When’s the right time to upgrade your plumbing

When’s the right time to upgrade your plumbing

A great time to upgrade your plumbing is during a home renovation. Chances are walls could be open, making the plumbing easier to access. Plus, sometimes it’s easier to handle all your home upgrades in one large project. It’s never comfortable to live in an ongoing work zone, so consider upgrading your system at the opportune time.

Oceanside Mechanical in Vancouver is more than qualified to know when your plumbing needs upgrading. Here are some simple ways to tell if your plumbing needs a closer look.

Pay attention to wet spots

It can be easy to spot signs that your plumbing is failing. Wet spots on baseboards, or in corners by sinks or the dishwasher can be easy to notice. Water stains in less noticeable spots or warped flooring might be less easy to spot. These are signs that water leaking from your plumbing. Have it inspected as it will likely need to be repaired or replaced entirely.

Listen to your pipes

A clogged drain or a leak can be a nasty surprise if you aren’t paying attention. One way to avoid this is by actually listening to your pipes when using them. If you hear a noise like a gurgle, this could be a sign that air is getting trapped in a blockage. If your pipes are leaking, you may be able to hear a telltale dripping noise as well. Sometimes when something is wrong with the plumbing, you might hear a wailing or squealing noise. These sounds might be an early warning that you need to have a closer look done by a professional.

How are your pipes looking

Taking a physical look at your pipes can also let you know if it’s time for an upgrade. If pipes show rust, corrosion, or a general state of wear, it might be a good time to call a plumber for their opinion. Aged fixtures can lead to issues and bigger expenses if things really go wrong. Keep an eye out for faulty fixtures as well because just because something isn’t old doesn’t mean it can’t break.

Preventative maintenance can save you a lot of money in the long run. Taking care of your plumbing system before things break is the smart, cost-efficient way of thinking. Consider upgrading your existing plumbing system if you are already planning on undertaking a home renovation. Planning ahead and investing in preventative repairs or replacements can save you damage and money down the road.

What is a Garden Box and How to Build One

What is a Garden Box and How to Build One with For Your Yard

If you are looking to add a garden to your yard, it is a lot of work when it comes to picking the location, researching what plants you will use and preparing and installing the garden bed. It takes a lot of digging, the removal of sod, and more to prepare a section of ground for a garden. But what if you could skip that and create one more easily?

What is a Garden Box?

A garden box is a raised or elevated garden bed that can keep your plants in a convenient area. Constructed from a simple frame, they can be built at any size, height, and more.

Benefits of a Garden Box

  • A garden box saves you the time of preparing the soil in your backyard for a garden.
  • It is easy to access for upkeep and maintenance.
  • It has a neat appearance—no edging required thanks to the box’s sides.
  • A great way to separate different kinds of plants that spread or need certain kids of care.
  • Better drainage for plants.
  • Less grub damage and less weeds.
How to Build a Garden Box

Clear an area of your yard from all debris. The garden box is a constructed frame that will need to be deep enough to hold the soil for the plants and to provide a border. To build a basic box, you will need 6 boards and scrap wood to create the corner braces and side braces outside the frame. 3-inch screws and a drill are all you need to get the job done.

Once the frame is built, fill it with topsoil, compost, and peat moss depending on your plants’ needs and make sure there is 10 inches of dirt. Do not pack the dirt.

With these tips and exploration on the topic of garden boxes, you will be ready to create one right away. If you are not too handy or don’t have the time to construct one on your own, consider looking into local handyman companies where their craftspeople can lend a helping hand. Either way, enjoy your new garden in no time.

How to paint your walls like a pro

Are your walls cracked, peeling or flaking? Is the paint fading over time, leaving you with a dull, lifeless surface? We know how tempting it can be to just grab a brush and start repainting, but it’s important to be aware of some painting fundamentals, which will save you time and effort in the long run. Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to paint your walls, just like a pro!

