What’s the process of getting a new roof?

Curling shingles are a sign you need a new roof.

Knowing when to get a new roof and the process and cost can feel overwhelming. If your roof is showing signs it needs a repair or replacement, you should not delay. Keep your home protected, and gain peace of mind by working with an honest and experienced roofing contractor that will educate you along the way.

Cadieux Roofing in Ottawa is a knowledgeable roofing company that will make the experience as easy and positive as possible. They explain the process of getting a new roof:

How to tell it’s time for a new roof

There are tell-tale signs that your roof needs replacing. For example, shingles curling up instead of lying flat are a good sign it’s time to reach out to a roofing company. Likewise, balding, peeling or missing shingles mean it’s time to book a roof inspection. Often when asphalt shingles deteriorate, they can shed their granules. If you notice granules, which look like coarse black sand, around your property or in your gutters, it’s worth getting an inspection. You can learn more about roof inspections.

Book a roof inspection

If you’ve noticed these warning signs, it’s time to call for an inspection. Doing so sooner than later will help protect your roof and home from moisture and water damage. In addition, an inspection will tell you the extent that a new roof is needed and how urgent the job is. Sometimes it can wait a little longer, or a repair can help extend its life. In other instances, a replacement is in order.

Cadieux Roofing will advise you of the state of your roof, explain any issues that are found so you fully understand the problem, then let you know what level of repair is needed or if a full replacement is recommended. If the roof can be fixed with a repair, they won’t try to sell you a replacement you don’t need.  If you require a formal inspection for insurance companies or real estate agents, Cadieux Roofing will provide you with a detailed report including photos and recommendations, for a small fee.

Schedule your roof replacement or repairs

If your roof has been compromised, get it repaired or replaced as soon as possible. Weather conditions such as melting snow, wind and rain can cause water damage to other parts of your home, which is costly to repair. Cadieux Roofing will work around your schedule and be as accommodating as possible while completing your roof replacement. They’ll ensure the roof is installed correctly and keep a safe and clean worksite. They offer the highest quality roofing products, and their highly trained and experienced in-house team of installers will make sure your home is protected.  They’ll respect your property as they would their own, and will ensure you have a positive experience and a solid roof!

Roofers in Ottawa

Cadieux Roofing offers a full range of roofing services, including inspections, repairs, and roof replacements. They do not hire sub-trades, which means every person working on your project is committed to providing the best service and craftsmanship every time.  The owner provides an on-site visit to prepare a quote and answer all questions you might have.  He will also assist in helping you to understand your quotes, to make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

Changing Up the Ceiling with Faux Beams

How to Buy & Install Faux Beams

Faux beams are visually appealing and will add an aesthetically pleasing element with little effort.

What are Faux Beams?

Faux beams are a great way to give your home a beautiful and updated look. They are also known as architectural beams or wood-looking beams, and they replicate the look of real wood without the high cost. Some beams can be painted almost any color to match your home’s interior decor, while others can be stained. When you purchase beams, they will come in large panels that need to be cut down smaller to fit in between ceiling joists. Make sure you ask your dealer if they come in a standard size so that you know how much cutting is needed on your end.

