Moss Removal North Vancouver – How to Get Rid of Moss

Written by AdelCo Home Services in Vancouver

As a North Vancouver resident, a layer of moss lying around your roof  may look comfortable to sit in your home, but this could be bad news for your roof.

Having moss on your roof poses a threat in the long run. To get rid of moss removal north vancouver, follow these steps and make sure it does not fall again.

With your roof covered with green moss – this could make you think you are immersed in a fairytale where there is a strange little, green-roofed house. However, in the real world, moss in your roof is a nightmare.

Left untreated, it can damage almost any roof (wood and asphalt are common, but it is also known to damage metals, clay, and concrete roof), greatly reducing its service life.

The moss starts growing with a thin green layer on the edges, but as it grows, it gradually grows its seedlings as well – allowing the water to drain to the bottom. At this stage, say Hello, rotten and dripping trees – you never want your roof to get to this state.

Fortunately, moss removal is an easy task that you can do depending on the season and a great level of desire to keep the roof looking good and presentable.

Follow the steps below to remove the moss on the roof.

Tools and equipment needed:

Ladders, mold and moss remover, safety goggles, gloves, safety cord, garden hose, soft scrub, pump, spray nozzle.

Step 1: Scrub off all moss from your roofing shingles.

Carefully place the ladder next to the moss-growing area, wear loose-fitting shoes, aged clothing, rubber gloves and goggles. (You can also protect yourself with a safety cord.)

With your hose, wash the area with clean water and wash down at an inclined angle. Then, use a long-scrub brush to remove the moss from the roof and scrub it from top to bottom so as not to raise your shingles.

As the operation progresses, please remove gently (do not scrape, or pound the roof) and make a short section each time the operation continues – this reduces your chances of damaging your shingles.

Note: Do not use a roof washer. Excessive force spraying can damage the beams and shingles that protect the roof.

Step 2: Purchase a DIY cleaning solution to get rid of moss.

If your moss removal problem needs not only simple scrubbing, there are a variety of solutions for commercial cleaning and DIY options for moss removal.

With this option, you could wait for the next cloudy day in Vancouver and add your DIY cleaning solution.

Keep in mind that some commercial and home spray cleaners can damage sensitive plants and cause staining of sidings, or sidewalks, so you may want to distribute plastic sheets underneath your work area before you start.

Whatever you choose, you should follow the manufacturer’s instructions; some cleaners should be washed after use, while others are specified to be left on after use.

You can also use one of the four DIY recipes below to make your moss removal solution in a spray bottle:

– 8 ounces Dawn Ultra dish soap + 2 liters of water,
– 1 pound of powdered oxygen powder + 2 liters of water
– 1½ to 3½ cups chlorine + 2 liters of water
– 1½ to 3½ cups of refined white vinegar + 2 liters of water

For these solutions you want to soak in clean water into your roof with moss, then add detergent and let it sit for 20 – 45 minutes. Gently scrub off moss with a soft brush, then rinse with water.

Step 3: Prevent frequent growth of moss by placing zinc or copper on your roof.

A thin layer of sheet metal coated with iron or copper can be placed under the roof top ridges on both sides of the roof to prevent moss growth from recurring. Copper is toxic to moss and algae, while zinc is less expensive.

You can buy pieces of sheet metals in a roll and cut it into 2 – 4 inches strips. Use roofing nails or screws with a rubber washer to attach the bars to the roof.

You could also try to remove hanging branches that hang above the roof. It is shown that natural light rays can prevent moss growth.

How to put up a garden wooden fence

Is your current fence decaying, battered or ruined by windy weather? Or are you looking to add an extra layer of privacy to your garden? With summer just around the corner, fences are a cost-effective, practical way to add style and security to your garden… just in time for the BBQs. Whether you’re replacing a broken fence or starting completely from scratch, installing a fence can be a tricky task, which is why we’ve created this step-by-step guide on how to do it.

