Home Maintenance Projects Perfect for the Spring

Spring is quickly approaching and that means it is time to take care of our homes. From cleaning the gutters to cutting back the overgrown shrubs, there are plenty of things we can do that will improve the look and feel of our home while also helping us to save money in the process. Some projects are quick and easy, like power washing down driveways, while others require more effort but yield better results such as replacing your windows or improving a porch railing. Whatever your home improvement goals are, the following spring home maintenance projects are the best tasks to get you started.

Gutter Maintenance

All of us who live in areas that receive a lot of snow and rain know all too well just how important having good gutters is. During the winter, they help to prevent overflow that might lead to leaks in your basement or seeping into your walls. In the summer, they keep your basement dry and prevent water from seeping into the foundation of your home. Before you can replace or repair existing gutters, you must know what is wrong with them which requires having them cleaned out. If you don’t regularly clean out your gutters, you might be asking for trouble sooner than later. While cleaning out your gutters is a simple process, it does involve getting on a ladder and lugging heavy objects around the exterior of your home. If you are not too keen on heights or carrying heavy things, then we suggest getting some help from a family member or friend. Once the gutters are clear of debris and leaf matter, you should replace any that are rotting or have holes that need closing with new ones. Doing so will extend the life of your gutters which is why doing so now while they are easy to access is a great idea. If you are going to have your gutters replaced, then you may want to consider an eco-friendlier option such as copper. Copper gutters last longer and require less maintenance than aluminum ones. It is also worth noting that with aluminum gutters, the paint often peels off which can lead to premature wear and tear of your home.

Windows and Doors

One of the first things we see when we look at a house is how clean or dirty everything is on the outside of it. In other words, if the exterior of your home has dirty windows and doors that are worn out then they will negatively impact its resale value in the future. You do not need to spend a lot when it comes to replacing doors and windows, but you should at least try to buy ones that are energy efficient. If you live in an area that gets lots of heat or cold, then it would be worth your while to invest in energy-efficient windows and doors so they can help to keep the temperature inside your house more consistent. Windows come in many different styles, colors, shapes, and materials which is why it is best you choose a type that fits with the architectural style of your home.

Painting

Over time, paint will chip and fade which is why it is best that you regularly maintain it. One of the first things to do when maintaining paint is to use a roller or brush to remove dirt, dust, and other debris. Once this is done, you can begin painting again if necessary.

Renovation vs remodel

Whether it’s the plumbing, heating, a room or the whole home, renovations and remodels are different things. Of course, both have advantages, but a renovation isn’t the same as a remodel. Knowing the difference will make the planning easier and ensure you get maximum value.

OTG Renovations in Winnipeg are a professional renovations company. They share the difference between a renovation or remodel and can help you plan your next major home project.

Renovation

When talking about a renovation, the key difference is the original structure of your home is not changed. Instead, things are updated, like getting new lighting or a better furnace or kitchen cabinets. Renovations help upgrade and update the space without needing drastic structural overhauls. It also requires fewer people, possibly fewer or no permits, and doesn’t cost as much as a significant remodel. A minor renovation can add significant value to your home and fit your budget without as much disruption to your home and daily life.

Remodel

Anything that changes the structure, layout, or floor plan is a remodel. That could mean tearing down a wall to create an open layout dining and kitchen space. If you want to change the bathroom to be more modern with dual vanities and a spacious shower area, a remodel can do just that. A significant home remodel could also be a home addition or gutting a space down to the studs for a complete rebuild. While they are more expensive and need permits and extra labour, it has excellent ROI. If you’re planning to sell or preparing to age-in-place, a remodel can turn your home into exactly what you need.

Work with the pros

If you’re upgrading your home, it’s essential that you work with an experienced and professional general contractor. They can help you get the most out of your renovation dollars, whether you’re doing a simple upgrade or a major overhaul. OTG Renovations offers a range of home upgrade services and helpful guidance. For example, they can provide complete kitchen remodels, bathroom and basement renovations. In addition, they’ll manage the project from start to finish and offer tips for the best return on investment.

