Your Guide to Finding the Right Handyman for Your Job

From our Reliable Handymen: Your Guide to Finding the Right Handyman for Your Job

It’s time for your list of to-do projects around the house to be finally worked on. The front door needs a new door handle, the deck needs pressure washed, and you would like your cabinets in the kitchen to be updated. Updates around the home can be a lot of work, that is why we wanted to provide this guide on how to find the right handyman to hire for you. Let the professionals take care of the work so you can enjoy the results in no time.

It’s important to take your time when hiring a handyman. Rushing this crucial step and picking the first services you find might leave you with a poorly executed project or an unfinished job if you are not careful. On top of a bad project, the repairs, or costs to hire someone else will be more than hiring a regular, insured, and experienced professional in the first place.

When looking for a handyman to hire, there are a few things to keep in mind. You, the customer, need a professional who is here to work with and listen to your needs. You will want to look at services that are adaptable to your home’s environment and are dedicated to good customer service and quality work. Be sure to schedule an estimate with multiple services to compare. Scheduling estimates this way helps to avoid overpaying for a certain service. Also, it is the perfect opportunity to ask lots of questions, so make sure they are happy to help and answer you.

Look for the business online. Today, businesses can be often found with pages on Facebook and LinkedIn while having their own website as well. These are great sources to confirm they are a real business and to find reviews. During the estimate, ask to see that the handyman is insured and if they have any customer references available for you to review.

Those are our top tips on finding the right handyman for your job. You will want only skilled and trustworthy professionals in your home. Start planning for your next project today.

Cabinet Refacing Explained

If you’re tired of the way your kitchen looks and want to change it, you don’t have to start planning a full renovation. Changing the kitchen’s look is as easy as giving those cabinets a new makeover with cabinet refacing. Simply changing the look of the cabinet doors and drawers and applying a new veneer to exposed panels can do wonders. Best of all, it’s an entirely cost-effective option that many homeowners use. While that’s a basic explanation of cabinet refacing, there are still some important things you’ll have to decide on and consider.

There are a few steps involved in the process. This handy guide will help explain what refacing is and the process of it all. That way, you’ll have the information you need to determine if cabinet refacing is a good choice for your kitchen remodel.

Difference between replacing and refinishing?

Replacing and refinishing are other terms often used when talking about kitchen cabinet renovations. Replacing, as it sounds, means tearing out the old cabinets completely and installing new ones. That is ideal if you want a whole new look and design layout or if the cabinets are old and worn and need to be replaced. It can also be done if you are increasing the overall square footage or generally upgrading with higher-quality materials.

Refinishing relies on paints and stains to change the appearance of the cabinets without changing their design. It’s a great way to give wood cabinets a new look. You can use new paint colours to brighten the room. Keep in mind as well that refinishing keeps all the original doors and drawers. It can only be done with wood cabinets since the initial stages include sanding and priming the surface. Laminate and Thermo Foil cabinets cannot be refinished since the materials can’t be sanded to strip the old colour. The cabinets must also be in good condition; otherwise, any dents or scratches will show through.

What is cabinet refacing?

Refacing refers to stripping down the exterior parts of a cabinet and installing a new look. The physical structure and location of the cabinets and cabinet box stay the same. At a minimum, refacing removes all cabinet doors and drawers and replaces them with new fronts. A new veneer is also applied on the front and sides of the cabinet to transform the old cabinets into something totally new. New fixtures and door hinges can be installed if necessary, or if you want to enhance your new cabinet faces with modern hardware. New eye-catching door handles can help boost that final transformation even more. Matching hardware colours as well, such as with new faucets or wall paint, will help add a uniform appearance throughout the room.

Reasons to reface

Before refacing kitchen cabinets, think about the reason for doing so. Knowing when to reface and why will help make the process much easier. A main reason to reface is if the layout and design of your kitchen still works, but the overall appearance is old or worn-out looking. Since cabinets take up such a large amount of space in the kitchen––around 70%––utilizing them for an update is a cost-effective way to renovate. Time and cost are other reasons to reface, especially since the timeline is much shorter. With a professional’s help, refacing will only take between 3-5 days to complete. A full kitchen renovation, in comparison, could take weeks or months to complete, depending on the scale of work involved.

