How to repair sash windows

How to repair sash windows

Are your sash windows not staying up? Have you painted your sash windows and now your windows are stuck? Perhaps the cords on your sash windows are broken? These are some of the problems you might be experiencing with your sash windows. Today, to help you repair your sash windows, we will share some of the common issues with sash windows and how to fix them (or how to avoid them!).

1. Broken sash cords.

Over time, sash cords can become fragile due to wear and tear, which can lead to sash cords breaking or snapping. If this happens, you will need to replace the cords on your sash windows. You might choose to follow a guide our team has written in the past on how to replace a sash cord, or if you don’t feel confident undertaking this task, contact our London carpenters who will be able to replace the sash cords in a timely manner.

2. Sash windows not staying up.

If your sash windows are not staying up, there might be a few things happening:

  • Sash weights are not balanced properly.
  • Wrong size weights.
  • Faulty component.
  • Components fell out of alignment.

If the sash window is heavier than the weights, it won’t stay open. If any of the window components have fallen out of alignment, it can lead to problems operating the window. So, it’s essential to inspect the sash window to figure out the problem and then assess the best way to deal with the issue. If there is a faulty component, it should be replaced.

3. Sash windows are stuck after painting.

So, you’ve painted over your sash window and now the window is stuck… it happens. You can easily unstick your window with a utility knife. Slide a utility knife along the edge of the window to gently break the paint seal. Then, gently loosen the window. Try raising the window – if it works, you’ve successfully opened a painted shut window.

Has your kid been playing football inside and kicked the door by mistake? Has someone shut the door strongly and now it’s not closing properly? If you need to replace your door, it is essential that you choose the right door to fit into the door frame. To do this, measure the width, height and thickness of the existing door and then choose a door that matches your measurements. Can doors be hung upside down?

Yes, doors can be accidentally hung upside down. For instance, if you are installing a four or six panelled door, it often has a taller horizontal style across the bottom of the door than it has on the top. Be sure to check the right way up before you install your door.

Which way should doors be hung?

There is no right or wrong way to install a door. There are preferable ways of hanging doors. As this article on Hunker explains, “The rule of thumb is to hang interior doors to open into the room, not out into a hallway or other common area”. This is done to prevent blocking hallways or other common areas.

Materials:

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Wood Plane
  • Hand Saw
  • Chisel
  • Hammer
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Wooden wedges
  • Hinges
  • Screws

How to:

Step 1. Measure and cut the new door to size. Lay the old door on top of the new door and mark any excess you will need to adjust on the new door. Hold the door in place using a workbench and cut the door to the required length with a saw. Test to see if fits the door frame.

Step 2. Get the door ready for the hinges. Hold the door up in the frame and mark the position of the existing hinge cutouts. Measure the thickness of the hinges and mark the depth with a pencil. Chisel the required area to create the hinge recess. Make several cuts and chisel in the same direction as the grain. Place the hinges in place and drill pilot holes.

Step 3. Hang the door on the frame. Place the door at 90° to the frame and place the wedges under the door. Fix one screw into the bottom hole of each hinge. Test the opening and closing of the door. Then, fasten the rest of the screws. Test the door one last time, and that’s it!

How to prepare for home renovations

Home renovations can be an exciting venture and an incredibly stressful one if not planned and executed properly. Therefore, creating a plan, budget and communicating clear expectations to your general contractor is paramount to a positive process and results.

Richmond Construction in Calgary is available to help homeowners prepare for a successful renovation. Here are some tips:

Hire an expert

When it comes to home renovations, you must hire the right company for the job. Hire an experienced, licensed, insured contractor and has a good reputation in the industry and community. A reputable, skilled contractor will ensure everything is done to code and done right.

Renovations that were not done correctly or to code can impact resale value. In extreme cases, faulty or DIY renovations can cause safety hazards. Hiring a certified contractor will avoid these issues and ensure your vision for your new renovation is realized.

Start with a plan

The first step to a home renovation is knowing what you want to improve or create. Certain things might be more important to you than others, so knowing priorities before beginning is helpful. Save time and money by making as many decisions as you can before the construction process starts.