Planning

Start by clearing out the area of any obstacles and plants/shrubs that you may want to replant later on. Using a cable avoidance tool, map out any buried cables or pipes to ensure you don’t accidentally dig up or damage them.

Measure out the length of your garden to work out how many panels and posts you will need. Panels come in a range of shapes and sizes but are usually around six feet wide. Posts should be at least two feet longer than the height of your panels, to give the fence of solid foundation. If you’re going to add a trellis, make sure that your posts are tall enough to accommodate it.

Installing a fence can be hard work, so why not leave it to the experts? The Handy Squad’s team of London Carpenters can do the job quickly and efficiently, meaning you and your family can relax, knowing the job’s in good hands.

Marking

Use string to mark out six feet lengths along your proposed fence to give you an idea of spacing and to keep your work in a straight line, following the land. Measure out and mark two feet along your post – this mark should be at ground level when placing the post.

Though optional, it’s a good idea to treat the end of each post with a spirit-based timber preservative, in order to extend its life and prevent it from rotting in the ground.

If you don’t have all the tools and equipment required, why not call in the Handy Squad? Our expert team will come fully prepared with all the necessary tools, equipment and materials needed to help build your perfect fence. Request a free quote by filling our online booking form.

Placing the post

Using a shovel, dig a hole that is as deep as one third of fence’s height above ground (usually around two feet deep) and approximately three times the width of your post. Place around three inches of gravel in the bottom of the hole. This will provide stability and weight for the post and allows water to drain away.

Once the post is in place, attach wooden stakes to either side in order to keep it level while you prepare the cement. Using a spirit level, check that each side is straight and adjust if necessary.

Securing the post

Pour your dry postcrete mix into the hole, in accordance with the instructions on its package. Once you add the water, you will need to work quickly as the mix will dry and set in just a few minutes. Remember to wear goggles to protect your eyes from the dust, and gloves if necessary.

Mix the cement within the hole, then use a trowel to create a gentle slope away from the post. This will encourage water to roll down and away from your post, preventing rotting. Once the cement has set, fill the hole with soil or grass, to give a natural look. Remove the supports. Repeat this for every post you need to install. You can check that all posts are level by laying a piece of timber across two posts and using a spirit level.

Don’t want to get your hands dirty? Our London handyman services are here to help. At the Handy Squad, we can help with anything from putting up fences, to plumbing and electrics.

Gravel boards

Mark the positioning of an L bracket at the base of each post, then use a drill or electric screwdriver to fix them in place. Drill the gravel boards to the L brackets with appropriately sized screws. We recommend 30mm external grade screws.

Placing panels

Mark out the positions of two U brackets to the inside of each post. One 150mm from the top and one 150mm from the bottom of where the fence panel will be. Secure the brackets with 35mm external grade screws.

Carefully lift the fence panels in position, sliding them down between the U brackets and secure with 35mm external grade screws. If you need some help moving the panels, the Handy Squad can give you an extra pair of hands.

Decoration

To achieve a nice finish and protect end of the wood, you can add post caps to the top of each post. You should predrill a hole before adding each post cap, to prevent splitting the wood.

Finally, you may choose to decorate your new fence. At the Handy Squad, our decorators in London can help with any finishing touches, such as painting and glossing your fence. Do you have any unfinished projects? Our team can also paint roomsrepaint kitchen cabinets and even paint stairs. Request a free quote by filling our online booking form.

Electrical housefire prevention

Written by Blitz Electric Ltd. in Edmonton

Electrical maintenance is extremely important for your home and family. In fact, electrical fires are the third leading cause of residential fires in North America, annually accounting for roughly 51,000 fires, 500 deaths, 1,400 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage.

Of those 51,000 fires, arcing faults are responsible for more than half, causing approximately $700 million in property damage. Faulty receptacles lead to another 5,000 fires, and a whopping 65 percent of fire-related deaths are linked to faulty or failing smoke detectors.

