How to stay safe around overhead powerlines

There is a potential hazard to your safety whenever there is electricity. Overhead powerlines are no exception. Practicing safe electrical habits around overhead powerlines is important to avoid serious accidents.

Mr. Electric in Calgary is a team of professional electricians who want you to stay safe around overhead powerlines. Here they offer a few safety tips.

1. Locate powerlines

The first step in overhead powerline safety is simply to know where the powerlines are. Understanding where the powerlines are can inform your actions and keep you safe. Therefore, identify the nearby powerlines before starting any outdoor home maintenance or yard work. Trees can obscure powerlines, so ensure you look carefully.

2. Proper ladder use

Ladders or other tall pieces of equipment can touch powerlines if carried incorrectly. To prevent accidental contact, carry your ladder or equipment horizontally and never vertically. Furthermore, check for overhead powerlines before raising the ladder. You don’t want to accidentally touch the power line or climb into the powerlines when climbing the ladder. The ladder or equipment should be 10 feet away from the powerlines. Additionally, ensure to use a wooden or fibreglass ladder while outside. Metal conduct electricity, so metal ladders are dangerous.

3. Plant trees away from powerlines

While your new tree plantings are too short to be a hazard now, remember they will grow! Therefore, plant your new trees far enough away from the powerlines that they won’t grow into them. Once the trees have grown into the powerlines, you must call your local utility unit or professional arborist to trim them.

If a tree falls on a powerline during a storm, stay away from it and call the electricity provider’s emergency line for the next steps. Do not attempt to remove or trim these trees yourself.

4. Educate your children

It’s imperative to educate your children on powerline safety. Firstly, children should never climb trees around powerlines. Secondly, never fly kites around powerlines. If the power line (or any other object) gets tangled in a power line, do not attempt to retrieve it.

Other tips for electrical safety

Electricity is incredibly dangerous. Consequently, you should never attempt any electrical work yourself. It doesn’t matter if it’s trimming your trees that have grown into powerlines or trying to fix a faulty wire at home; always leave all work involving electricity to the professionals. Electricians have the training to perform electrical tasks safely, whereas the average homeowner does not. If you attempt DIY electrical work, you could be electrocuted, seriously injured, or leave your home at risk of a fire.

The Damp Basement Signs That Could Mean Trouble For Your Home

Blog submitted by Aquatech Waterproofing

Not sure if your basement is getting damped or not? It is an excellent subject for concern, especially when you don’t know what it is.

It can be very hazardous not just for your home but for you too.

Basement structure lays a solid foundation and holds your premise for a long time, and once it starts getting weaker, it will only add to the mess for you. But you can avoid this with timely actions taken with exterior waterproofing Toronto.

Reasons You Need Basement Waterproofing Toronto

– Ineffective grading
– Defective downspouts for gutters
– Foundation cracks
– Poor sump pit
– Basement condensation
– And the most obvious is an interior water leak

A Few Signs You Might Have Missed Out

If left for too long, damp basement issues can devastate any premise. In addition to strengthening your house, you can keep your basement protected with exterior waterproofing Toronto. There are a few signs that you should be well aware of:

Mildew Appearance On The Wall

Mould and mildew on walls are only the results of humidity and a lack of air, but occasionally, plumbing leaks inside and outside the building can be blamed. Poorly insulated heating lines can also bring on moisture buildup behind the walls.

Aquatech Basement waterproofing company Toronto can help you with this.

Bad Odour

leaky basement Toronto will have a foul odour; hence, it is the most noticeable red flag to spot in a musty basement. It is usually unbearable and is probably something that needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

Efflorescence On Walls And Floors

A condition called efflorescence is brought on by evaporated water. In this, salt deposits on walls and leaves a white or grayish-white residue which is not very pleasant to see.

A moist or leaky basement will always show signs like this.

Floor Paint Peels Off

Efflorescence pushes against the paint film and results in peeling. Moreover, moisture can easily infiltrate through concrete without a moisture barrier.

Besides, old concrete can crumble and take the floor paint with it.

Notable Damp Patches And Window Leaks

Make sure to look for any water stains on the walls, floors, and ceiling. Look for dark stains, drywall that is damaged, or paint that is bubbling.

Water stains might arise from seepage or leaky windows, or they can be the consequence of something as simple as a one-time spill in the kitchen.