How to Install Faux Beams

  1. Measure the space between each ceiling joist. Purchase wood planks that will match your wall color, as well as any other colors or tones you want added to your room (i.e., browns, greys, etc.). Decide whether you want wide planks or thin ones based on aesthetic preference and cost. Purchase the number of faux beams you need. Wood planks must be used to cover the channels that carry the beams to the ceiling, and this is what determines how many are needed. Purchase and cut down your beams to size. Measure your beams and cut them using a power saw or jigsaw – they should not be more than 3 inches wide with a proper thickness of 1/8 inch or less. Tape off edges so that they do not get damaged when cutting; this will help prevent chipping during installation (use painters’ tape, not duct tape).
  1. Install your beams between ceiling joists. You will notice how the beams seem to rise out of the wood planks, so you will need to use larger pieces of wood to cover these for the beam to sit flush. It is best to buy thicker planks for this purpose.
  2. Cut and install your wood planks on top of your beams. If you have a wider beam, then it will be necessary to cut multiple planks at varying sizes and nail them all together – the same goes for thinner beams. The wood covering should go from wall to wall, but if there is a small gap between your wall and ceiling then fill in this area by nailing more planks on top of each other.
  1. Nail planks to the wall. Use nails that have a rounded tip on them so that you do not create sharp metal corners. Space the nails evenly between planks to avoid making a large hole and damaging your walls – this step is best done by a professional if possible.
  1. Stain or paint your faux beams and wood planks in whichever color you desire. Be sure to test out your stain or paint first before applying it to ensure it will not have negative reactions with certain paints; read the manufacturer’s instructions on how to use their product for this task. You will want to allow the stain or paint to dry for several days or weeks, depending on the package instructions.
  1. Attach wall-to-ceiling panels on top of your walls afterwards. This will be dependent upon how high you hung your beams to ensure it is flush with the ceiling; this step is also best done by a professional if possible. Once you have screwed in your paneling, add molding around your faux beams for added detail that creates a seamless look for your new faux beam ceilings.

The price of buying and installing faux beams is affordable and well worth the cost when compared to other expensive home improvements that do not even include wood planks, such as adding crown molding. Beware of cheap imitations being sold in stores – they look great, but they cost you a lot more in the long run.

Questions to consider when hiring a renovation contractor

Home renovations are complex projects and can be a significant investment. An essential first step is hiring an experienced and reputable kitchen renovation contractor for the job. Always get two or three quotes from different companies, do your due diligence, and research each of them before choosing who does the project.

Electric Woods in Edmonton is a trustworthy contractor that specializes in kitchen renovations. They share things you’ll want to explore and questions you’ll want to ask when comparing and interviewing a contractor.

Do you have a plan and design for your renovation?

A contractor can’t provide you with an accurate budget until the design and materials have been selected. The price for a bathroom remodel can vary from $10,000 for a minor update to $20,000+ for a fully custom bathroom. If the renovation is relatively simple and you know what you want, most experienced contractors can work with you and provide a quote. If it is more involved, a designer or architect would be the first step in the renovation process.

There are design and build contractors who take care of the whole process for you, or you can hire a designer or architect depending on the project needs to come up with the design before you start looking for a contractor. Having a detailed design beforehand ensures all contractors provide a bid for the same scope of work and are not missing anything or skipping any corners to try and give you a lower price than the competition.

How long will the project take to complete?

Find out how long they expect your project to take so you can plan for and know if it is moving along as planned. A small project could take two to three days to complete, whereas a more extensive renovation such as a kitchen could take four to size weeks. It all depends on the complexity and scope of work. Delays happen, especially with having to deal with COVID and all the material and shipping delays occurring recently.

What permits are required?

Typically any job other than minor cosmetic changes requires permitting. Any electrical, plumbing, HVAC or structural modifications changes will require a certified tradesperson to obtain permits and perform the work.

What about safety and site protection?

Ask how your contractor will be ensuring the safety of their staff, sub-contractors, your family and property. Do the staff and subcontractors have background checks? Do they follow OHS regulations? What safety protocols do they have in place? How will the construction area be separated from the rest of your house? Daily cleaning and dust mitigation such as containment walls and air scrubbers?

What are the payment terms?

You and the contractor should agree on payment terms before signing any contracts. No money should ever be paid in advance unless they have a prepaid contractor license as required in Alberta. Then and only then should you pay a small signing deposit to lock you into the contractor’s schedule or a material deposit. Progress payments are the fairest and most common form of payment, typically every two weeks but will vary depending on your contractor and the length of the job.

Can they provide references?

Ask your contractor for photos of previous work and references from two to three clients. Do some research before selecting a contractor. If they are good at what they do, they should have lots of clients willing to give a reference if asked.

Are they licensed and insured?

Find out whether the contractor has all the required licenses from your province and local municipalities. Ensure they are adequately insured, carry WCB and have a prepaid contractor license if they need a deposit before performing any work. All their subcontractors should also have the same.

Get it in writing!

After selecting a contractor, carefully look at the contract they have prepared. Does it look professional? Is it easy to understand, or is it full of legal terms? If anything is confusing or brings up immediate red flags, have a contract lawyer look over it before signing. Here are a few things that every contract should have.