They also offer HVAC services like air conditioning and furnace repairs and installation, hot water installation and more. That means they can provide services for aesthetic and functional changes while helping you improve your home’s mechanical systems, safety, and efficiency.

As a fully licensed and bonded company with professional training and certification, you can trust OTG Renovations. Working with a trusted company with the right experience and know-how is key to any successful project. They also offer free quotes, so you can get an idea of what your renovation or remodel will cost before getting started.

Choosing spray foam insulation for your home or building project

Spray foam insulation is one of the best insulation options on the market. It serves multiple purposes, including high thermal performance, strengthening walls, and acting as an airtight seal and vapour barrier.

Advanced Insulation offers spray foam insulation in Winnipeg. They share why you should choose spray form for your building project:

Advanced thermal performance

If you want to cut down on your energy bills, spray foam insulation can help. It has a high R-value per inch, providing more thermal performance with less material than any other type of insulation product on the market. Spray foam also creates an air barrier and vapour barrier simultaneously. Doing so eliminates air leakage, energy loss, and moisture build-up. Preventing moisture build-up can also help prevent mould and mildew growth. Both are hazardous to your health.

Insulation contractors in Winnipeg can install spray foam insulation to improve your home’s energy efficiency dramatically. As a result, you’ll see less strain on your heating and cooling system, lower energy bills, and improved home comfort.

You can install spray foam nearly anywhere

A major benefit of spray foam insulation is that it can go into awkward spaces, nooks and crannies, and anywhere traditional insulation products cannot. For example, spray foam works great in crawl spaces, attics, ceilings, rooftops, and other hard-to-reach places. Insulation contractors in Winnipeg can also install it around attic hatches, behind knee walls, wiring and plumbing holes, recessed lighting, and other areas that are culprits for air leaks and energy loss. It goes on in a liquid form, fills every gap, and then hardens to provide an airtight thermal barrier.

You can get a rebate!

When you install spray foam insulation in Winnipeg, you may be eligible for an Efficiency Manitoba rebate. This rebate is available to Manitobans who make green upgrades that help reduce energy consumption. For example, adding insulation to foundation walls, wall cavities, and ceilings can help you qualify for rebates of up to 100% of insulation materials.

Advanced Insulation can inspect your home and provide a detailed estimate for the insulation upgrade. Then, they can determine the amount of work eligible for the rebate, calculate the rebate amount, and help you complete the application process. Check out the Efficiency Manitoba Home Insulation Rebate.

Spray foam insulation is an excellent choice for new home builds and construction projects, retrofits, and renovations. If you want to boost energy efficiency, thermal performance, and home comfort, reach out to Advanced Insulation to learn more about spray foam insulation.

5 Stairs and Railing Trends

Your staircase and railings play a significant role in your home’s interior appearance and design. Sure, stairs need to play a functional role, but why not give them a little style?

Artistic Stairs in Calgary and Edmonton are your premier source for stairs, spindles, railings, banisters, and more! They share how a staircase can create a focal point with these creative stairs and railings trends.

1. Wood steps and handrail with white balusters

Keeping things simple can go a long way. Keep the rich, natural tone of your wood steps and handrail, and pair it with white risers and balusters. You can paint your current balusters white or replace them with new ones. The white features will make that beautifully polished wood pop.

2. Horizontal railings

Typically a staircase will have balusters that run up and down, but what about ones that run horizontally. This modern railing style offers excellent visual appeal with clean lines and minimalist style. Your horizontal railings can be a solid bar of metal or wood or a metal cable. Horizontal railings are safe, practical, and offer a unique change compared to traditional vertical railing systems.

3. Unique metal spindles with a wood handrail

Combining metal and wood creates a timeless look that you’ll love for years to come. Choose from a selection of unique, intricate spindles to create a pattern heading up the stairs. For example, you can have straight metal spindles, with every third spindle having a twist or unique design. Black spindles will give an elegant look when paired with a dark wood rail.

4. Glass railings for a modern look

Glass railings are increasing in popularity. Totally customizable, glass creates a sleek look and is easy to maintain. It is simple and elegant and complements a range of design styles, including modern, contemporary, and traditional. Its transparency can make a narrow staircase feel wider and the room more spacious. You can combine glass with metal or wood rails and choose from different tints or transparencies. Artistic Stairs can customize your glass staircase railings to match your home’s interior design style.

