All you need to know about combination boilers

High efficiency, cost savings, and convenience are generally three key features when shopping for a new boiler or water heater. Both units play a big role in day-to-day life, which makes the right investment important. Why not invest in a two-in-one option?

Convertible Heating and Air Conditioning in Toronto is a professional HVAC company. They share more about their combination boilers and why they’re a good idea for some homeowners.

What is a combination boiler?

Also known as combi-boilers, these units provide both hot water and central heating. Despite being a combination, the unit itself is just as highly efficient to run. It’s equipped with two separate heating exchanges, one for the hot water and one for central heating. The unit also has sensors inside that act as signals to heat the water or provide heat to the house.

Pro: compact size

Similar to hot water on demand heaters, the combi-boiler is a much more compact unit. One main benefit of a combi-boiler is that it takes up one space instead of two. That is the perfect way for smaller homes or families to ensure convenience and efficiency are still guaranteed. The unit can be stored wherever it is convenient, such as wall-hung or on the floor. If space is limited, wall-hung are great out-of-the-way options without being visually distracting or dominating.

Pro: safer and efficient

ENERGY STAR-certified combi-boilers have a fuel efficiency rating upwards of 95%. That not only makes the unit eco-friendly, it also means greater savings over its 15-year lifespan. Without a physical tank holding the water, combi-boilers are also safer. There’s no risk of sediment build-up or burst pipes causing health or home damage. The heat exchangers in the unit also limit lost heat as in other boilers, reducing carbon monoxide emissions.

Con: no doubling up

If you live in a larger home or have a higher demand for hot water, a combi-boiler may run into issues. This type of boiler can’t support multiple showers or baths running at the same time. The sensors built into it can only separately heat water or provide heat. Without a tank, hot water is also limited and might not meet the demand for larger families. It’s important to check the water pressure at the water main as that decides the unit’s own pressure power.

Con: no backup water

Separate hot water tanks come with an immersion heater installed onto the top of the unit. The heater acts as a backup means of still producing hot water even in the case of an emergency. In a combi-boiler, there is no immersion heater. If the coils in the unit or boiler break, there won’t be heat or hot water until the unit is repaired.

Mud Jacking vs. Foam Jacking

If your concrete is cracked and sinking, you can restore it with concrete lifting. There are many advantages to concrete lifting. It is far more cost-effective than a complete concrete replacement, less disruptive to your home, and better for the environment.

How does concrete lifting work?

Concrete lifting can restore concrete that has sunk but is otherwise in good condition. A contractor will drill small holes into the problem areas of your concrete that have sunk. Then, a substance is pumped into the holes to fill the gap below the concrete and lift it to make it level.

Here are before and after photos of concrete lifting by PolyLEVEL Alberta Corp. in Edmonton, an experienced concrete lifting and repair company.

Mud jacking vs. Foam Jacking

You may have heard the terms mud jacking or foam jacking regarding concrete repair. These refer to the two types of materials pumped into the void to lift the concrete.

With mud jacking, contractors use a slurry of sand, cement, and other materials to lift the concrete. With foam jacking, they injected polyurethane foam.

PolyLEVEL Alberta Corp. shares the differences between these two methods and why their PolyLevel® system is the way to go.

Mud jacking is becoming obsolete

While mud jacking was used commonly in the past because it was a quick and cheap solution for concrete lifting. Nowadays, foam jacking is quickly replacing this method.  There are several reasons for this:

It’s isn’t strong enough in some applications: For large concrete slabs that are load-bearing, mud jacking might not be strong enough to lift them without damaging the concrete. If the concrete becomes too damaged, it might still sink over time.

It’s too heavy: Soil erosion and soil dryness is the leading cause of sinking concrete. Mud jacking slurry is much heavier than polyurethane foam. If the soil cannot support the weight of the mud jacking material and the concrete slab, it will likely break down and cause concrete to sink again in the future.