Now you know the signs that should be addressed on time.

Can You Do It All Alone?

Not really. The basement is that crucial part of your house where you cannot let anything worse happen. If you are a professional repairing expert, it’s all good; otherwise, it would be best to hire the best basement waterproofing company Toronto with years of expertise.

Why Should You Get It Fixed By An Expert?

Although, after reading all the signs in-depth, you still might not be fully aware of all the solutions. You need basement waterproofing services that help your basement keep out all hidden issues.

Top basement renovation tips

Basements are one of the most common home improvement projects. Whether you’re adding a guest suite complete with a kitchen and bathroom or adding a games room or family room, your professional basement contractor can help.

TW Construction in Edmonton is a basement renovation expert. They offer a few tips for remodelling your basement.

Look for moisture

One of the first things you need to do before implementing your new basement design is check for moisture. Basements are prone to dampness, so they must be properly waterproofed. If you find that moisture is accumulating in your basement, it needs to be fixed before you install new drywall, paint, and flooring.

A damp basement can also point to more significant problems with your home’s foundation. For example, moisture can come from foundation cracks. While these may seem benign, they often become very serious. As a result, you may end up with mould growth, ruined floors, or even a flooded basement.

Decide on your basement’s purpose

Whenever you set out on a home remodel, it’s best to know why you’re renovating in the first place. For example, what do you want your basement to be? Do you need additional bedrooms, a suite for visiting guests, a man cave, or somewhere to host parties? The function of your new basement will determine the design. Moreover, the clearer you are on what you need your basement to be, the better. Your contractor can then take your requirements and translate them into the best basement remodel for your lifestyle.

Good lighting is crucial

Generally, basements don’t get a lot of natural light. This means your lighting choices are extremely important. The lights will set the tone for the space and provide some much-needed brightness. Additionally, these lights have to work with the room. If your basement has a low ceiling, hanging lights are not the best option. Instead, you may choose recessed lighting, also called pot lights. Consider how lighting can enhance your space and establish the proper ambiance.

Choose waterproof flooring

In a perfect world, you will have fixed all dampness issues before renovating. However, that doesn’t mean you will never encounter water problems. If your home ever develops foundation issues, the dampness will likely return to your basement. Also, basements are generally more prone to flooding due to extreme weather events. Because of this, it’s best to choose waterproof or water-resistant flooring options. This is something TW Construction can help you choose.

Superior storage solutions with custom cabinets

As you set out to renovate or update your home, consider custom cabinetry to solve all your storage challenges. Custom cabinets are built with you and your lifestyle in mind. They meet your unique needs and bring a beautiful touch to your home’s interior design.

Crown Custom Cabinetry in Calgary is your local custom cabinetry expert. They share helpful information about custom cabinets and storage solutions for different areas throughout the house.

Custom cabinets for your kitchen

The kitchen is such an important room in the house- and it has a lot of high expectations to live up to! Your kitchen needs to be not only aesthetically impressive but also highly functional. The cabinets you choose are critical for establishing the visual feel of your kitchen and its usability. Therefore, it’s essential to choose wisely.

Custom cabinets are the best way to tick both of these boxes. This is because custom cabinets are intentionally designed to be beautiful with a wide variety of high-quality materials available. Furthermore, you have complete control over the storage, features, and layout. Mass-produced cabinets may not give you enough storage, use the available space to its full potential, or give you the right kind of storage. Find inspiration for your new kitchen cabinets!

Custom cabinets for your bathroom

The key to avoiding chaos in the bathroom is adequate storage. Otherwise, the sprawl of personal items, hair dryers, moisturizers, and the like can easily take over all available counter space. It’s also important to remember that bathrooms are usually smaller spaces. Assembly-made cabinets might not work with the available space and can easily make your bathroom feel cluttered. When you incorporate custom cabinets into your bathroom, you customize your storage solutions to suit your lifestyle. That’s why Crown Custom Cabinets offer different types of custom bathroom cabinets, such as linen towers, medicine cabinets, and furniture-style vanities.

Custom cabinets for your closet

Whether you have finally moved into a home with a walk-in closet or are looking for a built-in closet for your bedroom, custom-built cabinets can help you make the most of your space. Many walk-in closets are still on the small size, so intentional storage that meets your needs is crucial. Similarly, you don’t want your stand-alone, built-in closet to be so large that it takes up your whole bedroom. With custom cabinetry, you can maximize your organizational capabilities even in small spaces. In addition, an organized closet space for your things will help your room stay tidy and calm.