An experienced general contractor like Richmond Construction can help you create a design plan that meets your needs and budget. Your plan should include the overall scope of work, including materials and finishing products and anything else involved in the renovation. Once the design and plan are to your satisfaction and approved, then the work begins!

Keep communication flowing

Your home is your personal space, so it’s essential for you to feel comfortable and happy in it. You don’t want to invest in a renovation that isn’t exactly what you want. When preparing for renovations, you need to be clear in your expectations so your contractor can help create a plan that meets and exceeds them.

A good contractor will ensure open communication throughout the entire process. They’ll listen to your wants and needs, address your concerns, and ensure the process runs smoothly with the best results. Don’t be nervous to ask lots of questions. How to design a small deck with big value

Decks are a great outdoor addition that adds extra space, value and boost overall lifestyle quality. Most decks focus on a larger and more spacious design, but not all yards are so accommodating. If you have a small yard, designing a small deck with the right features can optimize and improve your space for outdoor living.

Shipley Construction in Edmonton is a professional general contractor that offers interior and exterior renovations. They share some design tips for building a small deck with big value:

Start with your needs

Like any deck design, start by thinking of what goals you have for your new deck. For example, is it a space to soak up some sun, entertain friends, or just eat outdoors now and again? If you like to entertain, you’ll want to plan a nook for that BBQ or grill without cramping any seating. Or focus on a layout that maximizes a cozy, intimate space for relaxation and comfort for a quiet reading spot. By starting with your wants and goals, you’ll be able to work with your contractor to create a design plan that meets them.

Make the design in sync

An essential part of good deck design is ensuring that the house, deck, and yard all look in sync. The best way to ensure that is by using similar materials or layouts when designing the addition. Focus on complementary paint colours or use the same dark work as your home to build the deck. That way, the two spaces will feel connected, have good flow, and not like two disjointed areas. Another tip is to build the deck where an opening is already available, like a back door or connection from the kitchen. Not only does it save extra construction costs, but you benefit from that sense of flow from the interior to the exterior living spaces.

Reduce visual clutter

Larger decks have more room for extra additions like privacy screens with plants, a set seating area, a snazzy grill and so on. With a small deck, you don’t have much room for such visual freedom. Too many additions and features will make the space feel cramped and cluttered. Instead, focus on what additions make the most sense or will have the most use. Add an arbour, for example, if you want a cozy setting, liven up your deck or incorporate some greenery. Or, you could create bar-like seating with a narrow table running along with one of the railings. Only add as much furniture as you will actually use or need for your family’s size.

General Contractors in Edmonton

Shipley Construction provides high-quality and stunning transformative renovations for both interior and exterior projects. Their team is fully trained, insured, and experienced in handling any project, big or small. Whether you’re upgrading the kitchen or putting in a new deck, you can trust the quality work and service provided by their skilled team.

How to mount a TV on the wall

If you’re thinking of mounting your TV to the wall, you may have a lot of questions. One of which may be “should I be doing this by myself?”. While some may be able to mount a TV with no problem, there is no shame in hiring a helping hand. After all, the cost of a handyman is going to be way less than the cost of a new TV if you drop it. If you do decide to go ahead, we have tried to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about mounting a TV to the wall. Alternatively, fill our online booking form and get a handyman to hang your TV on the wall.

How do you install a TV bracket?

To install a TV bracket, start by placing the bracket in position and use a spirit level to ensure it is not wonky. Mark the bracket’s screw holes with a pencil then put it down and use a wire detector to check the wires behind the wall. If there are no wires, you may proceed to drill where the four screws will go. Close the bracket back on the wall and drill in place.

What bracket do I need for my TV?

There are many types of brackets for TVs, including fixed TV wall mount brackets, tilting wall mount brackets and motion wall mount brackets. bracket types depend on your personal preference, however, bracket size is very important and depends on the size of your TV. Make sure your TV is within the weight limit of the bracket that you choose.

Should I get a handyman to put my TV on the wall?

Why not? That’s the real question. Do you have enough free time to do it yourself? Do you know how to mount your TV? If you answered “no” to both questions, get a handyman to install your TV.

