Comparing types of flat roofs

Comparing types of flat roofs

It can be challenging to tell the different types to the untrained eye regarding flat roofs. With significant differences between installation methods and materials used, trust a professional to help you decide which is best for your home or building.

No Water Contracting in Edmonton compares a few of the different types of flat roofs to help their clients choose:

Built-Up roof (BUR)

This type of flat roof is very common and used on many flat buildings. Hot tar and gravel are built up over layers of gravel. In more recent years, this type of roofing has upgraded to more advanced materials used in production, such as fibreglass membranes. This type of roof is popular due to its resistance to punctures and waterproof capabilities. The gravel also acts as a fire retardant which can be beneficial to owners and insurance policies. Out of the different styles of flat roofs, BUR roofing is of the more cost-effective choices.

Rubber Membrane roof

There are different types of rubber membranes to choose from, and one type is ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM). This type of roofing is a lightweight system that makes them popular to install over other existing roofs. A high-speed application process and less labour-intensive installation mean another cost-effective option. Membrane-type roofs are easy to patch when issues arise, which is another popular reason for installation.

Another type of membrane roofing is thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO). This system is three layers of a membrane that have been compounded into one ply. It has enhanced flexibility and weldability and is exceptionally durable against water.

Choosing a type of roof

With these types of roofing, plus other flat roof types, it can be challenging to pick which works best for specific buildings. This is where No Water Contracting comes in. They can help choose which type of roofing best suits your needs and the best choice for your budget and maintenance goals. Roof replacements or a new roof for your construction project is a considerable investment. It’s worth having a conversation with an expert to help pick the right roof for your needs.

Inspect your roof before winter arrives

When the season changes, homeowners put fall maintenance on the to-do list. Checking your home’s exterior for damage, potential leaks, or other issues should be top of that list. Your roof is vital to protecting your home from the wind, rain, snow, and other weather winter brings. Inspecting it before the snow flies is essential.

Silverline Roofing in Edmonton shares three reasons why it’s crucial to inspect your roof before winter.

Roof inspections catch minor repairs before they’re major

Fall is the perfect time of year to have your roof inspected as part of your home’s regular fall maintenance. You want to catch any potential issues before snow covers them up. Things like missing or cracked shingles, damaged flashing, or problems with the eavestrough system need to be fixed. Water finding its way between cracks and getting into the house’s frame, roof decking, or attic can cause significant and expensive damage. If left unchecked, it can cause mildew or mould growth, as well as severe damage to components of your home. A simple inspection and repairs can ensure that doesn’t happen.

Avoid a roof replacement if it’s not needed

Regular maintenance can help a roof to last longer and avoid the bill of a new installation. While most roofs will eventually require a replacement at some point, frequent and preventative roof maintenance can ensure your current roof lasts as long as possible. Maintenance is a more cost-effective option for homeowners than replacement, so invest in your roof and have annual inspections done.

If needed, get your roof replaced before winter

If a roof inspection reveals that you need a new roof, you should have it done as soon as possible. While roof replacements in the winter are possible, you want to maximize protection for your home now. Plus, working in the cold is more time-consuming and harder on materials, which can increase the cost of your replacement. Speak with Silverline Roofing today. They’ll come out and provide a thorough inspection of your shingles and roofing system. From there, they can make recommendations for repairs or a replacement if necessary.

If it’s time for a replacement, it is a worthy investment. You’ll ensure the protection of your home this winter, improve efficiency, and avoid costly damage to other areas of the house that a faulty roof can cause.

Choosing cedar vs composite decks

One of the most important parts of building a deck is making sure you choose the right material. A deck will add significant value and last for years, so you want to make sure you love it. While natural wood decks, like cedar, might be the traditional choice, you can’t rule out the benefits of composite wood either. So then, how do you choose?

Raw Contracting in Calgary is an experienced deck builder that offers landscaping services too. They share the differences between cedar and composite so you can choose which is right for your new deck:

Composite decks

The biggest benefit of a composite deck is its durability and long lifespan. Composite itself is composed of recycled plastics mixed with wood chips. The result is a material that looks just like real wood but without any of the main downsides. Composite never needs to be stained or treated and won’t fade, warp, or crack. It can, however, be stained to change its appearance for aesthetic reasons. The average lifespan is also much longer than natural wood as it easily lasts upwards of 50 years.

However, the price of a composite deck can easily cost twice as much as wood. The added cost of a professional installation is another cost to factor in with a composite deck. Overall, the right budget is a major factor, but keep in mind that it will also pay for itself within a few years. Without future maintenance or repair costs, that initial investment will be the only cost.