It isn’t waterproof: The materials used in mud jacking aren’t waterproof and can breakdown with erosion. If water drains beside or underneath the concrete slab, it will erode the material over time

Foam jacking with PolyLevel®  is the way to go

While mud jacking might be cheaper, it is not the most valuable and adequate choice. PolyLevel® will have effective, long-lasting results.

It requires smaller holes: PolyLevel® requires fewer and smaller holes drilled into the concrete slab. Because the polyurethane foam is high-density, it can be pumped through penny-sized holes. The foam will immediately fill the void beneath the concrete. As it expands, it will raise the concrete and fill any gap between the soil and the slab.

It is stronger and long-lasting: PolyLevel® can be used on heavy and load-bearing concrete slabs. Unlike mud jacking, PolyLevel® product will not break down due to erosion. It’s waterproof, which reduces the chance of your concrete shifting or sinking again. It also protects your soil from drying out and compresses the ground while it lifts for extra support.

It cures faster: PolyLevel®  injections take a fraction of the time to cure. While mud jacking can take an entire day, the foam is dry in 15 minutes. Foam jacking leaves less mess, which means cleanup will be faster too.

Concrete Lifting in Edmonton

PolyLEVEL Alberta Corp. is a commercial and residential concrete lifting and restoration company. They have the expertise and technology to fix your sunken concrete with their proven PolyLevel® system. They also offer concrete sealing for those joints and cracks. Ask about their lineup of exclusive products. They offer  NexusPro® joint sealant and SealantPro® concrete sealant. These sealants can extend the remaining life of your concrete by up to 3 to 5 times!

Creating the Ultimate Basement Suite

If you’re looking for a way to bring in additional revenue, and have a basement space you never use, consider building a secondary suite. Not only will it be a steady source of income, but it will add to your home’s resale value. MLI Property Enhancements in Calgary shares some tips for creating the ultimate basement suite that will attract quality tenants.

Living space

The central part of your suite will be the main living space. A great living space feels open and inviting, and needs to have good lighting. If possible, install large windows with deep window wells. This will allow in more natural light. Complement that natural light with a smart electric lighting plan. Recessed lights are common for ambient lighting, but layer the lighting with task and accent lighting too.

Throughout your living space, it’s also a good idea to keep things on the more neutral side. That means light, neutral wall colours, simple flooring patterns, and other finishings. This allows tenants to truly make the space their own, as you are providing them with a blank slate. Plus, lighter colours will help open up the space so it feels less like a basement. Read how to make a small basement feel more spacious

Kitchen

If you want to make the basement suite feel more spacious, you can start with the kitchen. When designing the kitchen in your basement suite, keep size and function in mind. Installing upper cabinets provides more storage without taking too much space. Try a mixture of stock cabinets and custom cabinets. The stock cabinets can help you keep the budget low, but custom cabinetry will give you more options for creative storage solutions. This is ideal when the space is a premium.

Similar to the living space, clean lines can go a long way in your kitchen. Whites and greys keep a kitchen looking fresh and new. Simple light fixtures that continue to highlight the room are also an effective way to attract potential tenants.

Bed and bath

MLI Property Enhancements can provide advice for the best layout for your bedrooms and bathroom downstairs. There may not be enough room for a tub in the bathroom, and that’s okay! They can help make sure the shower has the design and function necessary to make up for it. You might also consider having the bathroom and laundry in the same space if you don’t wish to share the laundry machines with your downstairs tenants.

To be to code, the bedroom must have a large egress window. Any sleeping space needs a window that can be easily used as an escape route in the case of a fire. Plus, that bigger window will bring in more natural light. Keep the room’s wall colours light and neutral, and make sure to add a decent-sized closet.

Basement Renovations in Calgary

At MLI Property Enhancements, they understand that they are guests in your home. They live by the “golden rule” — they will never treat you differently than they would want to be treated. Their contractors also understand that not everything happens according to plan, but it’s how they deal with these surprises that sets them apart.

Signs it’s time to change your home’s colour scheme

There are many reasons why you might repaint your home. If you’re doing a renovation or your walls were damaged and have been repaired, a fresh coat of paint will complete the look. Or, if you want to modernize your home and prepare it for sale, painting can be a cost-effective upgrade with good ROI. What if you’re just tired of how your home looks and are ready for a change? That’s a good reason too!