– a quote and payment schedule
– specifics about the scope of work
– the site plan
– a change-order clause
– a detailed schedule of the project
– a workmanship and material warranty
– a clause about dispute resolution
– liability waiver
– contract termination requirements

A reputable contractor will always give you a contract in writing and be open and honest if you have questions or concerns.

Hiring a painting contractor can transform your home

If you’re painting the interior of your home or the exterior, avoid disappointment by hiring a professional. There are many things to consider before even picking a paint colour, like lighting and humidity levels. Hiring a professional can save you time, stress, and sometimes money and give you a finished product that you’re happy with.

Oriah Contracting in Surrey offers painting and home renovation services. They share when you should hire a professional for your home projects:

Interior painting

Choosing a colour for the inside of your home can be a challenge. Depending on your home’s style and the vibe you want, there is a range of options. You need to consider lighting and other things in the room, including flooring and furniture. Incandescent lighting brings out shades of yellows while fluorescent gives a blue hue. Your paint colour might also look slightly different depending on the time of day. Professional painters are aware of these details and can help educate you while choosing colours. Choosing the right colour is essential to your satisfaction after completing the project.

Home renovation

When upgrading your home, likely your space will need a new coat of paint as well. Painting the walls and trim provides that finishing touch that will bring all your new renovation features together. Painting cabinets is also a popular kitchen renovation. If your cabinets are still in good shape but need modernizing, a professional like Oriah Contracting can refinish them to transform their look. If you’ve completed a significant structural change that included new drywall work, you’ll need a painter to finish the job too.

Exterior painting

Painting the outside of your house can be tricky and is best left to a pro. Humidity levels, sun exposure, and even temperature changes are all things that need to be avoided. Painting in these conditions can cause the paint to deteriorate much more quickly than under optimal conditions. Also, avoid seeing things like blistering, cracking, or efflorescence – a problem that sees salt bubbling underneath the paint. Read more about exterior painting issues.

A professional like Oriah Contracting will ensure all prep work is complete for optimized results. They pay attention to detail and will ensure your exterior paint job lasts for years to come.

Benefits of combined home automation and security

Home automation can improve your home’s lifestyle, convenience, energy efficiency, and value. Often, home automation systems include home security components. When combined, these smart home features add protection and offer many advantages.

3 Small Bathroom Ideas for Your Home

Bathrooms and kitchens top the list of rooms that people would change if they could afford to remodel. When house hunting, buyers focus on the size of two rooms. Often, they settle for something different with hopes of one day remodeling the home they choose.

If the small bathroom remodeling ideas are taking longer than you thought, don’t fret. You can still create a beautiful space.

In this article, we’ll offer three small bathroom ideas that will make a big difference. Keep reading to learn more.

Small Bathroom Ideas on a Budget

A small bathroom is easily transformed with the right decorating techniques. Many options can get completed in a weekend and not break the bank. If you’re not in weekend DIY projects, Bathroom Brothers in Langley can get the job done for you.

1. Choose Color Palettes to Create an Illusion

Choosing the right colors tops the list for budget small bathroom ideas. There are two ways to go if you want to make a bathroom appear bigger. One is choosing very light colors, and the other is going with extremely dark colors.

Both choices add the illusion of depth and height.

Light neutral colors work well with natural light. Whites and soft pastels do well in bathrooms with windows that bring in a lot of sunlight.

Darker colors give a dramatic effect to very small bathroom ideas with no windows or limited lighting.

2. Tile From Floor to Ceiling

Tile options have increased over the years. Popular choices range from ceramic subway tiles to faux wood flooring. There are many types of flooring that you can use in small bathroom design ideas for using tile on walls and ceilings.

You can mix and match tiles to create unique designs. Expand your color palette to add contour to the room. Or, you can use the same color and style from floor to ceiling.

For small bathrooms, it is recommended that you use small tiles. However, the choice is yours, depending on the effect you’re aiming to achieve.

3. Install a Glass Shower Door

In small bathrooms with a shower and no tub, installing glass shower doors is a small bathroom decor idea you’re sure to love. Choose frameless shower doors for a seamless illusion. Also growing in popularity are multi-lite doors in a black satin finish.

