custom home theatre Edmonton

Table of Contents

Introduction

Home entertainment has evolved far beyond standard televisions and soundbars. Today’s homeowners are investing in fully integrated home theatre systems in Edmonton that deliver cinematic experiences from the comfort of their own homes.

A professionally designed home theatre combines high-performance audio and video with seamless smart control. Companies like Shore 2 Shore Automation specialize in building custom solutions that integrate technology, design, and usability into one cohesive system.

What Defines a Modern Home Theatre

A modern home theatre is more than just a large screen. It is a carefully designed environment that includes:

  • High-definition or 4K/8K displays or projectors
  • Surround sound or immersive audio systems
  • Acoustic optimization
  • Lighting control
  • Smart automation integration

These systems are designed to replicate—and often exceed—the experience of a commercial cinema.

The Importance of Professional Design

Every home is different, which is why custom design is essential. Professional home theatre installation in Edmonton takes into account:

  • Room size and layout
  • Viewing distance and angles
  • Speaker placement and acoustics
  • Lighting conditions

Without proper design, even high-end equipment may underperform.

Audio and Video Integration

One of the biggest advantages of a professional home theatre is integration. Shore 2 Shore Automation provides solutions that connect audio and video systems into a unified platform.

This allows homeowners to:

  • Control everything from a single interface
  • Switch between streaming, gaming, and live TV seamlessly
  • Create personalized entertainment settings

Smart Home Integration

Modern home theatres are often part of a larger smart home ecosystem. Systems can integrate with:

  • Lighting control
  • Motorized shades
  • Climate systems
  • Whole-home audio

This allows users to create scenes such as “Movie Night,” where lights dim, shades close, and audio/video systems activate instantly.

Shore 2 Shore’s automation systems enable control of multiple home systems from one interface, simplifying the user experience

Benefits of a Custom Home Theatre

Homeowners investing in home theatre systems in Edmonton gain several advantages:

  • Enhanced entertainment quality with immersive audio and visuals
  • Convenience through centralized control
  • Increased home value
  • Personalized design tailored to lifestyle

Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid

Without professional guidance, homeowners may encounter:

  • Poor speaker placement
  • Incorrect screen sizing
  • Inadequate wiring infrastructure
  • Lack of system integration

These issues can reduce performance and limit future upgrades.

Future-Proofing Your Home Theatre

Technology evolves quickly. A well-designed system allows for upgrades without complete replacement. Structured wiring and scalable systems ensure long-term flexibility.

Conclusion

A professionally designed home theatre system transforms everyday entertainment into a premium experience. With the right design, integration, and technology, homeowners can enjoy cinema-quality performance tailored to their space and lifestyle.

From Sweeping Floors to Building Patchmasters Drywall Repair: A 3rd-Generation Story

Patchmasters Drywall Repair owner sharing his 3rd-generation drywall contractor journey in Alberta

From Sweeping Floors to now Building a Brand:

My Journey in the Drywall Industry as a 3rd generation contractor and now employing the 4th Being a business owner and entrepreneur means getting comfortable with both winning and failing—sometimes in the same week. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, but one I wouldn’t trade for anything.

My journey in drywall started 38 years ago, back in the summer of 1986—the same year as Expo 86 in Vancouver. While the world marveled at futuristic exhibits, I was getting my first taste of the construction industry through my father’s company, Fehr Drywall. Based in Abbotsford, BC, they were tackling projects across the Lower Mainland, including work on the Expo grounds. My early years in the trade? Cleaning up scrap drywall and sweeping floors—the true apprentice experience.

From Apprentice to Entrepreneur

By 1998, I moved to Calgary, jumped on a boarding crew with some buddies, and quickly moved up to running projects as a site foreman. Then came my first big break: when my employer’s company shut down, I partnered with my boss and launched Pro West Drywall. We hit the ground running, closing out $4.5 million in contracts in our first year.

Not long into our second year, I decided to move back to BC, where I teamed up with my father again to form Pro West Interiors BC, working on projects in Kelowna and the Okanagan.

Then, disaster struck.

