Building Green

Building Green

Written by EcoRenew Contracting Ltd. in Edmonton

House today

Since establishing my environmentally conscious renovation business seven years ago, I have had the privilege of working on many amazing projects with green technologies and building methods. But one of the projects I am most proud of is the total renovation of our very first house.

One of the simplest things we can do to help our planet and work towards a greener future is to simply keep waste out of the landfill and give anything a second life with a little bit of TLC. I was fortunate that from a young age my parents fostered the idea of leaving the world a better place than I found it, and I know they are proud that I maintain this ethos as a renovator and general contractor in Edmonton today.

A green renovation done right

House at early stages of renovation

I recently received a call from the current owner of our first house. He let me know right off the bat that this was not a confrontational call. Instead, he proceeded to extol the virtues of the house and how well the renovation has held up. He was simply asking if I could let him know what was done and when it was done, as he was placing the house on the market for sale.

As prospective buyers like to know these things, I listed off all the projects and renovations we completed on the house and a smile began to grow on my face: new roof, dug around the foundation and did weeping tile and insulation, dug up the concrete floor in the basement and re-ran all underground plumbing, blew insulation in the original walls (without pulling them apart), refinished the hardwood floors, installed all new windows, blew in attic insulation, and of course, finished all the spaces to such an extent that they have lasted 15 years with nothing more than a few cosmetic changes.

Built green and built to last

My smile grew and grew as I remembered all the work and lessons that went into the space, but also because of the realization that this house held enough value that developers would not be tearing it down. Because of the work performed on the house, it could last another 80 years! This second life means that the house doesn’t end up in the landfill, the character of the neighbourhood doesn’t change, and I get a boost of happiness knowing that I played a part in creating more opportunities for this beautiful and comfortable bungalow to become a new home. All of the lessons I learned throughout the major home renovation of that small house have made it so that all the other houses I have worked on since are also less likely to see the landfill.

Multi-use basement renovation ideas

A basement renovation will add usable living space and resale value to your home. If you’re thinking about your basement renovation design plan, consider creating a multi-use space.

HW Home Improvements in Abbotsford are a professional home renovations and improvements company. They share some multi-use ways to renovate your basement:

Home theatre and kitchenette

Pairing a home theatre design with a small kitchenette is the perfect pairing for movie marathon nights. You can store or prepare snacks and food without ever having to press pause. The design is also ideal if you plan to redesign down the road or even sell. That electrical wiring for the home theatre can usually be repurposed for a home gym, living room, or band space. The kitchenette can be planned into a secondary entertainment space or expanded to accommodate a secondary suite. Potential buyers will love having plenty of options but also the appeal of the space as is.

Wine cellar and lounge area

Basements are a perfect place for a wine cellar, thanks to the cool and darker layout. You can also get creative with layout, décor, or size, depending on the shape and layout of your basement. That same aesthetic also plays into the benefits of adding a second living room or lounging area. That quiet space can tie in with the wine cellar style, and create a space for relaxing or spending time with loved ones, with or without wine in hand. Plus, whatever visual designs you create around the wine cellar are sure to be just as appealing for the adjacent living space.

Bathroom and playroom

This combination is an easy pairing, especially if the playroom is for children. Basement bathrooms are a big appeal when it comes to boosting value or attracting potential buyers. Think of all those saved trips running upstairs to use the bathroom. A playroom is easy to design around small children and maintain as they grow older, like turning it into a games room instead. The layout of a spacious playroom and a bathroom can later be designed for any other use. A home office, for example, or guest bedroom would both benefit from the existing bathroom addition.

Basement Renovations

HW Home Improvements offers renovations that add value, improve your home, and last for years. Their services include handyman help, renovations, decks, and general improvements. Whatever home service or change you need, their professionals can help.

Choosing BMW Electric for Your Home’s Electrical Work

If you’re looking to hire an electrician for a home project, BMW Electric in Winnipeg is the electrical team for you. With expertise in many areas of electrical work, their electricians can get any job done, big or small. Here are some home projects they can complete in your home.

Inspections

As your home ages, the electrical system ages too. If you live in an older home or haven’t checked up on your home’s electrical system in a long time, it may be a good time for an inspection. During an inspection, electricians will check things like your electrical panel, or any areas you may be experiencing issues. In some cases, they may have to cut out small sections of drywall to look for specific problem areas. Regular electrical inspections can give you more knowledge about your home’s electrical system, information on how to maintain it, and what steps to take next.

Upgrades

Electrical panels have a lifespan of approximately 20-30 years. If properly maintained, the panel may last longer. If you need more electrical capacity to run your modern home, or if your panel is reaching the end of its lifespan, it may be time to call in an electrician to upgrade it for you. BMW Electric can also perform other electrical upgrades including fixing aluminum wiring, installing new fixtures, or any electrical work required after damage or a restoration project.