It’s also an eco-friendly option if going green is an important factor for your home. There is less waste as you reuse your cabinet structure and recycle the doors and drawers. Plus, there is no need to source wood for new custom cabinets. Well-built cabinet boxes can have a lifespan of upwards of 50 years, so refacing to change the look over that time is much easier than replacing each time.

What are the downsides?

Like any renovation, there are some downsides to consider with cabinet refacing. While the exterior of the cabinets is completely changed, the interior stays the same. That can be a problem if the interior is lacking storage or adequate shelving. If the paint or appearance is chipped or worn, additional costs to update the storage and buy paint must be factored in. Kitchen cabinet refacing is also more expensive than refinishing, and that cost can easily go up even more without proper planning. High-end designs or more exotic veneers are both major cost culprits when refacing. Before you buy any materials, browse for ideas online or speak with a professional for some options. You can still reface with a high-end finish, but without breaking the budget to do so.

The process

Whether DIYed or handled professionally, the process of refacing a cabinet is much the same. If the work is too much to do or the timeline too long, then hire a professional. Otherwise, the steps for refacing kitchen cabinets are as such:

Step 1: Remove all doors, drawers and fronts from the cabinets, including hinges and any handles or pulls. Leave the cabinet box intact.

Step 2: The front-facing cabinet box is covered with wood veneer, Rigid Thermofoil (RTF), or a laminate of your choice. Cabinet sides are also covered with the matching veneer.

Step 3: If necessary, new hinges can be installed or the old ones reused at this point. The new doors and drawers are then installed. New handles, pulls, or fixture details can be installed at this point for further customization. Other accessory ideas include custom lighting, new storage solutions or custom cabinet crown moulding.

Wood veneer vs RTF vs laminate

As mentioned above, there are three different options for covering your cabinets. Each material comes with its own benefits, appearances, and costs to factor in. There is no right or wrong decision, so decide what cost and appearance would best suit your kitchen.

Wood veneer: a thin layer of real wood that is glued to the surface of a cabinet. It provides all the beauty, appearance, and feel of natural wood cabinets, making it a popular choice. Most wood species, like oak, cherry, maple, or mahogany, can be used for a veneer. It is the most expensive option and must be sealed to protect it from moisture damage.

Laminate: made from plastic with a printed surface that can resemble the look of real wood if that is your choice. It can be made in a wide variety of different colours and patterns as well. Laminate is highly durable and moisture resistant, and it’s easy to clean, making it a popular option. Its midrange price makes it a less expensive option over real wood veneer.

RTF: This is a thin layer of vinyl that is installed by pressure-moulding it to medium-density-fiberboard (MDF) cabinets. It is one of the most durable and cost-effective options and comes in just as wide a range of colours and patterns. RTF can be made to resemble natural wood, even with realistic wood grain, but without the maintenance requirements.

Which cabinets can be refaced?

An important thing to know is that not all cabinets can be refaced. Cabinets need to be the right candidate and have a sturdy structure to accept refacing. Remember that refacing doesn’t repair blemishes or damages either; it just covers them up. If your cabinets have excessive damage, wear, or are warped from water, they likely are not a match for refacing. These problems will need to be repaired, or the cabinets replaced entirely if the damage is extensive. You should also look at the interior of the cabinets. Depending on how much hardware needs to be replaced or accessories added, the increased cost may not be worthwhile.

Otherwise, candidates for cabinet refacing include:

The frame and boxes are in good condition: The veneer needs a smooth surface to adhere properly. Any warped or damaged surfaces risk the veneer peeling or the damage underneath worsening. The actual structure of your cabinets need to be in strong condition too. If not, consider a cabinet replacement.

The hardware inside is in good condition: Bumpy drawer tracks or creaky hinges won’t end the possibility of refacing, but will ruin the effect. If the interior isn’t the same quality as the exterior, make sure to plan some updates.

The cost

Cabinet refacing costs will vary depending on materials, whether you DIY or hire a pro, and how many cabinets you own. As the cost of cabinet refacing varies widely, it’s best to get an accurate estimate from a professional before you begin. They’ll factor in the size of your cabinets, what veneer you plan to use, and how much time and labour is involved. Cabinets with more involved designs or tight angles will likely cost more since the labour and installation become more complicated.