Losing Everything & Starting Over

In 2003, the Okanagan Mountain Park Fire—Canada’s largest natural disaster at the time—destroyed my home and everything I owned. With nothing left, I moved back to Calgary to start over. Again.

For a few years, I drifted between jobs, trying to find my next move. Then, during a business presentation at a multi-level marketing event, I unknowingly made the best sale of my life—Amanda. My future wife. The results? Let’s just say, I nailed that presentation.

Fast forward nearly 20 years together, 16 years of marriage, and three amazing daughters: Brooklyn (15), McKenzie (13), and Emma (10).

Mastering the Trade & Hitting Big Numbers

From 2007-2008, Amanda and I moved to Kelowna to start our family, and I went back to work with my dad. I was eventually “pushed” (or promoted, depending on who you ask) into estimating, where I spent a decade behind a computer, learning how to read drawings and bid projects.

Then the 2008 financial crash hit. With builders unable to secure financing, work dried up. Back to Calgary we went.

Over time, I reconnected with past contacts and landed major apartment projects across Calgary, Kelowna, Peachland, Victoria, and Red Deer. In 2019, I set a personal milestone: $10 million in contracts and sales in a single year.

When the Industry Breaks You (Twice)

Then, the first round of U.S. tariffs hit, shaking up material costs. Just as we were recovering, COVID-19 came along and finished the job—our projects weren’t viable anymore.

Determined, I struck out on my own, completing buildings in Red Deer and Lacombe, but when a developer went under, I found myself last on the list of unpaid trades. Pennies on the dollar was all we got.

That’s when I had an epiphany: The construction industry is broken. The low profit margins and high risks made me rethink everything.

A Fresh Start: Building a Service-Based Business

In 2019, I decided to shift gears and focus on drywall repair Calgary, with a strong emphasis on ceiling texture repair and painting. Instead of chasing high-risk contracts, I built Patchmasters Drywall Repair, a service-based business designed to be sustainable, scalable, and customer-focused.

Today, we help homeowners with everything from drywall hole repair to clean, seamless finishes that look like the damage never happened. We also specialize in popcorn ceiling repair, matching texture and blending paint so the patch doesn’t stand out.

Now, we’re growing steadily, embracing social media, marketing, and top-tier customer service to build a brand that stands out. I truly believe we’re just scratching the surface of what’s possible. The opportunities are endless—including supporting residential drywall repair needs across Alberta.

Notable Achievements

• Fastest building completed: 62 units in a 4-story apartment in just 13 days.
• Hit $10 million in sales in 2019.
• Overcame multiple economic downturns, wildfires, and unpaid contracts—and still here, stronger than ever.

The Future

As we continue to grow, the focus is on:
Expanding into new markets (Jasper for new builds, Calgary for hail damage repairs).
Scaling operations while maintaining quality.
Strengthening our marketing and customer service.

Final Thoughts

I’ve learned that business is all about adaptation, resilience, and relationships. I want Patchmasters to be known for quality, reliability, and a little bit of fun along the way.

What Homeowners Really Want From a Drywall Repair Company (38 Years of Lessons)

Technician from Patchmasters Drywall Repair performing clean drywall repair with dust control in a homeowner’s living room

What Homeowners Really Want From a Drywall Repair Company (And What 38 Years Has Taught Me)

After decades in construction—and the last several years building Patchmasters Drywall Repair as a service-based business—I’ve learned something important:

When homeowners call for drywall or ceiling repairs, they’re rarely just buying “a patch.”

They’re buying peace of mind.

They want their home to feel normal again. They want clear expectations, a clean process, and a finish they won’t stare at forever. Here are the biggest lessons we’ve learned about what customers truly want—and what we do to deliver it.

Table of Contents

1) “Please keep it clean.” (Dust control matters more than ever)

Drywall work is inherently dusty. Anyone claiming “zero dust” is selling fantasy.

But there’s a big difference between:

  • drywall work that turns your home into a construction zone, and

  • drywall work that’s planned, protected, and controlled.

