Chinook Exteriors Inc. Calgary Company Online Review & Ratings

Our experience with Chinook Exteriors Inc. was excellent. JF was knowledgeable and took time to answer all our questions. Reasonably priced, offered a seniors discount and was true to his word that when the work was completed there would be no hidden surprises. Installers were pleasant, well organized and took pride in there workmanship. They kept a clean worksite. Cayla in the office was friendly, helpful and relayed messages promptly. This company is conscientious and takes pride in quality workmanship and prompt good service.

House and garage needed to have the 40 old soffit, facia, drip edge and eavestrough replaced . The owner, Jean-Francois, was out within a day to give an estimate and the price was reasonable. The whole experience with Chinook was excellent. Cayla in the front office was a pleasure to deal with and the installation crew, Mathieu and Nic, did a fantastic job and were finished in two and a half days.

– Keith P

We just had eavestrough, soffit, and fascias done by Chinook Exteriors on our rental property in Calgary. Was an absolute breeze working with this company from start to finish. They are honest, reliable and a do what they say they are going to do with no surprises. They communicated all aspects of the job as it was being done since we aren’t physically in Alberta. They showed up when they said they would, my tenants said the jobsite was left clean and we are just so happy with the work and staff at Chinook. We will for sure recommend them to anyone looking for exterior work on their home.

– Laura M

Chinook exteriors took on the job of replacing our old vinyl which covered the original clapboard. We had many companies provide a quote, Chinook exteriors being the only one who said adding the 1 1/2” under the new vinyl was minimal extra work. All the others added thousands of dollars, as they would have to add strapping to secure the siding to since their nail guns wouldn’t reach the wall studs. Chinook uses longer nails. Dennis, Cayla, JF, JP and Oliver were excellent at communicating, hearing and responding to concerns. High quality work. Definitely would recommend.

M.G. Cabinets & Millwork Ltd. Winnipeg Company Online Review & Ratings

Made to Measure since 1984. M.G. Cabinets & Millwork Ltd. celebrates 40 years!

M.G. Cabinets & Millwork Ltd. was started in 1984 by Marc Goulet. Marc has been making furniture and other wood products from an early age and always had a knack for creating beautiful pieces for his customers.

He decided in his early 20s that he would become a woodworker and enrolled at Red River College in their Carpentry course. During this course, a section was dedicated to cabinetmaking, which cemented his desire to create beautiful custom cabinetry and make it his career. Even before finishing his apprenticeship, Marc had already started making high-quality kitchen cabinets for his customers. Marc was living in Winnipeg at the time with his wife Lynne, making cabinets in the basement of their rental unit, and decided they needed more space. They both wanted to move back to their hometown of St. Malo and lay down some roots to start a family and launch their business.

Exceptional quality and service from this home-grown custom cabinetry and millwork business.

There were no cabinet shops in the area, so they wanted to fill a need in the surrounding community. They purchased some land, built their house and shop in the backyard, and started M.G. Cabinets and Carpentry (the original name) in 1984. A couple of years later, in March of 1986, Marc graduated from his Carpentry apprenticeship, became a Journeyman in his craft, and continued making cabinetry in his backyard shop. Later that same year, their son Darrell was born.

Marc continued making kitchen cabinetry in the backyard shop for most of the 1990s and finally decided to expand at the turn of the millennium. They purchased a large commercial lot on Highway 59 at the edge of St. Malo and built our showroom and manufacturing plant, which is still located there.

Since then, the plant has gone through two expansions to accommodate new machinery and warehousing space for the many kitchens they work on throughout the year. Finally, after almost 40 years in business, Marc has reached the age where retirement is creeping closer to reality, and it is time to pass the torch. His son Darrell has been working at M.G. Cabinets & Millwork Ltd. since 2007. He went through the cabinetmaking apprenticeship course at Red River College and became a Journeyman in 2010, all in preparation to take over the business.

Early in 2022, the business changed hands and is now owned by Darrell, who has continued to uphold Marc’s quality standards and customer satisfaction for the past 40 years. Marc and Darrell still work together to this day and strive to help their customers get the kitchen they’ve always dreamed of.

Bringing new life to your home or business.

M.G. Cabinets & Millwork offers fine-quality custom cabinets and carpentry. Count on them for kitchen and bathroom renovations and custom pieces like entertainment units, china cabinets, bars, and office storage. In addition, they offer commercial services, including store fixtures, reception counters and storage cabinets.

They carry many different door styles, wood species, and hardware selections. Their shop uses state-of-the-art equipment to build cabinets customized to your specific space and needs. Contact them to start your project!