Repairs or renovations

If you’re embarking on a home project, it’s a good time to have your electrical system checked. It’s also the perfect time to move around any electrical components you want or to add any features. Something BMW Electric specializes in is accent lighting, whether it be surrounding fireplaces, underneath kitchen cabinets, or inside your closet. No matter what kind of lighting you’re looking to install during your renovation, they can get the job done.

BMW Electric also offers electrical repairs. If you suspect you have an issue with your wiring, do not wait! Scorched outlets, burning smells, or circuits that constantly trip are all signs something is wrong. Prevent fire hazards and injury by having your electrical repairs dealt with right away.

Electricians in Winnipeg

Open 24 hours a day, BMW Electric is there for you and your home. Whether you need a small repair or a major renovation in your home, they got you covered. Their team has the experience to complete every project to the highest possible standard.

Save time and money rejuvenating or replacing cabinets

Is your cabinetry looking worn, damaged, or dated? Cabinetry restoration is an option for homeowners and can have your kitchen or bathroom looking new again. At a fraction of a complete cabinet renovation cost, refacing or replacement is a great option for homeowners to consider.

Tormynak Contracting in Calgary has options for homes with damaged cabinets, which can save time and money.

Replacement cabinets

Tormynak Contracting focuses on rebuilding or replacing damaged cabinets to match the existing ones. If you have partly damaged cabinetry, you might not have to replace all of it. Options are available to rebuild or replace the damaged items for your space to look how it used to. If it’s possible, you can replace or restore those damage cabinets. Otherwise, going with a custom build to match the set is also available to customers. Some damage doesn’t always mean that a complete replacement; custom could be the way to go.

Cabinet refacing

Cabinet refacing gives homeowners the option of dramatically changing the look of their kitchens or bathrooms at a fraction of the cost. You can replace your worn cabinet doors and drawer fronts with new ones. Then, a contractor will install a matching veneer on the side panels and other exposed areas of the cabinets. This specialized home upgrade is great for homeowners looking for a refresh without the cost of a full cabinet replacement. It’s important to note that refacing isn’t always an option, and it depends on the condition of the existing cabinets. It’s not uncommon for older cabinets to be in better condition than newer ones due to their construction.

Creative solutions for cabinet refinishing

One of the most difficult things about replacing part of your kitchen cabinets is colour matching the old ones. It’s not as easy as putting the same colour on your new cabinets as the old paint has faded and settled over time. If your existing cabinets are in direct sunlight, this can have an even bigger effect on the colour.

Tormynak Contracting can work to achieve an exact match for your new cabinets. However, depending on the situation, an exact match might not be possible and other options might need to be explored. The best place to start is with a consultation. Tormynak Contracting can help you refinish your cabinets to look modern and like new again.

Cabinets in Calgary

When it comes to cabinet requirements, Tormynak Contracting works directly with restoration companies and renovators. They have experience working with insurance companies on restoration projects. You might not need a complete renovation or replacement if your cabinets are damaged. Rebuilding or replacing damaged pieces to match existing cabinetry can be an option for homeowners. They offer stock cabinets, semi-custom cabinets, and cabinet restoration services.

Save time and money by calling Tormynak Contracting today.

The Importance of Gutter Cleaning and Maintenance

Keeping your gutters and downspouts clean and in good working order is essential to good exterior home maintenance. The Gutter Doctor in Calgary shares some reasons as to why it’s important to clean and maintain your home’s eavestrough system.

Water damage

Throughout the summer and fall, debris can build up in your gutters and cause clogs in the system. When this happens, rain water has nowhere to go, and no longer drains properly. It will likely pour over the side of your house and start to pool around your foundation. Eventually, water can start to seep into the foundation, basement window wells, and cause water damage.

Clogged gutters can also cause serious issues when ice and snow start to melt off your roof. If the water cannot drain off the roof, it can start to leak under the roofing and into the roof decking. Not only will this damage your roof decking, but in severe cases, it can even cause damage to the attic components and your ceiling. This may appear in the form of leaks, yellow or brown spots on the ceiling. Water in the roof can also lead to mildew and mould.

Avoid these problems by investing in gutter maintenance in Calgary. Having the gutter cleaned at the end of the season will prevent water damage, and keep your home safe.

A broken system

When debris and water spend too much time in the eavestrough, it can cause damage to the eavestrough itself. It may begin to sprout holes, sag off the side of your roof, or fall apart. The eavestrough material becomes compromised from poor conditions. When your gutter breaks, you’ll have to get a new one right away to ensure the water is properly directed and drained around your home’s exterior.

Keeping it clean will make sure you won’t have to replace it and will save you money in the end. However, if you do need new eavestroughs in Calgary, The Gutter Doctor can help. They will install a new eavestrough system on your home and ensure your roof’s drainage system is working properly.