Most homeowners want:

  • as little dust as possible

  • protected floors and pathways

  • contained work areas

  • a crew that cleans up like professionals

At Patchmasters, we build the dust-control plan into the job, and we scale it based on the home, the scope, and the customer’s budget. Some clients want a straightforward repair with basic protection. Others want a “white-glove” approach with higher levels of containment and surface protection—especially in homes with premium finishes, high-end flooring, detailed millwork, or recently renovated spaces.

No judgment either way. It’s simply about matching expectations + risk + budget—whether it’s a small touch-up or a full residential drywall repair project.

2) Ceiling repairs are where expectations go to die (if you don’t tell the truth)

Walls are forgiving. Ceilings are not.

Ceiling repairs—especially on textured or previously painted ceilings—are one of the easiest ways for a homeowner to end up disappointed, even when the workmanship is solid.

Here’s the reality: a patch on a ceiling can “flash” (show differently than the surrounding area), especially when there’s:

  • strong side-lighting from windows

  • pot lights or surface-mounted fixtures

  • long sightlines across a room

  • smooth or semi-smooth finishes that highlight every shadow

This is the same concept the industry calls critical lighting—conditions that make imperfections far more visible.

Why ceiling patches often fail the “looks perfect” test
Even if the texture matches, you’re still fighting:

  • different paint layers

  • aging/yellowing around the patch

  • roller patterns and sheen differences

  • subtle surface waves that only show at certain angles

I can walk into most homes and spot old ceiling patches instantly. The funny part? Homeowners often didn’t even notice until I point it out.

The truth we tell customers
If you want the ceiling to look as close to original as possible, the best approach is often:

That’s how you restore uniformity—especially under critical lighting. This matters a lot for ceiling texture repair, where blending is everything.

When a ceiling patch can be the right move
There are situations where patching makes sense, such as:

We’ll do patches when it makes sense—but we’ll be very clear about the “ceiling reality” first, including when popcorn ceiling repair is the best-value option versus full refinishing.

3) Customers want options, not pressure

One thing we’ve learned: homeowners don’t want to be sold.

They want to be guided.

A professional quote isn’t just a price—it’s a plan. We build options around:

That usually looks like:

  • Good: targeted repair, basic protection, practical finish expectations

  • Better: improved containment, upgraded finish steps, better blending strategy

  • Best: full-plane ceiling refinish / full skim strategy for the most consistent results

This approach reduces surprises, protects trust, and prevents that awful feeling homeowners get when they pay for a repair… then can’t stop looking at it.

4) “Can you just do the painting too?” Yes—and here’s why that matters

Homeowners often ask us to handle painting, and it’s not just about convenience (though that’s a big part of it).

Painting is also quality control.

Here’s a truth most people don’t know until they live it:

After drywall is sanded, some imperfections won’t show until after primer is applied. That’s why high-end finishing often requires a prime coat and then a final touch-up pass.

This is consistent with how higher finish levels are achieved in practice—especially where lighting and smooth finishes make everything visible.

When painting is split off to a homeowner or a separate painter, that “prime-and-touch-up” step often gets missed—not because anyone is careless, but because it’s easy to underestimate how much a primer coat reveals.

So when we do both drywall and painting, we control the full process and the final result is typically better—especially after drywall hole repair where the surface needs to disappear.

5) Communication and respect aren’t “extras”—they’re part of the job

Drywall repair happens inside someone’s home. That means we’re in their personal space, around their family, pets, schedules, and stress.

Many homeowners calling us are already dealing with:

So we treat communication like a trade skill:

  • show up when we say we will

  • explain the plan clearly

  • be honest about limitations

  • keep expectations realistic

  • fix what needs fixing if something isn’t right

We’re not perfect. But we do strive to make it right.

6) Not every customer is a fit—and that’s okay

This is a tough one, but it’s real.

Some customers have expectations that don’t match:

A service-based business lives and dies by trust, communication, and alignment. If we can’t align expectations upfront, it’s better to be honest early than to fight a battle no one can win later.

7) Why we shifted from new construction to service work

I spent years working in large-scale construction—major builders, big projects, big numbers.

But new construction carries major realities:

Service work is a different world. It’s more personal, more accountable, and in many ways more satisfying—because you get to solve real problems for real people and watch the stress leave their face when the home looks right again.