Preparation is key

If you’re painting over old paint, start by filling any holes or cracks. Wash the surface of the hole to ensure there aren’t any dust particles or grease, then use a flexible scraper to work wall filler into the hole. Allow the patches to dry, and sand them down with fine sandpaper. Try to ventilate the area while sanding, and make sure to wear a mask.

Next, using a new piece of sandpaper, sand the entire wall, rubbing in a circular motion. The goal is not to remove the paint, but to add texture, giving the new paint a better surface to bind to. You can also use your sandpaper to remove any peeling paint.

To remove grease, dirt and grubby finger marks, wash down the wall with sugar soap, or a mixture of detergent and warm water, and rinse with plain water after. Be sure to wear gloves, as sugar soap is slightly acidic, and can irritate the skin.

Don’t want to get your hands dirty? There’s no shame in calling the experts. The Handy Squad’s team of London decorators can help with the whole process, from filling cracks in walls, to plaster patch repair and painting. Give your local handyman a call on 0800-0-12-12-12 or request a free quote today by filling out our online form.

Protect your surroundings

Once the wall is dry, start covering switches, sockets, and skirting boards with masking tape. Between coats, remove and reapply any masking tape to avoid the adhesive removing any paint.

Try to move as much furniture as you can out of the room, to avoid ruining it with paint, and to give you a larger area to work in. Change into some old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and lay a sheet on the floor to catch any paint droplets.

Painting

Primer is great for helping new paint stick and stand out while cutting down the number of coats you need to use. It’s essential to use if you’re painting a light colour over a darker one, or the new coat may be drowned by the latter.

Start by mixing your paint and primer with a stirrer – do not shake as this could allow dried paint from the lid to fall into the mix.

Dampen a paint roller with a wet rag and place a pan liner in your paint pan for easy cleaning. Pour your primer into the pan and apply the primer in a ‘W’ or ‘M’ motion on your wall with a roller. This ensures an even coat is applied throughout. Use a smaller brush to work the primer into tight cervices and harder to reach areas. Allow around four hours for the primer to dry.

Before you start with your paint, check that you have enough for your wall and then mix it thoroughly. Grab a new paint liner for your paint pan and pour the paint into it.

Use a small brush to start painting around the edges of the wall and around any sockets or switches, which should be covered with masking tape. Don’t overload the brush with paint, and take your time with it, to achieve a professional finish.

Using a paint roller, paint in ‘M’ or ‘W’ motions, making sure not to go too fast or the paint will splatter.

Once the first coat has dried, it is advised that you add at least one additional coat on top of this, for a good finish. When everything has completely dried, remove any masking tape to reveal your finished wall.

As well as professional decorators, the Handy Squad has an expert team of London plumberselectricians and London carpenters who can help with almost any DIY-related and home improvement tasks.

Additionally, we offer help with bigger projects such as kitchen installations and tiling. If you’re seeking professional advice or want to request a free quote today, you can give us a call on 0800-0-12-12-12 or simply fill out the online form.

Renovation Ideas: Transform your property after water damage

Water damages creeping up anywhere in a property can quickly turn into a horrific nightmare for any homeowner. Besides, one of the most prominent reasons for property loss, water damages can creep up very quickly and silently. However, prevention is the best way to deal with this hazard, but brace yourself for a plethora of burdensome expenses if the damage is already done.

Depending on the extent of the damages, a restoration may seem like your most viable choice to make your home habitable. Renovations come with an enormous financial burden, especially if you weren’t planning and saving up.

There are ways to reduce this burden strategically, but DIY is neither strategic nor viable. Homeowners need to understand that they cannot DIY-their-way-out of water damages and restorations all the time. When water is involved, risks are abundant, for instance, the fire hazards if the electrical wiring is exposed. Hence, you require a reliable and practical solution by engaging an expert without wasting a second.