Data from The Spruce show that refacing is just 50% of the cost of installing new custom cabinets. It is also 70% to 80% of the cost of replacing cabinets with new stock ones.

Cost-wise, it’s a worthwhile option, but to ensure that investment, it’s important to decide whether you plan to DIY or hire a professional.

DIY or pro?

Choosing to reface alone or with a professional comes down to a matter of cost and skill. While DIY is typically done to save money, cabinet refacing may not be the best project to tackle alone. To start, there are many necessary tools when properly refacing cabinets, which, if you don’t already own, will increase the costs. Refacing also requires the right amount of skill and attention to detail. If done wrong, the final look can easily be ruined and the value lost in the process. The process of cutting and shaping the veneer or laminate is one that requires more skill than most DIYers have. Not only do mistakes mean more time spent fixing them, but they also mean more money to repair the damage.

Underlying issues, such as cabinet damage or uneven hardware, can easily be missed by a DIYer and may even mean that refacing isn’t an option. Before you tackle any DIY refacing, talk to a professional for some estimates and help. They can provide the right tips for your kitchen, provide cost breakdowns or find ways to accommodate your budget. If parts of the kitchen cabinet refacing process can be DIYed, like removing old doors and drawers and reinstalling them, that can help cut cabinet refacing costs without losing quality.

Pro benefits

Instead of the headache and potential stress of trying to DIY your cabinets, consider the benefits of hiring a professional. They’ll have all the right tools from the start and the right experience to guarantee a quality finish. The work will also be handled within a few days, so you can get back to using your kitchen in no time. A professional can also provide design consultations or ideas for the finished look. If you can’t decide between a painted laminate finish or wood veneer, your contractor can help. With years of experience, they’ll have the right eye for details when it comes to maximizing the transformation of your cabinets.

The cost you do invest initially into a professional will also be a long-term investment. If you ever plan to sell, potential buyers will value attractive and professionally-finished cabinets. Both in your lifestyle and home value, you’ll benefit by working with a professional when refacing kitchen cabinets.

What to look for in a professional

Proper experience and skill are essential when hiring professional cabinet refacing services. Before you hire any company, check how many years of experience the company has. Over that time, have they maintained a strong base of happy clients? Make sure to look at past projects, not just for quality checks, but to see if you personally like their work. Once you have a company in mind, don’t hesitate to talk to one of them and ask some questions. Find out about their skills, the work process, how long it will take, and any included extra services. Some companies include soft closer drawers and hinges as part of the upgrade and cabinet refacing cost.

Also, don’t just get one estimate from a single company and base your costs off that. It’s better to get a range of estimates and service options so that you can find the best company for your needs. Be sure to get those estimates in writing to ensure you get the same offer once you settle on a match. Once you have the right company and professional contractor, you can enjoy peace of mind during your cabinet renovation.

The benefits of retrofitting plumbing during a major renovation

Going green and saving money is becoming more common among homeowners as a valuable change. It not only helps boost your home’s value or appeal to more buyers, but it also improves your overall lifestyle. Retrofitting plumbing, in particular, is one such source of savings and benefits.

Valkon Construction in Edmonton is a general contracting company for construction and maintenance. They share some of the benefits of having your bathroom plumbing retrofitted:

What is retrofitting?

While sometimes thought of regarding electrical work, retrofitting can also be applied to bathroom appliances. In this case, retrofitting refers to replacing plumbing fixtures, like taps, showerheads and toilets, with water-saving fixtures instead. Low-flow faucets reduce the amount of water that is put out, upwards of 60%. That doesn’t reduce the water pressure, as some use aeration to add air to the water and create enough force.

Start in the bathroom

Things like the toilet and shower tend to use both the most water and the most heat with each use. By retrofitting these, you are cutting the amount used by each and so saving more. The best way to get the most accurate estimate of water consumption is to get a water audit. That way, a professional can tell you how much water you are using and where the biggest source is. Once you retrofit those, retrofit the sinks as well and get savings all around.

Leave it to a professional

Potential buyers who see that a home is energy efficient and saves money will be much more interested as a result. Renovating a bathroom shouldn’t be done as a DIY project. Instead, to ensure the job’s quality and skill, it’s best to hire a professional contractor.