That moment—when a homeowner sees the finished result and feels relief—never gets old.

8) We keep upgrading our tools and methods (because clean + fast + high quality wins)

The industry has changed, and so have the tools.

Two modern upgrades that have been game-changers for us:

Festool PLANEX (dust-controlled long-reach sanding)
We use the Festool PLANEX LHS 2 225 EQI-Plus—a long-reach drywall sander with an integrated LED light ring designed to reveal imperfections while sanding and help achieve higher surface quality.

That LED “grazing light” effect matters because it shows problems before paint does—saving time and improving results.

Skimming blades for better ceilings (faster and cleaner finish work)
For skim coating ceilings after texture removal (popcorn or otherwise), modern smoothing blade systems are a huge advantage. We often use skimming blades like the Columbia Tools Tomahawk system.

These tools help us move material more consistently and efficiently across broad surfaces—especially important when converting textured ceilings into smooth, painted finishes.

9) Turning textured ceilings into smooth ceilings: the Level 5 conversation

Homeowners love the look of smooth, flat ceilings—but they don’t always realize what it takes to make them look right under real lighting.

A Level 5 finish is typically the highest finish level and involves applying a skim coat over the surface to create a more uniform appearance—particularly important in areas with critical lighting or where higher-sheen/darker finishes can highlight flaws.

In the real world, after removing ceiling texture, it often takes multiple skim coats (not just one “magic” coat) to get the ceiling where it needs to be for a truly smooth painted finish—especially on older ceilings or where the substrate varies.

Final thought: Homeowners want confidence, not guesswork
If I had to summarize what customers want in one sentence, it’s this:

They want to know the job will be done cleanly, professionally, and with honest expectations—so they can stop worrying and get their home back.

If you’re dealing with a ceiling repair, water damage, texture removal, or drywall patching and want clear options (not pressure), Patchmasters Drywall Repair would be happy to help—especially if you’re looking for drywall repair Calgary and surrounding areas.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal vs. Repair: What It Really Takes to Make It Look Smooth

Skim coating a ceiling after popcorn texture removal for a smooth Level 5 style finish

Homeowners love the idea of smooth ceilings—clean, modern, and bright. But the truth is: the “after” photo is easy. The process to get there is where most people get blindsided.

If you’re deciding between repairing a textured ceiling or removing it entirely, here’s what 38 years in the trade (and years of service-focused work) has taught me.

Table of Contents

The first question: Do you want “better,” or do you want “smooth”?

There’s a big difference between:

  • repairing a damaged area and blending the texture, and

  • converting the entire ceiling into a smooth finish

If you want smooth, the job becomes less “patching” and more finishing—often requiring multiple steps to meet real-world lighting expectations.

Why popcorn ceilings are tricky to “patch perfectly”

On popcorn ceilings, a patch can stand out because:

  • the texture pattern is random

  • the paint builds up unevenly over time

  • repairs sit in a slightly different plane than the existing ceiling

That’s why popcorn ceiling repair is mostly about setting expectations. We can make it look very good, but under strong lighting, some patches can still show.

Removal sounds simple… until you get to the finishing

Some homeowners think popcorn removal is one job. In reality, it’s two jobs:

  1. remove the texture

  2. make the ceiling look smooth and uniform

Once the texture is gone, you’re often dealing with:

That’s where skim coating comes in, and why smooth ceilings often become a “Level 5 conversation.”

The “Level 5” reality (and why it matters)

A Level 5-style finish is about uniformity—especially under critical lighting.

After texture removal, it often takes:

This is also why homeowners who try to do it themselves often end up calling for ceiling texture repair after the fact—because the ceiling looks fine until paint reveals everything.

Repair vs. full refinish: how we guide the decision

We usually build options so the homeowner can choose based on goals and budget:

Option A: Spot repair + blend
Best when:

Option B: Section refinish
Best when:

Option C: Full ceiling skim + smooth finish
Best when:

  • you want modern smooth ceilings

  • the room has pot lights, windows, or strong side-lighting

  • you want the most consistent result

This approach helps avoid that frustrating outcome where the patch is technically done… but your eyes go straight to it every time.