Custom cabinets for your laundry room

Laundry rooms quickly descend into mayhem, especially with large families. Custom cabinets can help. Shelving, cupboards, drawers, and counters bring organization to your typical, hectic laundry room. With cabinetry, for example, you can have somewhere to store your teen’s unfolded laundry, store the three different kinds of detergent, or hide your husband’s hockey gear.

Custom Cabinets in Calgary

Crown Custom Cabinetry is a family-owned and operated custom cabinet maker in Calgary. They have more than 30 years of experience providing homeowners beautiful, durable, and quality storage solutions. All of their products are designed and handcrafted for each client. None of their cabinets are mass-produced or created on an assembly line. Their customer service is always excellent, and they always complete projects on time and within budget.

4 electrical services you may not know about

Professional electrical work is vital to every residential and commercial construction or renovation project. That’s why your local electrical company likely provides a wide range of services to meet your every electrical need!

Westsprings Electrical Services in Calgary is a full-service electrical company providing residential and commercial services. They share information about four electrical services you might need.

1. Panel upgrades

Regular inspections from a professional electrical company are the best way to prevent electrical fires, shocks, and other hazards. Problems can occur in the wiring between rooms or in individual plugs; however, your electrical panel can also malfunction. Consequently, it’s vital that your panel is checked and maintained. If you have a faulty panel, your electrician can recommend and install a panel upgrade. Conversely, if your existing panel can no longer meet your power needs, you need to upgrade to a newer and more robust model with more capacity.

2. Hot tub wiring

We all know that water and electricity do not mix. Therefore, you want to know that your new hot tub has been wired safely! Electrical work is always dangerous for inexperienced and untrained homeowners. Hot tub wiring is another example of electrical work you should never DIY. Your professional electrician has the necessary tools and knowledge to get your new hot tub working safely and efficiently.

3. Emergency lighting and alarms

Commercial spaces must have emergency lighting and alarm systems to protect employees and customers. In an emergency, these systems notify individuals and allow for the safe evacuation of people off the premises. Your electrician will be able to recommend the best products for the size and layout of your building, as well as install and maintain these electrical systems.

4. Data communications

Data communication services are essential for many modern companies. Professional electricians, like those at Westsprings Electrical Services, have experience working with these complex systems. For example, they can perform data cabling, cable testing, and labelling. Additionally, they work on patch panels. Where to install a fence around your yard

Fences are a multifunctional addition to any front or backyard and ones that can easily be customized. Fences add excellent value, whether a privacy fence on a deck, an ornamental fence for a stylish look for your yard or for pool safety.

Go Fencing in Winnipeg is a professional vinyl fencing company. They share where you can add a fence throughout your yard for curb appeal, security, and function:

Yard perimeter fences

The type of fences you install around your front yard won’t necessarily be the same as your backyard. With the front yard more focused on curb appeal, a vinyl picket fence is a great choice. The height isn’t so tall that it will obstruct any views and the picket design adds charm and style. For the backyard, a taller, full-sized fence is the better choice. You want to have some privacy from the neighbours and create a clear property barrier for your yard space. Backyard fences are also a must if you have pets or children, and want to keep them safe.

Privacy deck fences

In addition to having a backyard fence, you can install a second fence for your deck. As a raised platform, your deck will likely be visible above your fence line. Adding a vinyl privacy fence can turn your deck into a private oasis. The fence style is taller and without gaps, so no views can get through. A semi-privacy fence is a great middle option for something less absolute in privacy. The smaller gaps in the fence will let a breeze through and let you still have a bit of a view.

Pool fences

If you have a pool in your backyard, it’s a good safety addition to having a fence around it. It’s also law if you live in Winnipeg to have a fence around any body of water with more than 24”. With a vinyl pool fence, you can add a deck design to dress up your pool. Keep in mind that backyard pools have size, fence requirements, and safety regulations. Before building anything alone, call in a professional fence contractor. They have the experience to build a quality fence and ensure it’s up to all regulations and bylaws.

Fence Contractors in Winnipeg

Go Fencing provides quality fencing that adds security, appeal, and long-lasting value to your home. As specialists in vinyl fencing, their team only provides the highest standard of products. Their top-notch installations, experience with regulations and bylaws and attention to detail guarantee peace of mind.