If your bathroom is too small to accommodate a show door that swings out, you can still incorporate glass into the design. Choose a single fixed shower door. With this design, you get the elegance of a glass door that leaves an open entry into the shower.

Bring Your Bathroom Designs to Life With Langley Bathroom Renovations

Compare Types of Flooring – Guide to Common Flooring Options

Flooring makes up a major part of your home renovation. When installing new flooring in your home, it can be a tricky decision. There are many factors that go into deciding, including pricing, colors, patterns, durability, installation costs, maintenance, and more. If this process of choosing has become overwhelming, look no further!

Here is a guide to common flooring types found in homes, including the benefits, limitations and price estimates of each.

Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood floors are a great investment for any home. They have a strong resale value and a classic look that adds warmth to any room. It’s easily customizable to your taste, match to your furniture, and come in numerous neutral colours to help tie a whole room together.

Hardwood act as a good insulator to keep the floors feeling warm year-round. It’s long-lasting, easy to maintain, and doesn’t trap dust and other allergens. Refinishing the floors is an easy process, as hardwood can be easily sanded and refinished numerous times. It comes in many different materials and styles, including maple, white ash, hickory, red oak, Brazilian cherry, and many others. Hardwood flooring typically requires an underlay for extra stability. Being a more popular flooring option, it is also easy to come by.

While hardwood floors can be a desired floor textile, it can be an expensive installation. Once hardwood is installed, if done incorrectly, may bend or pop out of place. Some finishes may scratch easily or develop creaks if not well taken care of. It is not recommended that hardwood be installed in rooms that are prone to water damage, including bathrooms or laundry rooms. Although it can be easy to damage, it’s a great flooring option for any home.

The average cost of hardwood, including product and installation, is $8.00 to $10.00 per square foot.

Tile

Ceramic Tile Flooring

Ceramic tile is one of the most common tile choices for flooring. It is a highly durable flooring option that works great in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, entryways, mudrooms, and any other room you desire. It comes in numerous designs and colors. This tile is incredibly family-friendly and is perfect for homes with children and pets. It won’t scratch easily and shows no wear and tear in your busy day-to-day life. It’s easy to clean, and is highly resistant to germs and bacteria, making ceramic tile a safe choice for any family home. Ceramic tile is an available option, and easy to find in-store.

Something to keep in mind with ceramic tile is that over time, it may suffer damage from sunlight exposure, causing the coloring of the floor tiles to fade over the years. Because it’s so smooth, it can be slippery when wet. It isn’t much of a conductive flooring material, making temperature regulation less probable in colder climates. As well, it’s not the most comfortable flooring type to be standing on for longer periods of time.

The average cost of ceramic tile, including product and installation, is $4.50 to $7.50 per square foot.

Stone Tile Flooring

Stone tile is tile that is made of natural rock, making it an extremely durable option for any home. Examples of stone used in floor tiles include limestone, granite, travertine, onyx, marble, limestone and sandstone. Because marble can be a popular choice, we will talk about marble tile on its own later on in the article.

Coming in a wide variety of colors and patterns to choose from, choosing a stone tile for your home will give you a unique look, as no two stone tile floors will look the same. It can enhance the look and value of your home and is suitable for all locations in your home. It’s low maintenance, making it last longer. Not only that but manufacturing the tile is environmentally friendly, helping you lower your ecological footprint. For this kind of tile and others, a waterproof underlayment may be a good thing to think about if the tile will be placed in a room where there is a risk of water damage.

Stone tile comes at a price, quite literally: It’s a more expensive option as well. Some types of stone you may choose can be porous and can suffer from water damage, so keeping this tile dry is an important thing to keep in mind. As well, using a stone tile may make it more difficult to get a uniform look in your home due to imperfections there may be in the rocks. It can be heavy, and create stress on the subflooring, making the subflooring less level. Installation can be more time-consuming and more difficult, depending on the type of stone you’re dealing with.

The average cost for stone tile, including product and installation, is $12.00 to $17.00 per square foot. The price will vary depending on the stone you choose.