Don’t forget the walls: damage often creates wall work too

Texture removal and ceiling repairs often create small dings or edge damage, especially around corners, crown details, or light fixtures. That’s where small drywall hole repair or wall touch-ups may be included as part of a complete job—so it all finishes cleanly.

The end goal: a ceiling you stop thinking about

That’s the real win. Homeowners don’t want to “notice” their ceiling. They want it to disappear into the room and look normal again.

If you’re weighing popcorn ceiling repair versus removal and a full smooth finish, Patchmasters can walk you through honest options—no pressure, just a plan. We handle residential drywall repair and ceiling work across Alberta, including drywall repair Calgary customers who want clean, professional results.

How Can I Refurbish an Office on a Budget?

Refreshing your office doesn’t always require a major renovation or a huge investment. In many cases, a few practical upgrades and maintenance improvements can make a workspace feel more modern, organised and productive without stretching your budget. If your office is starting to feel tired or cluttered, a smart refurbishment plan can deliver noticeable improvements while keeping costs under control.

Start With Small Maintenance Fixes

One of the most affordable ways to improve an office environment is to address the small repairs that often get overlooked. Minor issues such as broken fixtures, leaking taps, damaged ceiling tiles or faulty lighting can quickly make a workspace feel neglected. Fixing these problems not only improves the appearance of the office but also helps create a more comfortable environment for staff.

Simple tasks such as replacing bulbs, repairing fittings or clearing blocked facilities can have an immediate impact and are usually inexpensive compared with larger refurbishment projects.

Improve Organisation and Storage

A cluttered office can make even a modern workspace feel chaotic. Introducing better storage solutions is a cost-effective way to transform the space. Adding shelves, organising cables and installing practical storage units can free up desk space and make the office look cleaner and more professional.

Flat-pack furniture and shelving systems can often be installed quickly and provide a simple way to improve organisation without major building work. Rearranging existing furniture can also improve workflow and create a more efficient layout.

Upgrade Key Work Areas

Instead of refurbishing the entire office at once, focus on the areas that have the biggest impact. Meeting rooms, reception areas and collaborative workspaces are often the first places clients and visitors see, so improving these spaces can quickly enhance the overall impression of your workplace.

Small improvements such as mounting whiteboards, improving lighting or updating furniture layouts can help these spaces feel more functional and welcoming without requiring a large investment.

Refresh the Look of the Office

Sometimes the biggest change comes from simple visual updates. Replacing damaged ceiling tiles, tidying exposed cables, and refreshing fixtures can make an office feel far more professional. Even small adjustments can improve the overall atmosphere and create a workspace that staff enjoy using.

These types of improvements can often be completed quickly and with minimal disruption to the working day.

Use Professional Handyman Services

Many office refurbishment tasks fall into the category of practical maintenance rather than large-scale construction. This is where professional handyman services can provide a cost-effective solution.

Experienced tradespeople can handle a wide range of tasks, from installing shelving and assembling furniture to fixing plumbing issues or repairing fixtures. Because these jobs are completed efficiently and with the right tools, businesses can avoid the time and frustration of trying to manage multiple small repairs themselves.

With the right approach, refurbishing an office on a budget is entirely achievable. By focusing on practical improvements, better organisation and targeted upgrades, businesses can create a cleaner, more functional workspace without the need for a full renovation.

What Causes Squeaky Floorboards?

Squeaky floorboards are a common issue in many homes, particularly in older properties. While the noise can be annoying, it is usually not a serious structural problem. In most cases, squeaks happen when parts of the flooring move slightly against each other as you walk across them.

Understanding what causes squeaky floorboards can help you decide whether it’s a quick repair or a job worth calling in a professional to fix.

Movement Between Floorboards and Joists

One of the most common causes of squeaky floorboards is movement between the floorboards and the wooden joists beneath them. Over time, nails can loosen or timber can shift slightly due to normal wear and tear.

When someone walks across the floor, the boards move up and down slightly, rubbing against the nails or joists and creating the squeaking sound. This type of issue is very common in older homes where flooring has been in place for many years.