Contemporary Coatings in Calgary is a professional painting company offering both interior and exterior work. They share some tips and signs that your home may benefit from a new look:

Your dated paint colours aren’t up-to-date

The easiest way to decide on a change is to look at the latest colour trends and see what’s popular and what’s not. If you’ve noticed your home is a bit out of date colour-wise, it might be time for modernization. While the trends do change every year, that doesn’t mean you have to get the paintbrushes out yearly. Following general shades will help keep your home in touch with popular trends. Then you can swap out your accessories and decor if you want. That both keeps the home’s value up but also ensures that it will always be appealing to potential buyers. When or if the time comes to sell, a major painting overhaul won’t have to be done.

Your interior décor (and your taste) has changed

Changing pillow covers, furniture or other décor is often done to match the seasonal outdoor colours. When choosing new interior paint colours, an easy design tip is to pair the colours with your home’s décor. If that décor has changed and there are new shades, check to see if your wall colours still work. Too many different shades or even too few can overwhelm or take away from the room’s overall appeal. If you enjoy regularly changing the interior décor, choose neutral wall paint that will work with various other colours every time.

You want to create a relaxing space

areas of the house like bathrooms, bedrooms, or living rooms, can be used as relaxing, quiet spaces. Even a private home office or sitting nook is a great place to create a home getaway. A monochromatic scheme, often paired with modern décor, is an easy way to create relaxation. The blend of a monochromatic base colour complemented with light and dark shades helps bring balance and calmness. If you want your home to feel more relaxing, talk to the professionals at Contemporary Coatings for some paint colour scheme ideas.

6 Reasons Why You Should Buy Laminate Flooring

Blog written by Quality Red Tag Floors in Edmonton

How Laminate Flooring Improved In 2021

We have all seen laminate flooring. Each person has their own unique experience with laminate. Some people love it, and other people have had not so great of an experience. The first thing to understand is that not all products are created equal. Discuss with your sales representative the different ratings and qualities of the laminate flooring that you are looking at.  Some companies will provide a free onsite flooring estimate Edmonton.

In this article, we aim to discuss the positive aspects of choosing laminate flooring in 2021. There are many features that have improved laminate flooring over the years. These improvements are what make laminate a great 2021 flooring option for all levels and rooms of the house!

Let’s get started!

Improvements in Core Density

Laminate flooring historically has been known for issues like expansion and low resistance to moisture. It is not uncommon to see older style laminates with issues like gapping between planks and swelling around the joints. Example of laminate floor swelling below.

Improvements in the density of the core play a huge role in the quality of laminate flooring. A good laminate flooring Edmonton will have a high-pressure core (HPC). A high-pressure core is similar to a traditional laminate core, with the difference being in the amount of material that is compacted into the same space. Take a 12mm laminate with a normal MDF (medium density fiber) core for example and put that against the 12mm laminate with a high-pressure core. The difference will be apparent in both the weight and feel of the product.

Another benefit of a denser core is it provides significant improvements to the sound-dampening qualities of the product. This is an important feature and should not be ignored. A noisy product can be annoying both in the room that is installed and between levels of the house. A quieter product can pay dividends on your daily enjoyment of a flooring product. Pair this with a sound reducing underlay and the results will change your life!

Benefits of a higher-pressure core

– stronger joints
– more solid feel when walking on it
– higher water resistance to swelling and water damage
– better sound reduction

Locking System Is Stronger Than Click Vinyl

The locking system on higher density products is of course stronger. This ties in with the previous improvement of a higher density core. Better core = better joints.

The higher density core plays a huge role in keeping the joints engaged, and your product firmly attached together. The joints are significantly improved on laminate because of the high-pressure core. The types of laminate to avoid are those with a lower density core. More commonly known as MDF core. A medium-density core does not provide as stable or strong of a product.