Marble Tile Flooring

Marble tile flooring is usually found in the form of countertops, tiles, or backsplash; however, it can be used as a flooring option, too. It comes in a wide variety of colors and styles and has a unique appearance. It’s a natural material that brings the beauty of the environment into your home. It’s easily polished, and is a great conductor of heat, making the space in use cozy and refined.

Before choosing marble, it’s important to note that marble floors can scratch and scrape easily, which can be more noticeable on a polished surface like that. It’s also susceptible to water damage and can be slippery. Marble is a more expensive material to come by, and ceramic tile may want to be used as a cheaper alternative if cost an important factor. As well, marble can be difficult to install. If you have a busy household with children and pets, marble is not a realistic choice.

The average cost of marble flooring, including product and installation, is $10.00 to $20.00 per square foot.

Carpet Flooring

Most homes probably have carpet somewhere in the home, and for good reason. The temperature of carpet textures is uniform throughout the year and is soft on your feet. Many agree that carpet flooring is the coziest option. This is why it’s common in bedrooms and family rooms.

Carpet comes in a variety of styles and colors and is sold at a variety of pricing levels, depending on the luxury or quality of carpet you’re choosing. It’s easy to clean with shampooing and vacuuming and can reduce noise, making it a good choice for bedrooms, playrooms, or other living spaces. An underlayment is of the utmost importance when installing carpet because it will act as a cushion for the floor, and allow it to stretch properly. As well, it can help to further reduce noise, and act as a second insulating layer.

While it is a comfortable choice, spills can easily stain the carpet, and be quite difficult to remove. It’s a less modern look and doesn’t last as long as other flooring options because it is prone to get worn over the years. If someone in your home has allergies, a carpet may want to be avoided. It accumulates dust, pet hair, and other allergens that may make allergy symptoms worse. In cases with water damage, when left untouched, carpet can trap moisture and create mold underneath.

The average cost of carpet, including product and installation, is $3.50 per square foot.

Vinyl Plank or Vinyl Tile Flooring

Luxury vinyl plank is an easy to clean flooring that is an affordable option for any home. It stays warm in the colder temperatures, is more difficult to damage. Luxury vinyl plank is water-resistant, and stains can be easily removed from it.

Many renovators are choosing luxury vinyl plank because it mimics the look of real hardware flooring. You can achieve the same warm, classic aesthetics at a much lower price.

It can be installed DIY to save money and has an easy installation process to get it installed quickly, and cheaply. When installing luxury vinyl plank, it’s important to make sure that the floor is level before placing, otherwise the pieces may pop out of place. Luxury vinyl plank does not require an underlayment, helping with cost reduction.

Even though luxury vinyl plank is easy to install, it can gauge and dent easier than other materials. If poorly maintained can show its age. As well, manufacturing this material in some circumstances can be harmful from the chemicals it was made from.

The average cost for vinyl plank or tile flooring, including product and installation, is $2.50 to $3.30 per square foot.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is a common substitute for hardwood, as it has a similar look for a fraction of the cost. Installation is an easy and inexpensive process; the flooring snaps together in place, with no nails and glue needed. It can even be placed over existing floors, but an underlayment is necessary. Laminate is easy to keep clean, durable and is available in a large variety of colors and patterns to easily match any furniture pieces within your home.

While laminate is water-resistant, like other flooring options, it can suffer from water damage and shouldn’t be installed in rooms where water damage is more likely. Laminate doesn’t have the same resale value as hardwood, being that it is a cheaper material. It cannot be sanded or refinished as hardwood does, and may need replacement if it gets worn down. As well, it can release chemicals as a part of the manufacturing process.

The average cost of laminate flooring, including product and installation, is $5.50 per square foot.

Linoleum Flooring

If you are looking for a flooring textile that is built to last, linoleum is the floor for you. It can endure for decades and is easy to clean. It’s a thick material, and comes in a broad selection of colors, and is soft on your feet, as it has some give to it as you walk, with a more cushioned effect.

Linoleum is installed with glue-down sheets and snap-together tiles, making it less of a hassle to DIY in your home. It may require an underlayment unless you are putting the new linoleum on top of the old. It doesn’t emit harmful chemicals, because it is made with biodegradable material, making it safer for the environment.