Some fixtures may require more skill or care to install properly. Others have warranties when you hire a professional, which you may risk losing or nullifying by DIYing. Retrofitting also involves opening up walls to reach the plumbing behind, which is an easy task with a professional. However, DIYers can risk damaging electrical wiring behind the walls or resealing poorly and risking future water damage. With a professional, you won’t have to worry about any of these risks. Instead, you can enjoy peace of mind and value-saving upgrades.

Siding damage: when to replace and when to repair

Some siding damage is more extensive and requires a full replacement. However, other types of damage can be repaired. Knowing when to repair can save more money if the damage is minor while replacing siding when needed can prevent costly problems down the road. How do you know to make the call for a replacement?

Olsen Exteriors Ltd. in Calgary is a professional exterior renovations and siding company. They share how to know when to repair your siding and when to replace:

Repair: minor holes and cracks

If caught early enough, these damages can be easily repaired with a professional’s help. The risk of leaving these small issues, however, invites the problems worsening and becoming a replacement job. Minor holes can be caused by hail dents or stray stones from a lawnmower. Chips are likely a culprit of weather, such as extreme cold, causing cracks in vinyl siding. If the issue is isolated, then repair the damaged sections.

Repair: loose siding

Loose siding can happen for a few different reasons, but it isn’t always a cause to replace. Strong winds or poor initial installation can be the culprits for siding to loosen over time. If it does, it affects the quality and functionality of the siding. Heating and cooling can escape and lower the overall energy efficiency of your home. Loose siding can be easily repaired by a professional and doesn’t need to be replaced. Just be sure to have it repaired sooner rather than later to save your heating bills.

Replace: Extensive damage

If your siding has experienced extensive damage like the example in the image above, you’ll need a replacement. Damage from a major hail storm or fire will leave siding irreparable. Protect your home from moisture, and retain its value, by investing in a siding replacement.

Replace: bubbling and mould

Mould is not something you want to risk worsening by just spot repairing the areas of your siding that have mould growth. While it may clear the immediate area, there’s no guarantee that more isn’t hiding beneath the siding. It’s better to hire a professional first to remove the mould and then replace the siding. Also, make sure to find out where and how the mould got started. It may be moisture behind the siding that was caused by a hole or damaged siding. Bubbling is another sign that there is moisture beneath the siding. Water has become trapped and is causing water damage, but it also risks damaging your home. If any water gets into the foundation, you’ll be faced with costly interior leaks and damages as well.

Replace: fading and worn

Faded or worn-out siding is a likely sign that it is nearing the end of its lifespan. Instead of waiting for the siding to fall apart, invest in a replacement right away. In addition to the safety risks, worn siding harms your home’s curb appeal and overall value. If you’re planning to sell soon, then the initial cost of new siding will pay off with a great ROI and higher resale value. According to Remodeling Magazine’s cost vs value 2020 report, siding replacement has an ROI of 77%, making it a worthwhile investment.

Preventative plumbing: why you need it and how it saves cost

How often do you take the time to think about your plumbing when it is working correctly? The answer is likely never or very rarely, which, unfortunately, leads to plumbing emergencies. Preventative maintenance is more than just about the health of your plumbing; it also helps save money from emergency costs.

Proactive Plumbing and Heating in Calgary offers professional plumbing and heating services. They share the importance and benefits of having proactive plumbing to prevent emergencies:

Spend now to save later

Spending money even when there isn’t a problem may sound like a strange thing to do, but with plumbing, it’s not. Paying for a professional plumber to do annual checkups and maintenance on your home prevents the risk of emergencies. Unexpected clogged drains, leaks, or floods can all cost even more to fix than paying to avoid the problem. Even if you only think that there are strange noises or potential leaks, it’s always worthwhile to hire a plumber.

Cost reality

Once a plumbing problem becomes an issue for a professional, those repair costs quickly go up. These repair figures are from HomeAdvisor reports for various plumbing issues. A clogged drain, for example, can range upwards of $579 to clear. Leaking pipes can range from $150 – $350, while a burst pipe jumps to $1,000 – $4,000 in repairs. According to the City of Calgary, a leaky faucet resulting in a steady stream can waste 15,000 litres of water per month. In costs, that’s an added $47.26 on your monthly water bills. With preventative plumbing, a clogged drain or leaky toilet would only cost $100 – $150 to repair.