The sad truth—these fires are preventable with even the most basic home maintenance. Here are a few simple tips to ensure you don’t become a statistic:

Home electrical safety tips

Have the electrical system in your home inspected by qualified electricians to ensure that all the electrical meets the safety requirements of the Canadian Electrical Code. Book your electrical inspection in Edmonton with Blitz Electric Ltd. today.

Install smoke detectors on every level of the home, inside each bedroom, and outside each sleeping area. Test smoke detectors and AFCI’s monthly to ensure they are working properly.

Have a fire extinguisher installed in an easy to access location near the kitchen and utility room.

Ask a qualified electrician about installing Arc Fault protection, especially during inspections of older homes or during upgrades of electrical systems. These advanced safety devices recognize dangerous conditions that are not detected by standard breakers.

Use light bulbs that match the recommended wattage on the light fixture and consider upgrading to LED bulbs.

Install tamper-resistant receptacles to prevent electrical shocks and burns, especially if there are any young children in the home.

Conduct a basic assessment of your home electrical system including cords, switches, power plugs, and outlets.

Use extension cords temporarily and never with space heaters or air conditioners.

Look for signs of electrical problems in your home such as dim and flickering lights, unusual sizzling and buzzing sounds coming from your electrical system, or circuit breakers that trip repeatedly. Contact a qualified electrician in Edmonton immediately if you identify any of these warning signs.

Avoid overloading outlets; if needed, consider having additional circuits or outlets added by a qualified electrician.

Remember, even the best electrical equipment degrades over time. If your electrical system is over ten years old schedule a qualified electrician to inspect your entire home electrical system today.

Contact us for all your electrical maintenance needs.

Best-Value Kitchen Renovation – A Quick Guide

Written by Can Do More Painting in Calgary

best-value kitchen renovation

A complete kitchen renovation can significantly transform your home’s overall appearance, especially if your kitchen is connected to other rooms. However, that process is both costly and time-consuming, and you’ll have to find the right contractor to deliver your vision as you pictured it. Well, there are many alternatives that can improve your home’s aesthetic and functional design without setting you back financially. With a quick and best-value kitchen renovation, you can also minimize the disruption to your kitchen and home. So, here are some low-cost changes you can make that have a significant impact.

Cabinet Painting and Refinishing Calgary is a leader in the home design and renovation industry for several years. They have shared their insights on how to get the best value out of a kitchen renovation, so let’s begin!

Cabinet Refinishing

Cabinet refinishing is the least expensive renovation, and it’ll make bring about a significant change. A cabinet refinishing contractor can change the colour and finish of the materials on your cabinets. You should make sure that your cabinets don’t have any nicks, cuts, chips, dents, cracks, and so on for this option.

If some cabinets do show some signs of wear, you can replace the doors on them for approximately $50 per door. The price may vary depending on the type of wood, size, and finish.

Add New Hardware

If you’re considering cabinet refinishing, new hardware can pair well with that. You will also reduce the time spent on the renovation process by replacing the hardware while the cabinet doors are off their hinges. There are countless styles for cabinet knobs, cabinet handles, faucets, etc. For a consistent design aesthetic, you must match the hardware to the style, colour, and finish of your cabinets and the overall theme of the kitchen’s design.

Install a New Backsplash

Another inexpensive option for a best-value kitchen renovation is to install a new backsplash in the kitchen. A backsplash is a material situated in between the kitchen countertop and cabinet where the sink is. There are a few excellent materials to choose from, including ceramic, stone, porcelain, slate, glass, high-end granite or marble, metal, or stainless steel. Each one comes at a different price and offers a unique appearance. Perhaps the most affordable option among these is ceramic.

Consider a New Countertop

A new countertop may be a good option if your existing one is too old and beyond getting polished. In that case, you consider installing a new countertop made of quartz or granite as these materials are affordable options and provide the best value.

An old sink and faucet may look odd around a new countertop. Therefore, we’re sure you won’t regret splurging on new ones if your budget allows it.

Swap Light Fixtures

A subtle yet effective change to achieve the best-value kitchen renovation is to replace your kitchen’s existing light fixtures with new ones. You can pick from modern, antique, grand, and more styles to tie the rest of the design together.