Water conservation considerations when design your landscape

Nerw Blog was submitted by Earthworm Landscape Design Co in Edmonton.

With increasing pressures on water availability and lingering thoughts of drought, it is important to consider landscape practices that will not increase the demand for water and a way to keep rainwater in our yards for use in our gardens, be they ornamental or vegetable. Many methods can be employed. As professional landscape designers in Edmonton, we will share information about xeriscaping, watering habits, and mulching as a few water-saving methods to consider.

Xeriscaping

The word xeriscape in latin means “dry view” or “dry landscape”. There is an excellent book written by Canadian author Sara Williams called “Creating the Prairie Xeriscape’. The main principles of xeriscaping are designing for water conservation, improving soil, reducing lawn areas, efficient irrigation, mulching and appropriate plant selection. It does not need to look like a desert to fulfill the design principles. There are more plants than you may think that are suitable for this application. Some of our favourites include:

Trees Shrubs Evergreens Perennials
Amur Maple (Acer ginnala)

Flowering Crabapple (Malus spp.)

Burr Oak (Quercus macrocarpa)

Showy Mountain Ash (Sorbus decora)

Ivory Silk Tree Lilac (Syringa reticulata ‘Ivory Silk’)

Saskatoon (Amelanchier alnifolia)

Red Osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea)

Potentilla (Potentilla spp.)

Dwarf Korean Lilac (Syringa meyeri)

Mockorange (Philadelphus lewisii)

Upright Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum)

Spreading Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis)

Dwarf Blue Globe Spruce (Picea pungens ‘Glauca Globosa’)

Weeping Norway Spruce (Picea abies ‘Pendula’)

Chalet Swiss Stone Pine (Pinus cembra ‘Chalet’)

Yarrow (Achillea spp.)

Karl Foerster Reed Grass (Calamagrostis spp.)

Globe Thistle (Echinops ritro)

Dalily (Hemerocallis spp.)

Sedum (Sedum spp.)

Watering Habits

In most new neighbourhoods, considerations for water conservation are actually becoming requirements. Homeowners are encouraged to think of how they can capture and reuse water in their yards. One of the easiest ways to capture water is a rain barrel at every downspout. This water can then be used freely as needed to water the garden, lessening the reliance on city water. It may seem cumbersome to lug watering cans, so consider placing your rain barrel higher, say 24”, off the ground. This will allow for ease of filling your watering can, but you can also use gravity for soaker hoses or small drip irrigation systems.

New plantings

Let’s discuss new plantings for a moment. Whenever someone plants a new plant, I always recommend that you soak it in a bucket before planting. Then, afterwards, you water only once the top 3-4” dry out. This will encourage the root system of the plant to explore the surrounding soil, develop a strong root system and not be reliant on your application of water. Strong root systems also have a great ability to capture large amounts of water once established.  I live on an acreage, and this is the method I employ. Our water is trucked in, so there is no way that I am going to “baby” any new plantings. It truly builds a resilient plant. The only plants I water are in pots or in the greenhouse, all using captured rainwater or snowmelt. Now, let’s look at our lawns.

Lawns

The grass is always greener in the yard where the sprinkler runs. Wait, that’s not how the saying goes…Let’s take a moment to think about our green grass. Lawns require a lot of water to remain lush and green, not to mention fertilizer. Consider an alternative such as clover or reducing the amount of grass that you have. You could also use rainwater to water your lawn with a simple irrigation system.

Mulching

Mulch is as simple as a layer of material that covers the ground. Mulch holds moisture and also keeps the roots of the plants cool. This reduces the need for extra water. Now, not every mulch is created equally. Rock mulch will actually increase the need for water and keep your plants hot. The soil heats quickly, and therefore, you have more evaporation.

You may be thinking, so…what is the best type to use?  Bark mulch. It comes in many forms, cedar, pine, spruce, etc. A thick layer of clean straw or fall leaves is also a wonderful mulch material. They all perform relatively the same in which when they are moist, they stay moist for a long time. Be sure not to bury the trunks of trees and shrubs or the crowns of your perennials so they don’t rot with this extra moisture. Happy plants all around.

As a landscape design company in Edmonton, one question we often get is, what about landscape fabric? The simple answer is, if there are plants involved, say no to landscape fabric. You want the soil surface to be as permeable as possible, and you want to avoid any runoff. Areas that are suitable for landscape fabric are spots where there are no plants; you intend on simply covering the ground with rock (prevents mixing of rock and soil) or under a deck or structure to prevent weeds. Those are the only places I recommend.

We hope that with this information, you will consider some or all of these practices when you tackle your next landscape project.