Catch leaks and clogs early

The best way to prevent unexpected breaks and repairs or higher monthly bills is proactive maintenance. Hire a plumber to do an annual inspection to help catch avoidable problems. Inspections are especially important for plumbing that is used daily, like sinks, showers, and toilets. For the rest of the year, practice DIY maintenance. Inspect your toilets and faucets for leaks or sounds of running water, which may mean a hidden leak. Regularly clean your drains with safe to use DIY drain cleaners and not harsh chemicals that can damage the pipes. If you suspect there may be an issue or minor leak, and a DIY approach doesn’t fit the problem, call a plumber.

Repair and replace as needed

Don’t be tempted to ignore a minor problem now, just to save some money in the moment. A new faucet may cost in the low hundreds to replace now but could spike much higher if it worsens. Sometimes DIY repairs, like installing new faucets or clearing minor clogs, can easily fix the problem. They can also save money through a DIY budget fix. Still, if the problem needs a professional and the suggestion is to repair or replace, there’s likely a good reason. Repair as needed, but also consider how much you are spending on those repairs. If the costs keep recurring, it may be more cost-effective to replace instead.

Plumbers in Calgary

At Proactive Plumbing and Heating, their goal is to help you save money by avoiding costly emergency plumbing. Their professionals will review your home plumbing and help create a plan that will prevent emergencies from happening. That way, you’ll save money and have absolute peace of mind. So no matter what type of help you need, Proactive Plumbing and Heating is ready to help anytime.

Ideas for eco-friendly home upgrades

With a focus turning to sustainable living, more homeowners are choosing eco-friendly renovations. Doing so is a win-win situation. You get a beautiful new upgrade or addition to your home and lessened the impact on the environment.

O’Brien Contracting Ltd. in Vancouver is a professional and green forward-thinking renovations company. They share some ways to incorporate greener alternatives for your home upgrades:

Reclaimed flooring

The great thing about reclaimed flooring is that it’s not only a green option but also cost-effective for the materials. Rather than spending more on conventional hardwood floors, reclaimed and recycled wood from old flooring or buildings will cost less and be totally unique. Most species of wood, from pine, oak, and chestnut, can be reclaimed. They are much less likely to warp or bend over time, and some are even old-growth wood, which offers a much smoother, clean appearance. Reclaimed wood will require more labour to refinish, so factor that it into your budget.

Eco-friendly paints

Painting is another popular renovation project and one that can be just as green to do. Look for low- or no-volatile organic compound (VOC) paint. VOCs are harmful chemicals that are not only bad to breathe but also harmful to the environment. Eco-friendly paints will be low or completely free of VOC chemicals. They are much safer and friendly to use, and you still get the same quality and appearance.

Recycled countertops

You don’t need real marble or granite countertops to give your kitchen a show-stopping feature. Instead, start looking into recycled countertops that transform old products into stunning new surfaces. Popularly options include glass and concrete as recycled surfaces. With recycled glass, the glass fragments in the surface create a colourful and eye-catching countertop. No two glass countertops will look the same, so your design will be one of a kind. If you like the look of wood countertops and don’t mind the upkeep, you can have a countertop made from reclaimed wood. Ask your contractor about your options for countertops made from recycled products.

LED bulbs

Lights help brighten a room, highlight features like art pieces and can make or break good ambiance.  LED lighting is energy-efficient and eco-friendly and uses a fraction of the power a traditional incandescent bulb uses. The bulbs themselves use upwards of 95% of their energy illuminate, with minimal heat generated. Other conventional bulbs can use up to 95% of their energy as heat and only 5% for light.

Major Renovations in Vancouver

Sustainable futures meet sustainable homes when you choose O’Brien Contracting Ltd. for your renovations. They believe in implementing greener solutions by making homes even more efficient than ever. Whether an eco-friendly kitchen or bathroom renovation, a new addition, and more, O’Brien Contracting is ready to help.

The value of a trusted paint and supply company

Whether you are a contractor or a DIY homeowner, finding the right store for your painting and decorating supplies is key. Contractors need quality materials that are readily available to provide for their customer’s needs. DIYers need supplies, but also sometimes they need a few professional tips for their projects. That’s where Calgary North Decorating Benjamin Moore, independently and locally owned in Calgary, can help.