Last Few Words on Best-Value Kitchen Renovation

Any renovation project requires time and money, but you can save on both if you approach the project smartly. Make a list of the aforementioned best-value kitchen renovation ideas and order them based on priority. Once you have estimates for each aspect of the project, you can choose however many fit into your prospective budget.

If you’re searching for an award-winning cabinet refinishing contractor that can install all of the renovation ideas mentioned above, contact Cabinet Painting and Refinishing Calgary today for a FREE consultation!

Interior paint design tips and tricks

Picking the perfect paint colour for your home has many considerations involved in the decision process. There are other existing shades, the room’s size and layout, and even the furniture and décor. Paint can add a lot of value and visual appeal, but the wrong look can also take away.

JCSB Painting in Calgary is a professional interior and exterior painting company. They share some designs tips when it comes to picking the perfect interior colour:

Don’t shy away from neutral shades

Neutral colours like beige and whites can be seen as plain colours that need to be repainted with something bolder. That doesn’t always have to be the case, especially if the room already has lots of colours. Sometimes, keeping the walls a neutral shade helps keep the attention on the décor or a focal feature like a fireplace. Neutral shades can do a lot to complement and accent other aspects, so don’t be shy about painting your walls something simple.

Use the outdoors for ideas

Do you have a room surrounded by windows or a door that connects to the backyard, or a deck? In that case, use the colourful inspirations from the outdoors to connect the two spaces. Soft greens from plants can make for beautiful accents, or colourful shades from flowers will work well on a feature accent wall. Even the simpler earth shades will look well on the interior and help bring that natural connection to the indoors.

Try paint with undertones

Paint doesn’t just have to be a solid choice of blue or green with other accent colours to add more variation. Some paints come with undertones that add much more depth and visual appeal to a room. Greys, for example, can come with blue or even green undertones that will catch the light throughout the day. Some beiges as well have tones of greens and soft yellows to add new interest to the shade. With undertone colours, make sure to bring home samples before you paint the entire wall. Natural lighting tends to reflect against the walls and change how light or dark the colour looks or what tones show.

If you need help picking paint colours, trust a reputable and experienced painting contractor like JCSB Painting. Not only can they help you decide on a colour scheme, but they can suggest appropriate finishes and paint types as well.

An electricians role in your kitchen renovation

The electrical work is a significant part of your kitchen renovation. The placement of appliances, outlets, switches, and light fixtures all need to be integrated into the plan. Sparky Tips Electrical in Edmonton shares things to consider when planning the electrical portion of your kitchen renovation.

General lighting

When wiring your kitchen, there are many directions you can take with your lighting plan. If you’re looking for something simple and modern in your kitchen in terms of lighting, recess lighting is a good way to go. Pot lights can be great, because not only are they efficient lights, but some kinds can be adjusted to be spotlights. Spotlights can direct light towards certain places in your kitchen, such as the countertop where you’ll be preparing meals.

If you’re looking for more of a centerpiece, or focal point, there are many hanging lights that will compliment your recessed lighting. With so many styles out there, you can really showcase your style and draw attention to the room.

Light switch positions

Something homeowners likely forget about is the position of light switches. Depending on how many lighting components are in your kitchen, the size of the switch will vary. It’s a good idea to keep the switches near the light that they operate, especially if there are multiple light fixtures in your kitchen. You can also choose to have switches for the same fixture in more than one location. For example, the ambient lighting might have a switch at both entrances of the kitchen if there is more than one.

Island outlets

If you want an outlet on your kitchen island, it is code standard to install a GFCI protected outlet. Any outlet installed within 1.5 meters of a water basin, including the kitchen island, requires a GFCI outlet. This will ensure you have the outlets required to run small appliances. GFCI outlets will help keep you safe too. They will shut off the flow of electricity when they come into contact with water, senses a ground fault or variation from how the current should be. This safety feature can help prevent electrocution, protect appliances, and reduces fire hazards.