If you’re looking for a London handyman to help you mount a TV on your wall, the Handy Squad can help. They have a team of expert handymen, who are always on call to help with any DIY at home improvement tasks in and around London.

How to mount a TV on a brick wall without studs?

If you want to mount a TV to a brick wall without drilling, you will need to use strong adhesives or a stand to allow you to mount your TV on, instead of the wall. Clip-on adhesives are a good choice, as are toggle anchors or toggle bolts.

Can I mount a TV by myself?

Mounting a TV can be quite tricky, especially if you’re doing it on your own. It is recommended that you enlist the help of a friend or a professional handyman, to ensure you do not damage your wall or the TV.

How do you mount tv on plaster wall?

To mount your TV on a plaster wall you may need to use weight rated anchors to fasten the TV to the wall. These ensure that the TV does not fall off the wall. You should also use a level to make sure that your TV is not wonky. If you do not feel comfortable fixing your TV by yourself, you should enlist the help of a professional.

Can you mount a TV on any wall?

You can mount a TV on almost any wall, but you need to be careful with stud walls, as they are very thin. You should line your bracket up with the wooden studs in your stud wall. To do this, you can use a stud finder.

What do I do if I can’t mount my TV on the wall?

If you’re unable to mount your TV to the wall due to a lack of skill, consider hiring a handyman to help with the task. If this is not an option, you may have to resort to buying a TV stand.

What are the benefits of mounting your TV to the wall?

Our handymen can also complete decorating and painting tasks, such as fixing cracks in walls, painting rooms and hanging up wallpaper.

Some of our handymen can also complete minor electrical, carpentry and plumbing work. This includes replacing lightbulbs, changing light fixtures, assembling kitchen units, unblocking sinks, and much more.

Can a handyman do electrical work?

Yes, handymen can help with electrical work, as long as they have an electrical licence. Some unqualified handymen can carry out basic electrical work, but it is recommended that you opt for a qualified electrician for most jobs.

As Which? explains, “When you carry out changes to the electrical installation (wiring, fuse box and electrical circuits) in your home, this work needs to comply with building regulations, known as Part P. The building regulations are there to ensure that properties are built or altered to a safe standard.”

Can a handyman do plumbing?

Yes, handymen can legally help with basic plumbing tasks, such as unblocking toilets and repairing leaky taps. However, for tasks such as installing a gas boiler, make sure you opt for a qualified plumber, with certification and experience. The same goes for the installation of mains pressurised hot water. A lot of damage can be done if someone without the required knowledge or skills tries to complete such a task.

Can a handyman do flooring?

Yes, handymen are able to fit and repair flooring. Some of the types of flooring they can fit include wood flooring; engineered wood flooring; laminate flooring; vinyl flooring; PVC flooring; solid wood flooring; dark wood flooring and birch flooring.

Hiring a handyman is the best way to ensure that your task is completed quickly, efficiently and to the highest standard. 3 functional and valuable basement renovation ideas

A basement renovation can almost double your home’s usable living space. Customizing that space to meet your needs can improve your home’s function while adding value to your property.

Durango Developments is a custom home builder in Calgary that offers home renovations, including basement renovations. They share some basement renovation ideas that will add function and value to your home.

Home office

Many of us started working from home when the pandemic hit, and for some, working at home has become permanent. Creating a dedicated workspace in your basement will improve comfort and productivity. For your home office, make sure you have adequate lighting. That includes ambient lighting and focused task lighting in your workspace.

Incorporate additional outlets in your basement renovation instead of using extension cords and power bars to power your computers and devices. Home renovation companies in Calgary can also give tips for improved internet connectivity, so you don’t have to worry about being close enough to the household router.

Basements can also feel chilly. Ensure that the ductwork leading to your office space is producing adequate heat. Depending on the age of your home and its current HVAC system, it might mean retrofitting additional ducts and installing a register. You don’t want to catch a chill when you’re trying to get your work done.