5. Spiral staircases give a visual twist

Thanks to the popularity of open floor plans, spiral staircases are becoming more popular in homes. Stair builders can customize a spiral staircase to match any interior design style. For example, you can have wooden steps with a metal frame and railing system. Or, your spiral staircase can have a wood handrail and glass panels to create a wide-open look. Depending on your home’s layout, a spiral staircase can also be a solution if you lack space for a large built-in staircase.

The 7 Best Window Replacement Companies in Ottawa

An Ottawa window replacement offers several benefits. Improved energy efficiency, home comfort, function, curb appeal, and increased property value. For most homeowners, the key benefit is improved thermal performance and lower energy bills.

The windows in your home are the primary culprit for energy loss. ENERY STAR states that windows, doors, and skylights can cause up to 25% of your home’s total energy loss. With inefficient windows, you’ll lose warmth in the winter and cool air in the summer. With Ottawa’s cold winters and warm summers, that means higher energy bills for you.

How can a window replacement improve efficiency?

Older windows cannot compare to the latest technology manufactured today. Single pane windows, aluminum sliders, and older wooden framed windows are insufficient. Drafts, leaks, condensation build-up and other issues can spike energy bills and potentially damage your home.

New, highly-efficient windows are made with double or triple panes. Between each layer of glass, there is an insulator and argon gas. The gas acts as an insulator, boosting the window’s thermal performance. With three panes, you’ll get two spaces for that insulating gas. That is why triple-paned windows have a higher R-value.

In addition to the glass and gas insulation, window frames are manufactured to block and slow energy transfer. Window makers cover the glass with a low-E coating, which keeps warm air inside during the winter and reflects the sun’s heat from the outside in summer. New energy-efficient windows can vastly improve efficiency and reduce energy costs with all these components combined.

Installation is important

Professional window installation is another vital factor. Experienced companies that offer window replacement in Ottawa will ensure to install the window correctly. An incorrectly installed window can cause drafts, air and water leaks, and condensation. The damage moisture and water can cause often goes unnoticed until it becomes expensive to repair.

That’s why choosing the right company for Ottawa window replacement is essential. They should have experience, product and installation knowledge, and a proven reputation in the renovation industry.

Working with Gary and Shelley was a delight and Rob and his crew were very efficient in the installation. Gary got back to me with a quote very promptly and it was less than other estimates I received from other companies that in some cases took weeks to get. The weather on installation day was lousy but Rob was careful not to track snow into the house and the crew managed to struggle through the drifts.
I am pleased enough by my initial purchase that I have recently ordered windows for the second storey of the house. I am so pleased.

Great overall experience using Capitall Windows. Very satisfied with my experience. We had Evgueni come to quote 10 windows and 2 doors – expected a big hit to the wallet but we were quite satisfied with their proposal. In spite of the supply chain challenges created by the on-going pandemic, the windows were installed fairly quickly thereafter. The installers were punctual and respectful. The KV brand windows and doors that they use appear to be excellent quality. One window arrived in the incorrect size but Renaud immediately took steps to fix it. These things happen – what’s important is that they didn’t hesitate to make it right. We have recommended them to a few friends who have also had good experiences. We will use them again in the future.

Tips for choosing a window replacement company

If you’re looking for an Ottawa window replacement, doing research on each company you consider is a vital first step. They should offer quality products that are rated by ENERGY STAR for your climate zone. A reputable window replacement company will have good references and a solid reputation among previous customers and industry peers.

Check the credentials

Before hiring any home improvement company to work on your home, there are certain credentials you should check. Valid business licensing, current liability insurance, and WCB coverage are things a reputable company can produce. Without these credentials, you and your property can be put at risk if there are damages or an accident on the worksite. You can also check for third-party affiliations like ratings with the Better Business Bureau and certification from RenovationFind.