Other electrical features

There are many other electrical features you may want to add to your kitchen. This could include hooking up a vent, garbage disposal, and installing major appliances. You might choose to add dimmers to your main lighting or USB charging ports along the counter. No matter the project, an electrician is there to assist you and make your kitchen renovation process easy.

Full-time electrician Matthew Muhlberghuber at Sparky Tips Electrical will take on any electrical project big or small. Basement renovations have earning potential

A basement renovation has real earning potential. Not only will it increase resale value, but turning it into a legal secondary suite can provide extra income. While it can seem daunting to take on a project that big, the return can make it all worth it. Rental income from a secondary suite can help pay the mortgage and other home expenses.

M. S. Rad Construction in Coquitlam are experts in basement renovations and remodeling. They offer services throughout the Lower Mainland and Vancouver. Here are some ways you can transform your basement into a liveable suite:

Beautiful and functional kitchen

Every home needs a good kitchen. Though basements aren’t always that spacious, there are many ways to incorporate a functional kitchen. Include storage solutions to make a place for everything. Install upper cabinets for more storage, and to utilize wall space. Also, when it comes to materials, choose something durable, moisture-resistant, and easy to maintain. Because basements are prone to moisture, you want materials that can stand up to that.

Bed, bath, and beyond

When it comes to bedrooms, simple can be best. Neutral paint and decor will make the space appear cleaner, and allow tenants to make the space their own. You can’t go wrong with a clean slate. This goes for bathrooms, too. A modern look with clean lines can entice potential renters because lighter colours can make the basement feel like it’s not underground. Even if you decide not to rent out the space, your family or guests will enjoy these light, neutral spaces.

Be smart with flooring choices

For basement flooring, it’s best to choose something warmer to the touch and resistant to moisture. This could mean installing carpet in bedroom spaces to keep them cozy, and something like vinyl throughout the remainder of the basement. There are different types of vinyl flooring that can appear like tile or hardwood floors so you won’t have to sacrifice looks for function.

Lots of light

Allowing lots of light in your basement is key. Natural light with windows and smart electrical lighting will help the suite feel open and bright. Recessed lighting paired with appropriate task and ambient light will ensure the living spaces are well lit. Any sleeping spaces require an egress window for safety. If you’re replacing windows, go for larger windows and dig deep window wells to let the natural light shine in.

What Is The Best Type of Siding For Your Home?

Blog written by Let It Flow Exteriors in Edmonton

Positive first impressions of your home are important. Whether you are trying to sell your house or looking to be proud of what you own, curb appeal plays a big part in this.

The type of siding you have on your house, and the condition it is in often dictates this. If you have faded, dirty siding the curb appeal goes down, and vice versa. This is why it is important to make sure your siding is looking the best it can. This can be as simple as washing off any dirt, or even as complex as completely replacing any siding. Let It Flow Exteriors are experienced siding contractors in Edmonton. We offer various siding types such as Vinyl, Aluminum, Fibre Cement. Each of the options has its pros and cons along with their associated costs.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is the most popular siding option available today, being used in most new homes and renovations. It is available in many different styles such as Board and Batten, Dutchlap, and Horizontal.

Pros

Inexpensive: Vinyl siding is the cheapest siding option available ranging from $2.25sqft – $6.50sqft.

Low maintenance: Vinyl siding will never need to be painted and is extremely easy to clean as all you need is a hose.

Wide variety of Colours: Vinyl siding comes in a range of colors to perfectly match your needs.

Cons

Low return on investment: Compared to other siding options available, vinyl siding offers a lower return on investment

Aluminum Siding

Aluminum siding is the least popular siding option available, popular in the ’50s-’80s aluminum siding is found on older homes. Often now only used as an accent or on higher-end homes. It is available in horizontal and board and batten.

Pros

Durable: Aluminum siding is extremely durable depending on the thickness, only becoming damaged when faced with extreme impact.

Resistant to damage: Fire, water, rot, and insect resistance. Due to it being metal, aluminum siding is extremely fire resistant, will not rust or rot, and will keep any creepy crawlers out of your walls.