Home theatre

There’s a time for work and a time for play! Because it’s typically the darkest area of the house, the basement is a perfect space for a home entertainment centre. Installing a home theatre, complete with a large screen and surround sound, will make family movie nights a blast. If you’re developing an unfinished basement, that’s the perfect opportunity to run wiring for your home theatre and sound system. Then, finish the space with comfortable seating, suitable décor, and treat yourself to a popcorn machine to make it official. Check out these home theatre designs and ideas.

Additional bedrooms and a bathroom

If you don’t have anything specific planned for your basement renovation, consider adding a bedroom or two and a spare bathroom. Extra bedrooms downstairs provide flexible spaces that can change as your needs change. They can serve as bedrooms for a growing family, guest rooms, hobby rooms, playrooms, or space for older kids to hang out. The benefit of having these extra bedrooms is that they will be appealing to buyers in the future.

The same goes for having home builders in Calgary add an extra bathroom. Not only will it come in handy for your family, but additional bathrooms add resale value. Even a bathroom with a stand-up shower, or even just a half-bath, will have a good return on investment when it comes time to sell.

Storage solutions for every room in the house

Custom storage solutions are necessary for more than just bedroom closets; they are beneficial for all rooms. Having storage solutions in all parts of your home will keep everything organized and attractive. You’ll never have to worry about finding items again or facing a messy and disorganized home.

Kitchen storage

Extra storage and custom solutions in the kitchen will do a world of wonder for a clean, organized space. It’ll also help with maximizing all available space in the kitchen, like deep or high cabinets. Tall panel-style cabinet doors are a great way to keep a streamlined appearance in your kitchen. They can be used to hide the pantry or even the refrigerator. Using narrow and deep slide-out drawers is a clever way to store garbage bins, cleaning products, or pots and pans. You can easily access them and keep everything contained with closet organizers

Laundry room storage

Laundry rooms and mudrooms are both spacious that can be maximized with proper storage and custom solutions. In the laundry room, think about storage for washing, drying, ironing, and folding. That way, you can create work zones with tailored storage that makes the work a breeze. Wall-mounted dryer racks will keep the floor space open, while narrow drawers can be used to store linen and towers. Open shelving is a great way to store towels or stack laundry baskets.

Mudroom storage

In the mudroom, focus on racks to store shoes, hooks at various heights for jackets or winter clothing. If you have a family, your mudroom should be similar to a kid’s closets setup, so they can easily reach hooks and shelvings.

Another clever and visually appealing design is to mix cubbies with closed cabinets. It’ll help keep the room looking clutter-free while offering a range of ways to store items. A mudroom bench is another two-in-one storage function that is stylish and subtle. The bench lid lifts to reveal an open space or cubbies where shoes, umbrellas or other mudroom clothing can be kept.

Bathroom storage

Big or small, any bathroom will benefit from a few custom closets in Calgary storage solutions and organizations. The great thing about bathrooms is that you can use the same storage from the kitchen or mudroom. Slide-out drawers and narrow shelves can store towels or shampoo without taking up countertop space. A Lazy Susan will make reaching cleaning products and supplies easy and won’t take up excess room. Install mounted rods and hooks in the shower to store shower supplies or small caddies. If your bathroom has the space, then a mudroom bench will add a spa-like feel with comfy seating, as well as hidden storage for bulkier items.

Garage storage

Whether you use the garage as a workshop or just for storage, order and organization are just as important. Mounted hooks on the walls can easily mount bikes to keep the floor space open. Cabinets with various sized drawers and sectionals are a perfect space to conveniently storing tools or garden supplies. Keeping supplies off the floor will also help protect against moisture damage and make the garage safer and easier to clean and keep tidy.

How much does it cost for custom closets in Calgary?

When it comes to custom closets, there are many different designs and styles available to choose from. You can choose a fully custom design or a standard closet and add a few custom bells and whistles. The investment into a custom closet is always worthwhile, but it’s important to know the costs so that you can budget.