Ask for references

You can read customer reviews online, but those are not always reliable sources. Unfortunately, there are lots of fake or fabricated online reviews in the home improvement industry. Check those reviews, but also ask for contact information from the company’s prior customers. Getting contact information from their last three customers will allow you to get a better picture of what they do, and what you can expect when working with them.

Ask about warranties

Reputable Ottawa window replacement companies will, at minimum, offer a warranty from the manufacturer. Some companies will also offer warranties on labour and service. Before you purchase your new windows, ask about warranties and make sure you’re covered. You don’t want to find yourself in trouble if something happens to your replacement windows in the future.

Look for the ENERGY STAR logo

ENERGY STAR certification ensures the windows, doors, and skylight products meet a certain standard. It’s a trusted symbol that sets apart the best energy performers in Canada. To achieve certification, the products must meet strict technical specifications for energy performance. They are tested and then certified.

How to repoint a patio

Years of wear and tear have taken a toll on your back garden, and now, after a long and rainy winter, the state of your patio is more noticeable than ever. The grout between patio slabs has become loose, cracked and now weeds are growing out of the cracks.

Now, it’s time for a change. With the sun making its appearance once again, it is the perfect time to finally give your patio some attention. What better way to refresh your patio than to repoint the patio slabs?

What is repointing a patio?

Repointing your patio is an easy and cheap way to make your patio look brand-new once again but what does repointing mean? Repointing a patio means removing old grout and re-apply grout between patio slabs.

patio slabs need repointing

Who can repoint a patio?

Many people can repoint a patio – all you need is the right materials, enough free time (we would recommend a full weekend) and maybe a helping hand. Whether you don’t have enough spare time to complete this task or would prefer to get it done by a professional, our skilled team of tradesmen can undertake a variety of tasks to uplift your outdoors, from repointing patios to pressure washing paving stones and treating outdoor wooden furniture.

How often repoint patio?

There is no set rule on how often to repoint a patio or either when to repoint a patio. Different patio sealers will have different lifespans. There are many factors that will affect the lifespan of your patio grout, from weather conditions to how often you clean the patio and more.

The right time to repoint a patio will be when you have noticed that the mortar that held the slabs together has started to crack, crumbled away or is riddled with weeds.

What to use to repoint patio slabs?

There are a variety of ways to repoint patio slabs. Some of the most popular ways include:

  • Repointing patio with cement
  • Repointing patio with dry mix
  • Repointing patio with resin

How to repoint patio slabs with cement.

Materials:

  • Cement
  • Pointing bar
  • Mixing bucket
  • Stirrer
  • Trowel
  • Soft brush
  • Gun injection equipment
  • Pointing trowel
  • Grout rake

How to:

Step 1 – Pressure wash patio.

Clean the patio slabs to remove any staining, moss and dirt.

Step 2. Remove old pointing.

Use a grout rake to remove old pointing. Do this in between all patio slabs. Sweep away any residue and dirt. You can pressure wash slightly again to remove the remaining dirt and make the joints damp.

Step 3 – Create mortar mix.

Follow the product’s instructions on how to create the right mortar mix. With the help of a trowel, load mortar mix into gun injection equipment. You might choose to do it without a gun, use a pointing trowel instead.

trowel

Step 4.  Push mortar inside the joints.

Push the mortar mix inside the slab joints. Any mortar that goes on the patio slabs can be wiped off with a clean damp sponge. Any extra bits of mortar can be brushed off.

Step 5 – Keep it damp.

Don’t let the mortar dry out too quickly. After you’ve pointed the patio, let it sit for a couple of hours (depending on the temperature). If you see the mortar starting to get quite light, make it damp with a fine mist of water using a hosepipe. The next day, make it damp again with a fine mist a couple of times a day.

How to repoint patio slabs with dry mix.

Materials:

  • Cement
  • Sand
  • Grout rake
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Trowel
  • Broom

How to:

Step 1. Remove old grout.

Use a grout rake to remove old pointing. Do this in between all patio slabs. Sweep away any residue and dirt or use a vacuum cleaner to hoover any dirt or leftover residue more thoroughly.

Step 2 – Create dry mix.

Speak to a local professional for advice on the best dry mix ratio for your location. Mix it together until you have no crumbly bits of sand. You want to aim for a consistency that holds together when being squeezed. Use safety gloves when testing the consistency of your dry mix.