The other main advantage to stronger joints is not only will they stay together better, but they will also perform better under stress. The stronger joints will provide better stability over flooring imperfections. These minor defects in your subfloor would typically need to be patched and prepped, but with a stronger laminate, many times you can float right over the top of these areas.

Benefits of a stronger locking system

– less chance of gapping
– easier installation
– floatability over flooring imperfections
– install over longer distances

Warmer on the foot

Everyone hates a cold floor. Well, almost everyone. But it goes without saying that a warmer floor is generally more enjoyable, especially through the cold winter months that we experience in Edmonton, Alberta. Thicker denser laminate provides not only a barrier between the cold floor underneath but provides excellent insulation value to keep your floor warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer.

Scratch Resistant

Laminate is highly scratch resistant! Many people who have had the benefit of a higher quality laminate can attest to this. With the highly durable ceramic top layer, laminate is one of the best performers in the industry when it comes to resisting scratches and everyday wear.

One thing to know when shopping for laminate is how to differentiate the wear ratings on laminate. Laminate is rated with an AC rating (abrasion criteria). AC1, AC2, AC3, AC4 are all options.

AC1 = Low traffic residential

AC2 = Medium Traffic Residential

AC3= High Traffic residential

AC4 = Medium Traffic Commercial

Using the above as a quick guide, you can see that AC4 will perform the best when it comes to scratch resistance. Try to always look for the AC4 rated or higher as a commercial rating for traffic is an excellent rating for a busy household.

Texturing

Ever see a gorgeously textured hardwood? The kind that is hand-scraped and distressed? Something about the imperfections and textures of a hand-crafted hardwood draws the eye and creates a cozy warm feeling.

Laminate, while is not a solid wood product, does have a highly dense wood-based core. This allows manufacturers to include a lot more texturing in their products. One of the more amazing processes is the hand-scraped style laminate. The result of hand-scraped style laminate is stunning and often looks more expensive than someone would guess.

The benefit of laminate is that it provides texture that is far more realistic than can be done on other products.

Water-Resistant

This is a newer more foreign benefit. Water Resistance in laminate is something that may take some getting used to. We have all seen at some time or another the ugly bubbling/swelling effect that happens when water comes into contact with a regular laminate flooring.

With new technology, manufacturers are providing water-resistant laminate flooring. This expands the opportunities in both color, texture, and style. Take the open concept, for example, you would require flooring that can go throughout the whole main floor. This includes the kitchen and bathroom. Finally, there are water-resistant laminate flooring products that can go throughout the whole house!

Large Improvements to Laminate

The list of the improvements that we have covered creates a strong argument for laminate in the home. With an array of choices on the market, it’s important to know the difference between your standard laminate and your higher quality product.

We believe that laminate is a great choice throughout your whole house and should definitely be considered as an option when beginning your flooring search. Be sure to ask the laminate flooring store in Edmonton, about the pros and cons of all products that you shop for so that you can make an informed decision.

As we work to keep you informed, happy renovating!

Expert Approach to Window Cleaning in Vancouver

Written by AdelCo Home Services in Vancouver

Every building deserves to look its best. And to be honest, we as business or homeowner do our best to keep our property in its best conditions. We sweep the floors, mow the lawns, and cut down weeds and overgrown shrubs.

However, there is always one part of the building that we usually leave uncared for. And that is the windows.

Even while we are aware that the windows contribute significantly to the beauty and ambiance of our properties, we rarely include them in our cleaning routine.

After all, clear windows make room for a bright and clear sunlight. And with Vancouver’s weather, you want to get the best of the sun every day.

For most of us, procrastination is the only thing stopping us from having a clean, clear window in our homes and offices – And by extension the best of the sun.

But the truth is window cleaning is a tedious task. It is not an activity that you can just wake up to. Especially with multi-storied billings. Setting up scaffolds alone is time-consuming enough.

Hence, it is best to just leave it to professional hands to handle. Ones who care about your properties’ cleanliness as much as you do – and would stop at nothing until every unit of it is sparkling. If you happen to be in Vancouver, Adelco homes are your best bet when it comes to window cleaning services. Either for residential or business houses.

