane foam is high-density, it can be pumped through penny-sized holes. The foam will immediately fill the void beneath the concrete. As it expands, it will raise the concrete and fill any gap between the soil and the slab.

It is stronger and long-lasting: PolyLevel® can be used on heavy and load-bearing concrete slabs. Unlike mud jacking, PolyLevel® product will not break down due to erosion. It’s waterproof, which reduces the chance of your concrete shifting or sinking again. It also protects your soil from drying out and compresses the ground while it lifts for extra support.

It cures faster: PolyLevel®  injections take a fraction of the time to cure. While mud jacking can take an entire day, the foam is dry in 15 minutes. Foam jacking leaves less mess, which means cleanup will be faster too.