Cedar decks

For a natural wood deck, cedar is one of the most popular species to choose from. Among natural wood species, it offers the best longevity and value. Cedar is naturally incredibly durable, even against rot, decay, and insects. Despite being wood, it is also resistant to moisture absorption, so there is little risk of warps or cracks. Visually as well, cedar is highly attractive and will vary in colour depending on the species. For example, western red cedar is the most used wood species and ranges in colour from a light red to a rich, dark brown. Given the right care and proper installation, a cedar deck can last between 15-20 years.

Like any natural wood, cedar does need regular maintenance and more care. It must be stained and resealed every few years to protect the wood. If left unsealed, cedar eventually fades to a silvery grey. Cedar is also a softer wood, so while comfortable on bare feet, it is more easily damaged from scratches caused by deck furniture and barbeques.

Which is right?

Both types of decks are excellent choices that will benefit any home and boost overall value. According to Remodeling Magazines’ cost vs value 2021 report, a wood deck addition will recoup 65.8% of the cost. A composite deck addition will recoup 63% of the cost. To decide between one or the other, look at your lifestyle and preferences.

If you love the touch and smell of natural wood and don’t mind the maintenance, choose cedar. It is less expensive than composite, and nothing beats the timeless beauty of natural wood. However, if you want a long-lasting and low-maintenance deck, then composite is the best choice. Budget and costs will also play a deciding role, as composite does cost more to install. In the long run, though, that cost will pay itself and make a great investment.

Raw Contracting can help you enhance your outdoor living spaces. They are experienced and skilled deck builders and can create a custom plan for your deck addition that best suits your needs. They also offer landscaping services including landscape installation, artificial grass, and paving services. How to draughtproof your home

Chilly draughts can quickly become a problem during the cold months if not dealt with. Whether you have a draughty window or more inconspicuous gaps in your home that let warm air out and cold air in, you should start thinking about sealing these as soon as possible.

If you don’t have time to draughtproof your home or would prefer to leave this job to the professionals, today is your lucky day! At the Handy Squad, our London handymen offer professional draught proofing and many other odd jobs. Contact us today on 0800-0 12 12 12 or book online.

What is draughtproofing?

Draughtproofing is the method of finding and sealing draughts. Draughts are “a current of air that comes into a place in an undesirable way.” as explained by Collins Dictionary. If you’ve ever been at home watching a film and felt a chilly breeze – no, it wasn’t a ghost – it was most likely a draught.

These unwanted gaps are uncontrolled. By having air openings in your home, cold air comes in and warm air is let out and wasted. By sealing these gaps, your home will be more comfortable, cosy and energy-efficient.

What are the benefits of draughtproofing?

    • Keeps your home warm and cosy
    • Saves money on energy bills
    • Uses less energy to heat your home
    • Helps reduce damp and condensation
    • Makes your home energy efficient

How to check for draughts?

The best way to check for draughts is by touch. Walk around your home and feel the sides of your doors, windows and other openings if you can feel chilly breezes coming from the outside. If you can, you’ve found a draught! Unwanted and uncovered gaps can be found in other areas, such as keyholes, cat flaps, letterboxes, floorboards, chimneys, skirting boards and much more.

How to draughtproof doors.

Your front door might be letting a lot of heat escape from a variety of areas – keyhole, letterbox and gaps around the edges and bottom. So, it’s important to consider draughtproofing all of these areas.

Keyhole – to make sure there are no chilly draughts coming in from the gap on your keyhole, purchase a keyhole cover. It will be very easy to install.

Letterbox – similarly to keyhole covers, letterboxes also can be sealed with letterbox covers, letterbox flaps or brushes. Keep in mind to purchase the right size letterbox flap for your letterbox.

Bottom gap – you can fit a brush strip at the bottom of your door or simply purchase a draught excluder (which come in a variety of styles and colours to match your décor!) that you can replace whenever you want.

Side gaps – to seal the side gaps of your front door, you can do the same as you did with your standard windows, to fit foam strip around the edges.

How to draughtproof windows.

Depending on the type of windows you have, there are various ways of sealing draughts.

For sliding sash windows, metal or plastic brush strips are recommended. You might choose to fit brush strips yourself or contact a professional to take care of it. Maybe your sash windows are quite outdated and highly draughty, it’s time to replace them. Our London carpenters can fix sash windows and replace sash windows.