Step 3 – Push mix in.

Use a trowel to insert the dry mix into the joints of the slabs. Compact it down. Do this again until the mix is higher up and firmly compacted in. Use a brush to sweep any leftover dry mix over. Make sure to not leave any mix on top of the slabs as it might stain. Leave it to cure.

Step 2 – Soak the patio.

With a hosepipe, wet the whole patio and in between the joints.

Step 3 – Fill in joints and brush.

Open the resin compound bag. Turn it upside down and fill the joints with the compound. Use a broom to brush the mix inside the joints. Compact the mix using a pointing trowel. Brush it in and compact again. Hose it off in a mist as you go and brush off any extra resin.

When to Replace Windows in Your Home

Replacing windows in your home can be an expensive and time-consuming process, but at some point, the benefits may outweigh the costs. There are many things to consider before you replace windows including budget, warranties, and aesthetics. In this blog, we’ll cover some common situations where replacing windows makes sense.

Age & Functionality

In general, it doesn’t make sense to replace windows unless they’re old or don’t do their job properly. If you’re constantly needing to prop open a window because it won’t stay open or it has developed gaps between the frame and wall, then it’s time to consider replacing that option. If a window is old or inefficient you should also consider replacing it.

Efficiency

In addition to age and functionality, you’ll also want to consider the efficiency of the windows in your home. Old, drafty windows are uncomfortable and tend to let more cold air into the home than they should. Newer more efficient windows can help reduce energy impacts while increasing your ability to use natural light in your home. In addition, if you have a history of high electricity bills or live in an area with extremely cold winters then you may want to consider upgrading your windows for improved efficiency and comfort.

Weather Damage

If you’re noticing that your windows are deteriorating or that they don’t provide adequate protection from the elements, it’s time to make the decision to replace them. Depending on your living situation and where you live, there may also be a benefit to replace windows as part of a larger home improvement project. For example, if you need to replace an entire side of your home due to water damage then a window replacement can help with some of the new construction costs and give you added functionality once that portion is finished.

All about ceiling renovations

During the planning and decision-making of a renovation, it’s easy to forget about the 5th wall in your home. The ceiling often gets ignored or left with a simple white paint job, and that’s it. While functional, there are many other options and ways to approach a ceiling renovation.

Stampede Drywall Ltd. in Calgary is a professional drywall contractor company. They share what you need to know about doing a ceiling renovation:

Helps with soundproofing

When you want to reduce noise or improve acoustics in your home, the ceiling is a great place to start. Rooms like a playroom, hobby room, or even a basement will benefit from a quieter space. Ceiling renovations can help do just that with either a false ceiling or a lath and plaster method.

False ceilings are fitted ceilings that hang just below the actual one. They help create the illusion of a lower ceiling and are also well insulated and excellent for soundproofing. Lath and plaster is another method used on traditional ceilings. The material alone is great for dampening noises, and the flexible material can be used to create customized designs.

Creative design

Why stick with a plain white ceiling with a generic appearance when you can spruce it up and add visual appeal? If your ceiling is an old popcorn ceiling, it’s a great time to make a change. Popcorn ceilings tend to collect more dust and dirt, and the design of the pattern makes the room feel smaller. It’s also hard to clean and maintain compared to other ceilings. Knock-down ceilings, however, are much more appealing. The pattern creates a stuccoed appearance and is one of the most common textures. It’s a great way to add depth and visual interest to a room, and it helps hide any blemishes.

A cove cornice steppe is a way to go for a touch of luxury or old classic appeal. This decorative crown moulding creates a clean-cut design that protects the ceiling and adds interest. Some can even be paired with ceiling lights to really add that dramatic flair to your home. Find inspiration with these ceiling design ideas.

Consider the cost

Remember that ceiling renovations can be expensive and aren’t meant to be a DIY project. The old ceiling pattern will need to be removed, surface prepared, and then the new ceiling installed. If you create a custom look, extra work and time will be involved. Then, in most cases, the new ceiling will require painting or finishing to complete the look. That said, a well-handled ceiling renovation will add lasting value and appeal to your home or room. Working with a skilled contractor will also ensure the job is handled professionally and with the best quality materials and results. Your new ceiling can help open up the space while drastically improving the look and feel of the room.