They provide quality paint supplies and window coverings for DIY retail and servicing contractors alike. They share some more reasons why their company is the best place for your needs:

DIY: professional paint support

Painting is a great DIY project and a great way to save money on your renovation. Picking the right paint colour, quality, and finish, can feel stressful. Interior paint has qualities and requirements that are different from the exterior, and even paint finishes affect the final appearance. That’s why having professional support, like Calgary North Decorating, is so beneficial. Their team of experts can help suggest the right colour combinations, finishes, or unique options like chalk paint and where to use it. If you’re not sure how much paint is necessary for the job, give them your total square footage of the surface you want to paint and they’ll sell you the right amount.

DIY: interior designer window covering help

Window coverings will add style and privacy and provide better energy savings for your home. Your monthly bills will go down, and your home’s value up. Between blinds, shades, and shutters, picking the right style and look for your home is more involved than just based on looks alone. Having a professional interior designer to help means you get professional advice and support to make sure your purchase is the right investment. Calgary North Decorating offers that service when you need new window coverings. Their professional interior designers will come to your home and offer a free consultation and quote for the perfect price and match.

Contractor: timely service

As a contractor, getting materials on time and quickly is an important part of keeping up with renovation timelines. Delays in orders can lead to costly problems or drawing out a project that shouldn’t take that long. For homeowners who need a timely turnaround, whether to sell or otherwise, that can be a major problem. It’s up to the contractor to ensure a smooth process, making a trusted company a key part of that role. Once you have all the right supplies, materials, and amounts, Calgary North Decorating can save time by you texting in that order. They’ll put together everything in a timely manner so that you can provide better service for your clients.

Contractor: quality materials and customer satisfaction

Part of hiring a trusted contractor means homeowners expect quality work and a quality finish as a result. The skill and years of experience a contractor offers can’t be beaten by a DIY job. Personal skill will play a big part in a quality finish, but using high-quality materials is just as necessary.

Calgary North Decorating only carries top-quality paint supplies and window coverings from primers, interior and exterior paint, wood stains, and specialty paints. These products are guaranteed to be long-lasting and just as visually attractive throughout those years. It also helps guarantee that clients and customers will return and rely on the same contractor again. Homeowners get quality with great results, and contractors benefit from working with a company that can be trusted, and that holds the same values.

Kitchen renovations that blend open main floor layouts

A residential property renovation by Kay2 Contracting in NE Calgary, Alberta.

Kitchen renovations, along with other main floor rooms, are popular and value-boosting projects. To maximize those benefits, and have a great ROI, consider an open layout renovation. The design is spacious and visually attractive and adds great visual appeal. The right planning is essential, so consider some of these designs.

Kay 2 Contracting in Edmonton and Calgary provides high-quality home renovations, and custom home builds. They share some different types of open concept renovations and design ideas:

Kitchen and dining room

This design is more popular as traditional separate dining rooms are seeing less prevalence in modern homes. Opening up the two rooms creates a sense of connection and flow that welcomes more socialization. Meals can be prepared in the kitchen and then transferred to the seating area to be enjoyed together.

This layout can also include a kitchen island for seating and eating instead of using the dining area. Without walls, creative design planning, and furniture placement act as the new visual separation between spaces. In that case, the dining table and chairs act as a visual separation to the open concept. They can still be used for more formal dining and entertaining, but otherwise, the kitchen island is the main seating area.

Kitchen and living room

Blending casual seating and socializing with the kitchen creates an area for both entertainment and socialization. Compared to the dining room, this is a more popular main floor renovation for open layouts. Often, the kitchen is renovated into a one wall kitchen, L-shaped, or peninsula with an island. The layout is dependent on different homes, but the idea is always to have an open connection between the two rooms. Because these two rooms blend so well, they are also a great choice to renovate together. Pairing colour schemes, furniture styles, or lighting will help create a design flow for a unified space.

Kitchen, living room, dining room

This three-in-one renovation and the typical layout when thinking of an open concept has no separation between any rooms. All three areas are instead open for an uninterrupted flow of space and multifunctionality. When considering this layout, there are a few key design elements to consider. Without the use of walls, “rooms” are created with creative design spacing or the use of area rugs. A large dining room table set to the side, for example, creates the sense of a formal dining area. Arranged sofas and comfy seating with an area rug help separate a living room or casual seating space. Colours as well should be blended throughout the space to help create a unified sense throughout.