Once you’ve hired a professional, you will have to make some crucial and impactful decisions. Planning a renovation is a time-consuming commitment, and you cannot initiate the project without doing your research. Keep reading to explore some ideas and tips to transform your property and eliminate all signs of water damage.

Prevention First – Water Damage is Avoidable!

Before we dive into the renovation ideas, we want to emphasize the need for prevention. Water damage is easily avoidable if only homeowners keep a close, vigilant eye on maintenance and repair needs. Neglecting leaking faucets, mold and mildew, clogged gutters, wet basement floors, and damp walls allows the problem to aggravate.

We urge you to create a solid prevention regime and equip yourself with practical water damage tips and strategies. All it takes is a few minutes from your busy schedule to shut off the water supply to curb the damages of water leakage. So what are you waiting for? Arm yourself with strategies and tips that work well for your property. Unfortunately, most homeowners understand the need for preventive care after paying an enormous sum to fix the damage.

Invest in Water-Resistant Flooring

Flooring is always vulnerable to maximum damage in cases of water damages, especially flooding. Floors that feature thick carpets aggravate the hazards because they readily absorb enormous amounts of water. What’s more, carpets and rugs take ages to dry, mainly if you don’t air them and leave them to dry in the sunlight.

Floors with carpets are highly prone to water damage, and in turn, also susceptible to mold, mildew, and bacteria growth. Laminate flooring and hardwood aren’t very efficient either, as they tend to soak moisture.

We advise you to invest in water-resistant flooring materials, for instance, treated concrete, rubber, ceramics, vinyl, and porcelain. These are all highly durable and aesthetically-pleasing options, especially ceramics and porcelain. Ceramics come in a delightful myriad of textures, patterns, and colors and can liven up any given space.

If you live in a flood-prone area, we strongly advise you to invest in water-resistant flooring material.

Upgrade the Kitchen

There’s nothing worse than a flood gushing through your home, tearing the structure apart like a vicious monster. In most cases, the kitchen is the most heavily damaged space, which calls for a renovation as an absolute necessity after such catastrophes.

Try not to agonize over the damages and loss, and take this as an opportunity to spruce up and upgrade your kitchen. Take out a home renovation loan and start planning a trendy and aesthetically ambient kitchen space. You can upgrade your appliances and invest in smart kitchen tools to reduce your electricity consumption and expenses.

The cabinets, walls, and countertops are usually the most ravaged kitchen areas as they’re most susceptible to water damages. Consider transforming the floor plan or investing in French country-style cabinets with gold hardware and intricate carvings. Budget-conscious homeowners can opt for a rustic, farmhouse-style appeal with raw wood and earthly colors.

You can transform the countertops by picking out a durable and eclectic marble texture or if granite appeals to your taste. We strongly urge you to invest in a sturdy backsplash and consider giving the walls a fresh coat of paint.

Strengthen the Walls

The walls are the foundational element of the structural integrity and cosmetic appeal of your property. Unfortunately, walls that are unfortified are highly vulnerable to moisture and dampness. If you notice any signs of dampness or water build-up in the walls, call repair professionals immediately.

It’s essential to emphasize the urgency of engaging a team of experts to curb and repair the damage without much delay. Once the damage is contained, it’s time to fortify the walls with strengthening materials and measures.

Cleaning and drying out the drywall, wood stud, and framing is of the utmost significance. We advise homeowners to invest in a water-resistant material, for instance, ceramic tiles and concrete. In recent years, closed-cell insulation has emerged as a popular and practical investment to prevent floods, stains, and even foul odor.

Can you afford to go overboard on the wall protection measures? If yes, then consider investing in marine-grade plywood that has undergone pressure treatment to enjoy a lifetime of durability. In most cases, homeowners have to repair both interior and exterior walls. This endeavor can get complicated, mainly if you live in an area with strict construction codes.

Consider investing in sturdy siding materials that can withstand all exposures to moisture, be it water leakage or a hurricane. If there’s any structure damage, repair it to the core because any vulnerability can lead to eventual property loss.