Adelco Home Window Cleaning Services

Adelco home services offer you all you need to keep your windows clean and sparkly.

It takes a skilled hand to remove tough stains like paints, stucco, and smudges that have accumulated for months without damaging your window panes. Our professional hands are trained to be delicate while being thorough on dirt and stains. To keep your windows clear in perfect conditions.

In a bid to reduce time spent on cleaning – many cleaning agencies and firms opt for harsh chemicals that are both dangerous to your building and the environment.

Having gone, above and beyond the industry standards, we can boldly tell flaunt that we are accredited by bbb.org.

Adelco homes go the extra length to use eco-friendly cleaning agents. They are clear of corrosive contaminants that would otherwise reduce the lifespan of your windowpane.

But perhaps, the major edge we have over the industry is our staff. They are our secret weapon.

Polite and well-groomed, our staff and cleaners are always eager to offer their services, with bright smiles and neat clothing. In return, we ensure adequate compensation for them as well as insurance against accidents. That’s one other thing you don’t have to worry about when you work with us.

Adelco homes services also provide our services in a timely fashion. We are always on time, so you don’t have to alter your plans to accommodate us. We fit right into your schedule.

While cleaning a wide span of window glasses, it is easy to miss stain spots. That is why many other cleaning agencies make a mess of window cleaning – with windows that are bright and shiny on the outside but are still stained with smudge and dirt whenever you pay closer attention.

But our cleaners have been trained to look out for easy-to-miss spots and crevices, you are assured of a thorough cleaning job.

How to prepare your home for April showers

It’s finally springtime in the northern hemisphere, which means longer days, blossoming flowers and lots of baby animals! Unfortunately, spring also brings April showers. It’s easy to get distracted by the warmer weather and get caught off guard when it starts to rain. So, here are our top tips on how to prepare your home for April showers.

Check your gutters

During spring, we get to watch trees come back to life and bloom beautiful flowers. Unfortunately, foliage can easily fall into your gutters and clog them up, causing drainage issues.

It’s a good idea to clean them out before the April showers hit, or the rainwater may be blocked by debris and forced to spill over the sides, potentially leading to expensive water-related damages. Alternatively, clogged gutters can lead to sitting water, which can cause rust and algae growth.

It’s possible to clean your gutters yourself with a ladder, some thick rubber gloves and a garden hose. If you don’t want to get your hands dirty, you can always hire a company to do the job for you.

Check for leaks

After a long winter, it’s important to check your home for leaks. Any structural flaws or damage like holes, cracks and gaps may allow water to seep in, which could result in flooding or mould growth.

On the roof, look for missing, warped, rotting, peeling, broken, blistering, or buckling shingles and fix them immediately. Also, check for loose material or wear around chimneys or vents.

From the inside, keep an eye out for dark spots, sagging, spots where outside light shines through and ceiling cracks.

Got a leak in your roof that you don’t know how to fix? The Handy Squad’s London handyman service is here to help. Our expert team can assist with all your roofing and guttering needs. We can also fix ceiling cracks and repair leaky taps. Request a free quote by filling out our online booking form.

Check sealer

Caulking can crack and shrink during the winter months, so make sure to repair the seal on your doors and windows in time for April showers. Properly sealed windows and doors will also hold cool air in during the summer months, saving you money on air conditioning!

Has your house been feeling cold lately? The Handy Squad’s decorators in London can help reseal all your doors and windows. If this isn’t enough, we also offer a draft proofing service! Request a free quote by filling out our online booking form.

Flood prevention

If water runs towards your house rather than away from it, you need to solve the grading issues before the spring rain attacks. Try finding ways to divert the water, like installing a French drain. Check that your street drains are working properly and aren’t clogged by any dirt or debris. If you believe a drain is blocked, alert your local council immediately, as it could result in flooding.

Pamper your lawn

After a harsh winter, your lawn may be looking a little lifeless. Refresh your turf by seeding bare patches and removing weeds before they multiply. A well-kept lawn should be flat and even in order to prevent areas of flooding when it rains. It’s also worth servicing your lawnmower – you’ll be using a lot more for the coming months.