Changes in Temperature and Humidity

Wood naturally expands and contracts depending on temperature and moisture levels. During colder months or when indoor heating is used frequently, floorboards may shrink slightly. In warmer or more humid conditions, the timber can expand again.

This constant movement can create small gaps between boards or loosen fixings, which often leads to squeaks when pressure is applied.

Loose Nails or Fixings

Another common cause is loose nails or screws. Over time, repeated foot traffic can gradually loosen the fasteners holding floorboards in place. When the board moves slightly around the nail or screw, it produces the familiar creaking or squeaking sound.

Replacing or tightening these fixings can often solve the problem quickly.

Subfloor Issues

In some cases, the squeak may come from the subfloor beneath the visible floorboards. If the subfloor is not properly secured to the joists, movement can occur between layers of flooring. This is more common in areas with high foot traffic, such as hallways, stairs, or living rooms.

When to Call a Professional

While squeaky floors are usually harmless, they can become frustrating if the noise is constant. A professional handyman can identify the exact cause and secure the boards properly without damaging the floor.

For homeowners dealing with small repairs like this, professional odd jobs London services can help resolve the problem quickly. Fixing squeaky floorboards, tightening loose fittings, and handling other minor household repairs are all typical tasks that experienced handymen deal with every day.

Addressing these small issues early can help keep your home quieter and prevent bigger maintenance problems later on.

Excellent Experience with Deck Crew-Highly Recommend!

I needed a rotting fence replaced, and Deck Crew made the entire process smooth and stress-free. Alex came out promptly to assess the fence and provided a very reasonable quote. We chose them for the job, and they did not disappoint! The team quickly and professionally removed the old fence and built a new one that looks perfect. Their craftsmanship and attention to detail were outstanding. I would highly recommend Deck Crew to anyone in need of a new fence or deck!

Customer Feedback

Zeke visited our property to price a new 6 ft wooden fence (using 6″ by 6″ fence posts) along the sides of our property, and two gates. The workers were polite and efficient in their work, and tidied up at the end of each day. They were also respectful of our neighbour’s wishes when working near sensitive plants/trees at the fence line. The end product looks great, and we’re very happy with our choice of Otto Deck. We would recommend them to friends and family.

Customer Feedback

Geoff and the HDD team built our back deck in summer 2018, and our experience was so good that we didn’t even bother to seek quotes from any other company when we built our front porch in fall 2019. Geoff never made us feel silly for asking questions, never used high-pressure sales tactics, and works hard to make sure that the plans are what you want. The team provides excellent communications in the lead-up to the build, and checks in regularly throughout the building process. Their work is unbeatable–the final product is beautiful. Love our decks from HDD!

Toronto Deck Building FAQs

Once you decide on one of the best deck builders in Toronto, it will be time to consider the actual deck design and construction. Here are some frequently asked questions about building a new deck in Toronto.

What type of materials are commonly used and available for Toronto decks?

Common materials for building decks in Toronto include PVC or other composites, hardwoods (sealed and stained), or pressure-treated wood. Specialty materials are also available from certain contractors.

How long will it take to build a new deck?

Timelines and schedules are one of the first things you’ll want to discuss with your deck contractor. The time required for a new deck usually depends on how large or complex the project is. For example, a simple rectangular deck with a railing and three small stairs will take less time than any new deck with additions. Those additions that will add a significant amount of time include pergolas, custom seating areas and benches, gazebos, or other shade structures. In terms of complexity, elements such as custom shapes, multiple deck levels, or pool and hot tub surroundings may add time to the project.

What materials are better for a deck in Toronto?

The material choice is always up to the homeowner. However, there are options considered less maintenance-intensive, like composite decking products. These are lower maintenance, as they don’t require all the restaining or repainting that natural wood does. Certain styles and looks are easier to achieve with natural woods like cedar or treated pine. Talk to your contractor about the deck’s main uses and the level of maintenance you’re comfortable with before choosing a deck material.

Will I need a permit to build the new deck?

According to the City of Toronto, any deck attached to a house requires a permit. There are a few exceptions, however, for certain types of detached decks. Learn more about obtaining your deck-building permit in Toronto.