For other windows, you can purchase draughtproofing strips that will stick around the window frame and block out any gaps. These are easy to install, so you can draughtproof your windows in an afternoon. If you have gaps on windows that don’t open, consider using silicone sealant instead.

Again, if you need any help draughtproofing your home, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team. We are happy and ready to help. Book online today or give our team a call on 0800-0 12 12 12 and let us know how we can help.

How to change lightbulbs

Depending on the type of lightbulbs you are trying to change, replacing an old lightbulb might prove to be more challenging than you thought. Whether you have never changed a lightbulb before or are trying to replace a hard-to-reach lightbulb, we are here to help. We’ve put together a simple guide on how to change a variety of lightbulbs. Do you want to hire someone to change light bulbs instead of doing it yourself? The team at the Handy Squad will be right there.

Safety precautions.

Before you start unscrewing your lightbulb, there are a few safety precautions to keep in mind.

1. Turn off the power. Never do any electrical work with the electricity on.

2. Make sure the lightbulb is cool. Incandescent lightbulbs can reach high temperatures, so allow them to cool down before changing them.

3. Use a step ladder when changing hard-to-reach lightbulbs.

How to change a basic light bulb.

After turning off the power, you can start changing your lightbulb. A basic lightbulb includes any lightbulb that is easy to reach, including lamp lightbulbs. There are two main types of basic bulbs: screw fitting and bayonet. Screw fitting bulbs, as the name says, have a screw-type fitting. Bayonet mount bulbs, as Real Homes explains, have “two prongs fit into a matching fixture”.

– Screw fitting lightbulbs.

Step 1. Gently grab the lightbulb and turn it counterclockwise. It should come loose from the socket and you can easily remove it. Follow step 2 below.

– Bayonet mount lightbulbs.

Step 1. Hold the bulb firmly and gently push upwards while turning it counterclockwise until it comes out of the socket.

Step 2. Once your lightbulb has been removed, get the replacement lightbulb. Firmly push the bulb into the socket, and turn it clockwise until it locks into place.

How to change a recessed lightbulb.

Recessed lightbulbs usually have a trim cover around them to give the ceiling lights a perfect finish. Some trim covers need to be fully removed to replace the lightbulb. Others have a pin inside which needs to be pinched, removed and then allow you to unscrew the lightbulb. Check the type of trim cover your recessed lightbulbs have before trying to fiddle with them.

Once you have access to your lightbulb, unscrew it counterclockwise until it comes out of the socket. Push your replacement bulb into the socket and turn it clockwise until it locks into place.

For lightbulbs in hard-to-reach places, such as high ceilings, pick up a bulb changer pole from a local hardware store.

How to change a broken lightbulb.

To change a broken lightbulb, you need a few more safety measures on top of the ones already mentioned. This includes safety equipment, such as work gloves and safety glasses. You will also need needle-nose pliers.

Step 1. Insert the pliers into the rim of the lightbulb and spread the handlers apart. The ends of your pliers should be pushing against the inside of the lightbulb.

Step 2. Turn the pliers counterclockwise to unscrew the lightbulb.

Step 3. Dispose of the broken lightbulb safely, and then get your replacement bulb.

Step 4. Gently but firmly insert it into the socket and turn it clockwise.

How to dispose of used lightbulbs.

Halogen bulbs and incandescent bulbs can be disposed of with your general rubbish as they do not contain any hazardous materials. If your lightbulbs are broken, wrap them up before placing them in the bin.

If you prefer to hire someone else to change your lightbulbs, our electricians in London are happy and ready to help. Our professional tradesmen can complete (almost!) any job you throw at them, so whether you need help replacing a hard-to-reach lightbulb or want a professional to replace a light fixture, we will be able to help. Book our London electricians today by filling our online booking form or give us a call on 0800-0-12-12-12.

If this is daunting and you want to choose to do it yourself (DIY) on a home improvement project, let’s see why you might want to still hire over completing a DIY project.

What is DIY?

DIY is when you complete a project on your own, with your own resources. For many reasons, this is an attractive option because you have complete control over your project. You can decide how, when, and at what cost your project is completed. But what happens if you are unsure how to complete something or a mistake is made?

Why You Should Hire Professional Craftspeople

The first step to finding the right professionals for you is to go online and search for a local company. Read reviews and compare websites. You will want to pick a few different reputable companies and plan to meet them for an estimate. An estimate is where you can get a quote on the services available and how much the project will cost. Compare quotes and pick the craftspeople who are more than happy to help you.