Basement Renovation

Has your basement suffered mammoth destruction due to flooding? This unfortunate event is an opportunity to spruce up this often neglected and cluttered space on your property. You can renovate your basement into a rental space and jump into the room-sharing market with AirBnB.

You can also renovate the basement into a productive and well-organized home office. Consider dividing the space into multiple rooms to set up an impressive conference room to entertain clients and associates. You can also create a luxurious study with a library on the side and an exquisitely carved wooden desk.

Conclusion

Water damages lead to devastating catastrophes, and watching your home fall apart is traumatic. But you must move forward and find a practical, financially efficient, and aesthetically inclined strategy to renovate your home. We urge you to focus more on structural fortifications and repairs than on the aesthetic appeal and cosmetic upgrades. If your budget allows it, you can transform the aesthetics and repurpose different areas to make them more functional.

When It’s Time to Replace Your Hot Water Heater

Hot water heaters have a lifespan of around ten to fifteen years. While the lifespan is a good indicator of when to replace your hot water heater, there are other tell-tale signs to watch out for. Black Mountain Plumbing and Heating in Calgary shares some of these signs, and what could happen if you wait too long.

You’ve found a leak

A common sign of problems with your hot water heater is a leak. Leaks can come with age. The heat from the water can cause the tank to expand and contract over time, making the machine more prone to denting or cracking.

Sediment build-up within the tank can also cause corrosion over the years. Walk around your hot water heating, and check for any cracks or water damage. If you notice a leak near the top of the hot water heater where the water comes in, it might be fixable. If it’s leaking from the tank, call a plumber for a replacement right away.

There’s no hot water

There are a few reasons why your hot water heater isn’t producing hot water. A leak in the tank or gas line, a failing gas valve, or a malfunctioning thermostat might all be a culprit. If you’ve increased hot water consumption at home, it might be that your tank size needs an upgrade! A lack of function means you need to have the tank inspected, repair, or replaced soon. If the issue is gas-related, you don’t to take any chances by waiting.

The water is coloured

When a hot water heater ages, it may begin to rust. If this happens, it could change the colour of your water, or give it a strange taste. Not only is this not safe to consume, but it’s not healthy for your home’s plumbing system either. A tank that is rusting out on the inside will soon result in leaks. It could even cause a flood if the entire bottom of the tank drops out due to corrosion. Report any discolouration to your plumber, and let them know that it may be time for a new hot water heater

What happens if you wait?

Deciding to wait to replace or repair your hot water heater can lead to major problems in your home. A leak can turn into major water damage. Sometimes, when a hot water tank has reached the end of its life, it can cause a flood in the utility room. This will lead to expensive water damage. Prevent potential damage and make sure your home has the hot water it needs by reviewing your options for a hot water heater replacement as soon as possible!

Upgrade your home with the right paint colours

Painting your home’s interior walls is one of the easiest ways to upgrade the ambiance of the space. If you’re going for a dramatic look or wanting to feel relaxed, these can be attained by choosing specific colours. If you’re working with a smaller space, colour choice is even more important to brighten the space.

SCD Painting in Vancouver can help transform your space into the one you have always dreamt about. Keep reading for some tips on different, easily attainable styles for your home.

Create a dramatic look

Choosing colours for your home’s interior all depends on what type of look you are trying to have. You can create a dramatic look in a living room by having a monochromatic theme throughout. Match your wall colour to the shades of your furniture, and make things pop with accents. This will give your space a dramatic look.

If you’re planning to sell your home, you should avoid bold colours. Choose a lighter, neutral tone that will appeal to the greatest number of buyers. If you’re in your forever home, the sky is the limit when it comes to bold colour choices!

Make a space feel brighter and larger

If you are working with a smaller-sized space, lighter colours are the way to go. White and white shades are popular, but you have many options. There are several different options you can pick from, like light natural shades like green, blue, and beige. Choosing a shade of grey is a versatile option that also is easy to match accessories to. Giving the trim and doors a fresh coat of paint can also help brighten up the room.