Cons

Expensive: Aluminum siding costs anywhere from $3.75sqft – $9.50sqft to install.

Fades: Aluminum siding is extremely susceptible to fading in the sun.

Fibre Cement Siding

Quickly becoming one of the most popular types of siding on the market, fibre cement siding is being used on more and more homes. It is quite popular with high-end home builders. It is also favoured by house flippers as it often adds value to the house where’s typical vinyl siding does not.

Pros

Durable: Fibre Cement is much more durable than vinyl and aluminum siding, more resistant to fading, chips, and splitting.

Realistic look: Due to the thickness of the material it allows for deeper grains in the board, giving it a more realistic wood look then other siding options, this means better curb appeal and a natural look.

Fire, Moisture, Rot, and Insect Resistant: Fibre cement siding is fire resistant, meaning it won’t melt or warp when exposed to heat and won’t combust easily. It is also moisture resistant meaning it wont swell or rot in humid climates. It is also resistant to insects and pests. You won’t have to worry about things like termites or other critters.

Great Return on Investment: Fibre cement siding typically holds 70% of its cost when reselling your home, meaning if you spent $20,000 on reselling your home, it’ll add $14,000 to your home’s value, on top of the curb appeal.

Cons

Expensive: Costing between $6sqft – $14.50sqft, fibre cement is the most expensive siding available on the market. This is due to the costs of material, along with the weight of it which typically requires two installers or special tools to install.

Fades: Fibre cement siding will typically need to be repainted every 15 years as the color fades in the sun.

Overview

Each type of siding available has different pros and cons to it. Some are cheaper, some are more durable, some offer more value to choosing it. As a homeowner, it is important to do your due diligence and research the product that is right for you. At Let It Flow Exteriors we offer expertise that can help you along in the process from choosing the type of siding for your home all the way to the final install. Serving Parkland County and surrounding areas we offer eavestrough, soffit and fascia, siding, and faux stone installation.

Reasons to renovate the kitchen and bathroom together

Bathrooms and kitchens are two of the most popular rooms to renovate and for good reason. Both renovations offer great ROI, are used daily, and do a lot to boost resale and attract buyers. Instead of choosing between one or the other when it’s time to renovate, pair the work together. You get twice the benefits with less stress and time spent.

Intellisight Handymen Ltd. in Calgary is a professional handyman and renovations company. They share more about the benefits of renovating your kitchen and bathroom at the same time:

Do all the plumbing at once

Typically, when renovating bathrooms or kitchens, the plumbing and fixtures are involved in the change. Keeping fixtures up-to-date can add a lot of visual appeal and interest to a room. It is also important to keep plumbing both maintained and up-to-date. Broken pipes, low-efficiency faucets, or just worn-out designs take away from the room or risk high costs in water damage repairs. Upgrading to low-flow faucets in the bathroom and kitchen, for example, will help save on monthly water bills.

When you do all the plumbing work for both rooms at once, it’s more efficient in time and labour. This can help save money in the end.

Create flow in the design

If you are renovating the main floor bathroom, it’s a great chance to create a sense of flow throughout the space. Having similar elements, whether paint colours, flooring design, or countertop material, creates that connection. In the bathroom, draw elements and design ideas from the kitchen as inspiration. Use the same cabinets and fixtures, for example, or a similar colour scheme but in a lighter or darker shade. It’s also a great way to combine materials, like flooring or countertop materials that pair well in the bathroom and kitchen.

Save time and cost

A downside is that you can lose temporary access to both the kitchen and bathroom. It’s not ideal, but in a renovation, it must be considered. That’s why renovating the two spaces together can save that time and wait. The work will go faster together because you can order the materials for both rooms at once. Cost-wise as well, you save having to hire a construction team twice for two different rooms. Together with your general contractor, you can put together a schedule and timeline that meets your needs. Any permits, materials, or labour that needs to be done can be paired together so the work can be done more efficiently.