Standard closet cost

A standard closet with Calgary Custom Closets is around 5 ½ feet and two feet deep, making it an ideal choice for kids or guest bedrooms. With a standard, you can choose between a wall-hung or one with baskets or drawers ideal for storing toys or clever laundry storage. The basic wall hung unit costs $707, a unit with baskets costs $876, and a floor height unit with drawers costs $1,480. Installation is included in all of the costs for the custom closets in Calgary

Standard walk-in closet

A walk-in closet is a go-to choice for any spacious master bedroom or as a spouse closet setup. A standard closet can be customized with different styles and looks to change the overall function. At the starting cost, the walk-in closet costs $1,587. However, it can go up in price depending on size and designs as well as the material used.

A second walk-in design blends more drawers for clothes or shoes or even smaller ones for accessories. Tilt outs can also be included for out of sight and convenient laundry storage. Depending on the walk-in style with extra drawers and bins, the price can start at $3,718 and go up according to design, materials used in installation, etc.

Closet accessories

Part of turning a closet into a custom one means adding closet organizers and hardware that suit your needs. Acrylic shelf dividers create invisible divisions between stacks of clothes for a seamless look. A clever duel valet rod and tie rack provide twice the storage efficiency and a cleaner storage appearance. Pull out racks like ones for accessories or hanging shirts means you can maximize deep closets with ease. There are many ways to decorate the interior of a closet, so focus on the features that suit your needs best. Closet finishes

How your custom closet looks on the outside is just as important as its overall function. Balancing open storage with closet doors and drawers and the right hardware and colour will boost the appeal. In a master bedroom especially, a visually and functionally appealing closet adds a great deal of value. For a sleek, modern look, choose shades of whites, light greys or ash browns. Darker woods or tones lend a more dramatic style that will pair well with brighter hardware. There are also different frame styles like shaker and raised panel door and drawer fronts. With so many ways to customize and finish your closets Calgary, it’s worth working with a professional. They can help with the budgets, look, and design to ensure you get a perfect custom closet.

Tips for creating an in-law basement suite

A legal secondary suite will increase the value of your home and provide a cost-effective solution for multigenerational living. Families who want to live together can do so while still maintaining independence and privacy.

The key to creating a comfortable dwelling downstairs is to make it feel less like a basement. As an experienced home renovation company in Calgary, Durango Developments shares some tips for creating the perfect in-law basement suite:

Deal with moisture problems first

Whether you’re building a home, developing an unfinished basement, or renovating the basement you have, always check for moisture issues before starting the remodel. Calgary renovation companies can inspect the foundation, windows, plumbing for potential problems before the walls are covered up. You should also ensure that your yard is properly graded, so drainage issues do not become a problem in the future. The last thing you want is for water to damage your new suite and investment.

Be mindful of lighting

Bringing in as much natural light as possible will help lighten and open the space. Consider digging deeper window wells and install new, larger windows. If possible, consider adding a window or two if there are particularly dark areas in the suite.

When it comes to electric lighting, make sure your lighting plan includes layered lighting. First, you should have ambient light, typically pot light fixtures, for general lighting in the main living spaces. Then add task lighting, like pendants, under cabinet lighting, or table lamps—finally, accent lighting to create a warm ambiance and highlight any focal points in the room.

Use light colours

Light colours can help make a basement feel open, airy, and brighter. Consider light, neutral tones for the walls. Painting the trim and ceiling a lighter shade, or white, can add contrast and enhance the effect of making the suite feel more open. White and light colours will also reflect the light, which will help brighten things up too. When you hire home builders in Calgary, they can advise on the best options for flooring, countertops, tile, and more.

Install egress windows

An egress window is a window you can use as an emergency escape route in the case of a fire or other emergency. Egress windows in sleeping spaces will ensure your suite is compliant with the building code. Plus, your suite will need egress windows to be considered a legal suite. The window must be accessible, open without anything blocking it, and large enough for a person to climb through. Check out the City of Calgary’s Egress Window Guidelines for more information.

Add ventilation

Proper ventilation will ensure good airflow, reduce moisture issues, and keep the air clean. Natural ventilation, through open windows, allows fresh air to flow through the space. However, for those looking for solutions during the winter, mechanical ventilation can help. Installing exhaust fans that vent outside, especially in the kitchen and bathroom, is key to circulating air with high moisture content out of the suite.