One design trick is to pick a feature colour and then use it for subtle accents throughout. For example, a feature living room wall, furniture, or cabinet colours are all great choices. Another tip is to always work with a professional contractor. They can help ensure that your homes can support an open layout design, both visually and structurally.

5 Revealing Tips to Find a Reliable Commercial Renovation Contractor

As a small business owner, your business property says a lot about your company. It doesn’t matter if you own a retail store or a financial consulting company; you need to make a good impression on your customers and clients.

However, if you need to make changes for a more aesthetically pleasing environment, it may not be in your wheelhouse to do so. In this case, you need Edmonton commercial contractors. They can completely change or enhance your building within the parameters of your budget and bring valuable insight into your project.

The only question is, how do you find the best contractor for your business? Keep reading to find out.

1. Use Social Media to Get Recommendations

If you know other business owners who have hired commercial building renovation contractors, you may be able to reach out to them for advice. However, you can address a larger portion of your community by joining a Facebook community page.

People use these pages for buying, selling, and trading. However, these community pages also provide a great platform for people to ask for recommendations about local services.

2. Check Out Reviews and Testimonials

For more information, you can also find local commercial contractor websites to find out more about them. These businesses often publish customer reviews and testimonials. Customer reviews will tell you all you need to know about their customer service, quality of work, and professionalism.

3. Take a Look at Their Previous Projects

It’s one thing to hear positive reviews and another to see the evidence for yourself. One of the best ways to find a commercial renovation contractor with the touch you’re looking for is to review images of their work.

Most websites have a page dedicated to their previous projects. Here, you can get a good idea of their workmanship, style, and abilities.

4. Ask for a Free Consultation

Before hiring a commercial renovation contractor, reach out to several local competitors for a free consultation. Most will come out to your building to see first-hand what they’re dealing with. This will provide you with the opportunity to talk to them about your vision and your budget.

Before they leave, make sure they give you a quote. However, in most cases, they’ll need to return to their own office to draw up numbers and figures before getting your an accurate estimate.

5. Compare and Contrast Pricing

Finally, after you’ve spoken to several potential contractors, compare and contrast the quotes they’ve given you. Remember that a low bid shouldn’t be your only determining factor. You also need to consider things like references, project pictures, experience, warranties, and more.

The best commercial remodeling contractors for your project aren’t necessarily the cheapest.

How to Maximize Space in Your Mudroom, Laundry Room and Basement

Discover How to Maximize Space in Your Mudroom, Laundry Room and Basement

The change of seasons has a way of making you notice the clutter or crowded spaces in your homes. Whether it is winter slush and salt, fall and springtime mud, your mudroom is filled with the scattered shoes of your family, the laundry room has heaps of clothes, laundry baskets, and the ironing board in the way, and the basement has become a dumping ground of boxes and containers full of who knows what. If the clutter is overwhelming, it’s time to consider how to maximize space in your mudroom, laundry room, and basement today.

If you are trying to find a way to maximize space in these rooms, organization and having a plan are key. There are many options to reorganizing a room. You can purchase or have items customized to fit your unique needs such as: cabinetry, closets, built in shelving units, family coat racks, hooks, and more. All these options provide more surface space to store or hang up your belongings. For example, investing in shelves to store your family’s shoes is not only neater, but takes up less space than a bunch of shoes on the floor. If every item has a specific place to go, it will be easier to maintain a clean and organized.

To maximize space and make sure all your needs are met, consider hiring a professional contractor and carpenter to build what you need in your mudroom, laundry room, or basement. All contractors begin with an estimate so you can discuss what needs must be met, what your ideas are, and the limits of your budget. A custom-built job might be more efficient than buying multiple pieces of storage-furniture to maximize space. A built in set of cabinet and shelves will handle all organization challenges at once.

Make the most out of your space. Building shelf space or installing cabinets will turn an empty wall or corner into a space of opportunity. With more places to store your belongings, these tough rooms will become more manageable and enjoyable with the new updates. Make the most of your space and begin looking for what projects work the best for you today.