Paint for luxury

If you have always wanted a luxurious theme in a room like a bedroom, the right choice in paint colour can go a long way. Choosing rich shades of colours like purple can give a soothing, lavish feel. Balancing a rich shade with choice accessories results in a warm, comforting space for you to spend time in.

If you’re looking for a relaxing vibe, consider shades of blue. Blue tones bring a sense of peace and tranquility. Grey can bring a rich and romantic tone to the room and is versatile too. For more colour tips, get in touch with SCD Painting.

Replace Your Siding This Summer to Protect Your Home This Winter

The summer season is the ideal time to replace your home’s siding. New siding can improve the curb appeal and resale value of your home, and protect it from the harsh Canadian winters. If your home is about due for a siding replacement, Chinook Exteriors in Calgary shares some reasons why you should replace your siding this summer.

An easier installation process

Working on the exterior features of your home is much easier to do during the summer: Your home’s siding is no exception. Installers won’t have to worry about snow or ice making the installation process more challenging. Working in the summer also ensures that adhesive materials won’t freeze. The cold can lead to the damage of the siding materials, or make them more prone to needing repairs in the future.

Because of the extra care that needs to be taken, and the cold, replacing siding in poor weather will take longer. This can drive up labour costs. Get a head start and connect with Chinook Exteriors about your siding replacement soon.

More affordable energy costs

New siding can improve your home’s curb appeal and aesthetics, but it does so much more than that. One of the biggest benefits of siding is that it can improve the energy efficiency of the home by boosting thermal performance. When getting your siding replaced, trouble areas that might be letting energy escape will be addressed. Plus, new siding, like insulated siding products, has a higher thermal performance than older products. Save money on heating our home this winter by replacing your siding in the summer.

Offering your home more protection

When the weather starts to get colder, you want your home to be protected. With quality siding, you won’t have to worry about water from rain or snow storms getting in. If your old siding is worse for wear, it can be easily damaged by wind, leaving your home’s components vulnerable to the weather. Once water gets in, it can start to damage other components of your house. Keep everything sealed and secured with new siding this summer.

When you might need a concrete cutting contractor

For typical renovations, homeowners have a wide selection of contractors to help with common projects. There are some home upgrades and projects that require a unique service. Sometimes, finding a qualified, experienced contractor for less common jobs, like concrete cutting, can be challenging.

CanWest Concrete Cutting & Coring Inc. in Calgary and Edmonton offers residential concrete cutting services. They share some home projects that might require their specialized services:

Cutting in a basement window

If you want to let in more natural light into the basement or need an egress window for a bedroom, you need to cut a hole into the foundation. You don’t want to let just anyone start hacking into a critical structural component of your home. When cutting new windows or replacing basement windows, trust a professional like CanWest.

Their trained operators have the proper equipment, skills, and experience to do the job correctly. They will cut the concrete quickly, and they’ll dig the window well, supply the window, and install a galvanized window well too. Learn more about egress window guidelines in Calgary.

Adding a separate basement entrance

If you’ve developed a secondary suite in your basement, you might want tenants to have a separate entrance. Having the privacy of their own entryway can also help attract potential tenants to your suite. CanWest can cut a new opening in your foundation or concrete wall to install the new entrance.

Some homeowners benefit from having a door into the basement, even if it isn’t for a rental suite. Providing this additional access and emergency exit can improve both function and safety. CanWest will do the job right, so your new entrance looks like it was always there!

Concrete repairs and removal

In addition to concrete cutting, Canwest also offers concrete repairs for commercial and residential customers. They can help repair your driveway, garage floor, and concrete pads.

They also offer full concrete removal services. CanWest has tandem dump trucks equipped with a 45-foot Hiab crane. This machinery can lift out and haul concrete, making for quick removal. Then, they’ll dispose of the material for you.