Although linoleum is very durable and a lot cheaper, it can be damaged with sharp objects; it can be easily cut or nicked. It’s not recommended to have linoleum in rooms with heavy water usage, such as in laundry rooms. Sunlight can be hard on pigment, and the coloring of the floor can fade over time if it’s exposed to too much sunlight.

The average cost of linoleum flooring, including product and installation, is $3.30 to $4.20 per square foot.

Cork Flooring

Cork flooring is less commonly found in homes, but shouldn’t be counted out as an option. It’s a very soft material and can be stood on comfortable for long periods of time. It’s commonly found in kitchens, bedrooms, and basements. Cork can be resurfaced much like hardwood, which can be done by adding a stain or new finish. It will require an underlayment to retain its soft feel. A bonus to cork flooring is that it’s hypoallergenic, and won’t accumulate dust, hair and other material, making it a good choice for people with allergies.

Cork, however, is very easy to damage. Sharp objects can puncture the flooring, along with heavy furniture leaving marks where it’s kept. Too much sunlight can damage cork and cause the color to fade, and it can buckle in more humid climates. It’s also important to keep the floor dry and avoid water damage.

The average cost of cork flooring, including product and installation, is $5.00 to $14.00 per square foot.

Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo flooring is another less common flooring textile. It has a similar make to hardwood and gives any room a modern look. Bamboo flooring will enhance the resale value of your home and is easy to repair because it can be easily sanded and refinished to change the look. Underlayment is required to keep the floor stable and acts as soundproofing as well. It’s a very durable option and can last for years to come.

Bamboo material can suffer water damage like the rest and doesn’t work as well in more humid climates. When purchasing bamboo material, it is important to research the quality of the product you’re buying, because cheap bamboo can appear similar. The cheap bamboo isn’t made to last as long, so getting the right kind will be easy to spot.

The average cost of bamboo flooring, including product and installation, is $7.84 per square foot.

What to Know About Cabinet Refacing

Cabinet refacing is different than replacing or painting. A full replacement is where the entire cabinet, exterior door and interior compartment, is replaced, hence the name. Painting refers to only surface work, while the cabinets themselves remain unaltered.

On the other hand, cabinet refacing is when you keep the cabinet boxes but replace the doors and drawer fronts. It can create the look of new cabinets altogether.

Cabinet refacing gives you the ability to completely revamp the look of your cabinets without having to pay for a total replacement. This is particularly useful if the internal compartments are in good condition.

It’s often an aesthetic move, as refacing allows you to alter the appearance of your kitchen cabinets. Doing so can change the look of your kitchen entirely.

From on-site preparation to cabinet preparation to installation, the procedure is designed with superior craftsmanship in mind, so don’t stress that a refacing won’t get the job done.

What’s It Going to Cost?

Reports from HomeAdvisor note that the average national cost a homeowner will pay for cabinet refacing is $6684. Note, this is for the United States, but Canada will be very similar.

The primary indicator of cost is the number of cabinets that need to be replaced. From there, it’s the material that matters. Solid wood, for instance, is going to cost significantly more than something with plastic laminate.

Refer to this guide to get a better understanding of how much your refacing will cost and why it costs that.

Costs vary widely, but expect to pay $4000 to $9000 to reface all your kitchen cabinets. Again, this is determined by the number of cabinets in your kitchen and the materials the cabinets are made of.

Qualities to look for in a general contractor

Interior renovation by ICM

Home renovations can be exciting, but they’re also a significant investment in money and energy. Hiring a quality general contractor will ensure you get the most from your renovation dollars. The right company also provides a smooth, stress-free process for your home projects.

Integral Construction Management (ICM) in Sherwood Park offers a wide range of general contracting and construction services. Here they share what qualities you should look for when hiring a general contractor:

Experience

Like everything, the more experience someone has in a specific field, the better they are at it. The same goes for home renovations and construction projects. You don’t want to be a new contractor’s first project. Instead, hire a knowledgeable contractor with years of experience in the industry and a good reputation among peers and customers.