Benefits of Concrete Maintenance

It’s important to maintain your home’s concrete, whether it be your driveway, sidewalk, pathway, patio, and more. There are many ways to properly maintain your concrete surfaces. From the contractors at MZ Solution in Vancouver, here are some benefits of concrete maintenance for your home’s concrete surfaces.

Keep it free of mould

Damaged concrete can trap water on the surface. Mould can develop when water sits in your concrete. Whether it be your driveway or your home’s foundation, it’s important to get this fixed right away. Deteriorating concrete and mould growth can diminish curb appeal and the strength of your concrete. Concrete sealers can prevent mould from growing. A concrete contractor will be able to address the problem and make the best recommendations. They can seal the cracks, remove any mould residue, and make your concrete surface strong and stable again.

Keep the curb appeal strong

Over time, concrete can fade, crack, or lose the appeal it had when first installed. Driveways are one of the first aspects of your home guests will see, and you want to keep it looking good. There are a couple ways to revamp the look of your home’s concrete. One way is to power wash it to get rid of plants, dirt, and any other debris that may have built upon the surface. You could also get a partial repair, where there are small damages that need fixing. Cracks are sealed, as well as the surface, and you’ll have a new, smooth surface. A concrete contractor can return your home’s curb appeal to its former glory, and keep the surfaces functional as well.

Change the entire look

If you’re looking for a bigger outdoor project, like an entire driveway replacement, there are lots of options for your new look. There are many concrete finishes available to you, including stamped, broom finish, trowel finish, rock salt, coloured finishes, and many more. All of these finishes can also be applied to other outdoor features, including walkways, patios, and more.

How to ensure renovations are done right the first time

Renovations and major construction projects are investments that should be done right the first time and last for years. Part of ensuring that is the case means choosing high-quality in every step and process.

Strat Services 1 Ltd. in Vancouver is a construction, renovations, and repairs company. They guarantee their residential and commercial jobs are done right the first time and share some tips on how they do just that:

Quality materials

When it comes to quality materials, don’t think that automatically means a big price tag. There are ways to balance a budget with good materials that will last for just as many years. Choosing low-quality faucets, plumbing, cabinets, or even paint risks wearing out sooner. While those minor repairs may not seem like a problem now, those little repairs will start to creep up in costs over the years. Instead of saving money and boosting value with your new renovation, you end up spending more.

Working with skilled contractors like Strat Services 1 Ltd. means they can help find the right balance between long-lasting materials and your budget. They’ll help with suggestions for what materials are the best choice to splurge or where you can safely save.

Quality workmanship

Materials are only as good as their installation, which makes a set of skilled hands another must. While it’s tempting to DIY work during a renovation, consider your skills. Construction work, installing new cabinets, or plumbing should all be handled by a professional. They have the right skills, tools, and experience to ensure a quality job and one that will last for years.

Strata Services 1 Ltd. offers 50 years of proven work skill, which guarantees that quality work. They also work quickly but without rushing and sacrificing any quality or long-term investment benefits. Keep in mind that quality workmanship also relates to the planning and design stages. Have your contractor involved from the start when deciding what new kitchen layout to create or which paint colours to choose. You’ll benefit from their expertise right away, which will also help prevent any down the road repairs or changes.

First-class supervision

The final piece of the process is having a skilled and experienced supervisor on the job. General contractors typically take on that position and act as your go-to contact. Strata Services 1 Ltd. oversees all projects with an expert eye for details that catches any problems before they develop. They only use skilled and qualified trades, ensure timelines are always met, and that peace of mind is always a given. Having an eye for detail will ensure your renovations look great, value-adding, and long-lasting.

General Contractors in Vancouver

The 50 years of experience that Strat Services 1 Ltd. brings also includes management, construction, and quality insurance. Their professionals can help with everything from basic maintenance to skilled installation or project management. With their company on your side, you will have peace of mind and a long-lasting renovation for every residential or commercial project.