Unwanted pests

Leaves and branches can often get caught in your eavestrough, making the perfect home for unwanted visitors. This includes squirrels, rodents, birds, and insects. Not only will removing pests cost money, but you’ll have to repair any damage they make to your roof and home. Ensuring that your eavestrough is free of debris will keep these pests away. The Gutter Doctor specializes in gutter cleaning in Calgary. Once they clean your gutters, the system will remain functional, and be less attractive to pests that can potentially cause damage to your home.

Entryway Makeover

Professional Tips for an Entryway Makeover

We all know the familiar image. You come home from work and kick off your shoes in the entryway. Next, the kids come home and drop their bags and coats on the floor. Day in and out, the entryway into your home that is supposed to be easy to come in and out of, becomes a cluttered place. It’s important to keep the floor of this area clear to avoid tripping hazards. No one wants to see a mess as soon as they step into their home either. Let’s solve this problem with an entryway makeover.

The Floor

As a rule, it’s important to keep everything up off the floor. Items on the floor, even shoes, can cause tripping hazards, falls, and more. As you start to rethink your space, make the rule that your floor must stay clear at all times. While this sounds a little impossible now, we have some great tips for you to make this a possibility.

The Walls

Get everything off the floor and hung up nicely. This can be achieved a few different ways. Small hooks or racks can be a great place to hang up your car keys, bags, purses, and jackets, as needed. Installing shelves with hooks, or normal shelves will give you more space to set things down instead of dropping everything on the floor.

Storage

Install a custom cabinet! Custom cabinetry is a great way to unlock the potential in any room. This can be a closet to hang your jackets, book bags, and store your shoes. If you want something more accessible and maybe not behind closed doors, create a custom shelving unit that is open to easily grab what you need as you head out or into the home.

Invest in a shoe rack, hang up your keys, and make a home for your jackets. These tips will help you organize your entry way and give it a complete makeover. Start planning your home improvement right away.

It’s not finished until it’s done right

Written by EcoRenew Contracting Ltd. in Edmonton

As a general contractor in Edmonton, as in life, mistakes are never mistakes… so long as you learn from them.

Prior to establishing EcoRenew Contracting, as a general contractor’s assistant and during my own home renovations, I had very high standards for quality that would last. This is because I truly believe when one does something, it’s always better to do it right the first time. As Mike Holmes would say “Make It Right”.

Flooring installation re-done

Recently, I “held my feet to the fire” as it were; just after an Edmonton home renovation that involved a flooring installation for a full laundry room renovation. We decided we would remove the flooring that we had just laid – including pulling back the washer, dryer, and newly installed vanity. There was nothing wrong with our installation. However, the issue was that we were laying a vinyl plank tongue and groove flooring system over a concrete floor with a substantial slope towards the drain.

If the grade/plane of the floor is not relatively even throughout, there is a possibility of the flooring releasing from the “click”, with use over time, as the system is not evenly supported. I had already, or so I thought, taken this into account and extended the drain up. Doing so smoothed out some (but not all) of the grade. However, once the floor was installed, a noticeable softness or squishiness in the floor was still evident just around the drain area.

Always do it right

Rather than letting it be, hiding it from the clients and hoping for the best, I informed them immediately that we would be removing the floor and reinstalling it. Initially, they were apprehensive. I assured them that there would be no additional cost associated, and talked through what measures I would be taking to alleviate the issue. Then I explained to them the ramifications of an unevenly supported floor. After learning this, they were more than happy to let me rinse and repeat. I say this only to point out that doing it right the first time is not always possible, but you can leave the project ensuring it is finished correctly, and in my opinion, that is doing right.

Getting Ready for Back to School, Cleaning up Virtual Schooling Space

Organize and Improve Your Home Classroom or Repurpose Rooms for Back to School

For many students, virtual schooling is coming to an end with the approach of an in-person school year this fall. Whether that is true for your kids, or you are beginning the year virtually, there are several ways to get ready for back to school in your home.

Virtual Back to School

After the fun of the summer and the time spent relaxing, it’s important to reestablish the purpose of the designated school spaces in your home. If your child studies in their bedroom or has a separate space in the house for online-school meetings, it’s time to make sure it is all about school again. Over the summer, the space might have been used for activities and crafts but its important to clean it up and put away what is not school related in that area to minimize distractions.

You can reflect on the last school year to see how these spaces can be improved too. Do you need shelving to keep supplies on or places to store items not in use? Custom-built shelving can be an ideal solution to this. Maybe installations such as better lighting, sitting by a window, and more can make the space more comfortable as well.

 In-Person Back to School

If your children are going back in person, any spaces in the home that were repurposed to become a study space can be reverted to its old use. Local craftspeople can help if it was projects such as building additional rooms in the garage, in unfinished basements, and more. Remove unwanted walls, get a new coat of paint, and more to bring your rooms back to normal.

In the end, having a study space improved or your home returned to a little bit of normalcy, your children will be ready no matter what to go back to school. With these tips their study spaces can be returned to their original use or can continue to promote quiet and productive workspaces.