Roof maintenance to do in the spring

Winter can wreak havoc on your home, including your roof. Connect with a professional roofer this spring if you were on the fence about a roof replacement last fall or suspect your roof might need repair or maintenance after a long winter.

First Class Roofing and Renovations in Calgary offers residential and commercial roofing and residential services. They share suggestions for taking care of your roof this upcoming spring.

Check the gutters

Everything on your roof drains into the gutters when all the snow melts in the warmer weather. In addition, debris like leaves and twigs could’ve blown into the gutters last fall. Ensuring your gutters are clean and clear of debris is critical. If the roof’s drainage system doesn’t work correctly, water will fall off the roof’s edge and pool around your foundation. This flooding can cause foundation damage and eventually penetrate into the basement. Clean the gutters, get them repair or replaced if damaged, and help protect your home from potential water damage.

Inspect your shingles

Spring is the time to take a close look at the condition of your shingles. If you’re not comfortable getting up on a ladder, contact First Class Roofing for a professional roof inspection. They will provide a detailed inspection of your shingles, flashing, vents, and drainage system to ensure everything is in good working order. Catching minor issues early will help prevent significant damage or the need for a roof replacement down the road. In addition, they’ll make suggestions for repairs, or, if your roof is aged and no longer protecting your home, suggest a roof replacement.

Protect your home with a new roof

Curling, missing, or peeling shingles is a tell-tale sign that you need a new roof. If your roof is older, or you suspect a water leak, do not delay. Connect with First Class Roofing as soon as possible to inspect the problem. Spring and summer storms are a sure thing in Calgary, and you want to make sure your home is protected. Investing in a roof replacement will boost curb appeal, help you maintain property value, and prevent costly damage to your home. First Class Roofing offers high-quality roofing products, expert installation, and peace of mind knowing your new roof was installed to last.

Choosing between custom cabinets or cabinet refacing

If you’re renovating the kitchen, you have several options for improving your cabinets. For example, if your cabinets are still in good shape but you want a new look, cabinet refacing is a cost-effective option. On the other hand, you might choose custom cabinets if you want a significant change with customized features, additional storage, and enhanced function. Learn about the difference between replacing and refacing cabinets.

TSN Cabinets in Edmonton offers cabinetry services for your home renovation. They can help you to choose between custom cabinets or refacing.

Choosing custom cabinets

One of the biggest reasons to install custom cabinets is that it allows you to customize your space. For example, custom cabinets are a great idea if you want to revamp the kitchen’s layout or require additional storage that your current cabinets provide. You might want things like glide-out shelving, built-in spice racks, wine racks, and other custom features. With custom cabinets, your options are endless.

Custom cabinets are also a good idea if you want to completely change the style and design of your home. They allow you to choose everything from the wood and materials used to the door styles and other functional features.

Custom cabinets are strong, durable, and high-quality. While a more considerable investment than cabinet refacing, they’ll last for decades and can always be refinished if you decide to change their look. Plus, custom cabinets will improve your home’s value and make your home a market contender if you decide to sell in the future.

Opting to reface your existing cabinets

Cabinet refacing is an excellent option to investigate for your home if your cabinets are still in good condition and you like your kitchen’s layout. This alternative offers a cost-effective modernization of your kitchen and can save up to 50% compared to a complete cabinet replacement.

Cabinet refacing is a simple process: it replaces the cabinet doors and drawer fronts while keeping the cabinet box. Contractors will apply a veneer to the exposed panels to match the look of the new doors. You can choose from an endless selection of door styles, materials, and colours. Essentially, cabinet refacing will give you a fresh look without the expensive price tag.

Another great reason to look at cabinet refacing is that it’s environmentally friendly. You’re reducing waste by keeping your current cabinet boxes that would otherwise end up in a landfill. No significant demolition is required, and that means less mess too. Cabinet refacing is also quick and efficient, reducing the renovation time and the disruption to your home life.