Small plumbing troubles that cost big in the long run

How much trouble can a small leak really be? Is a backed-up toilet more than just an inconvenience? As a homeowner, if you’ve ever asked yourself those questions, call a plumber. Just because the plumbing issue is minor doesn’t mean it’s not a sign of more significant trouble or potentially costly repairs.

Your Guy Plumbing & Drainage in Surrey is a professional, full-service plumbing company. They share what seemingly minor plumbing issues can actually cost big if left unrepaired:

Dripping faucets or running toilets

Does your faucet tend to drip now and then, or does your toilet run longer than it should after flushing? These may seem like minor inconveniences, but both are types of leaks that can quickly turn costly. A toilet chain caught under the flapper can waste an additional 3,000 litres per month. If it’s a leaky faucet, even a single drop per second can waste upwards of 2,500 litres a month. For a year, that’s a lot of wasted water and even higher monthly water bills. If you don’t know how to fix a leaky faucet, call Your Guy Plumbing & Drainage for the repair.

Backed up toilet

Does your toilet tend to back up frequently? If so, call in a plumber to help. It could be a sign that your septic tank needs to be emptied or that an encroaching tree root is affecting the sewer pipelines. Overfilling septic tanks can quickly lead to emergency emptying, which you want to avoid. Similarly, check outside for trees near your home. Removing a problem tree may be more cost-effective than paying for a burst pipeline if tree roots are the root issue.

Lowered water pressure

It may not be immediately noticeable, but even lowered water pressure signifies trouble. As mineral deposits build up in your water heater and lead to clogs, it causes that drop in water pressure. It could also be a sign in the case of an older water heater that rust is building up. To avoid the cost of a complete water heater replacement, call in a professional to have your water heater flushed out. That will clear away any buildup and help prolong the life of your plumbing.

Plumbers in Surrey

When you need fast, fair, and reliable service, Your Guy Plumbing and Drainage is there to help. They are a full-service plumbing company with a team of trained plumbing professionals. Whether you have a leaky tap or need a whole home re-piping, no job is too small or too big for their team.

Things to know about your paint supplies

When shopping for paint supplies, there are a lot of options out there. Understanding the meaning of paint bases, primers, and finishes, whether it’s an interior or exterior project, all matter when buying supplies.

Benjamin Moore Pinnacle South in Edmonton is a professional paint supply and materials company. They share what you need to know about your paint supplies before buying.

Paint bases

Paint comes in many forms, the most commonly known are water-based (aka “Latex” or “water-soluble”) and oil-based.  “water” based paints are easier to work with, and are designed to be low or 0 VOC, meaning that they cut down on the amount of chemicals being emitted by the paint as it is applied and dries.  It needs to be said that everything has VOCs in it, even water and the human body, but by reducing the amount of VOCs being emitted by your paint, you help ensure that you don’t add extra to your body chemistry.  These features are also copied in water-based primers, being easier to work with and dry quickly so that you can complete your project in a day.

Alkyd paints are no longer as prevalent as they used to be, what with water-based paints providing comparable performance and superior dry time.  But there are some areas where an alkyd coating is needed, like sealing in smoke and fire damage, strong odours embedded in a surface, or priming over certain exterior products.  If you are painting wood doors, it also helps to prime with oil to seal in the tannin stains and prevent them from bleeding through.  These stains won’t always be stopped by water-based products, it’s best to do it once and never have any problems.

Paint sheen

Once you have a base in mind for your project, there is a range of sheens to consider next. Sheen refers to how shiny the paint will look once it is dried. Exterior and interior paints have five types of sheens or finishes, but it only really matters for performance when discussing the interior. Flat or matte is the least amount of sheen, which is best for ceilings and ideal for walls when using premium products like Regal or Aura. Eggshell has a moderate sheen which helps with durability and washability, this is the most commonly used for walls throughout your house, whether it be a living room or a bathroom.  Satin (or pearl) is slightly glossier than eggshell and can be used on walls, but also on doors and trims.

Semi-gloss is the ideal choice of doors and trims, because it allows the colour on the walls to really be accepted, and provides a nice contrast to the comparatively flatter walls.

Find inspiration with these Benjamin Moore Paint Colours!

Interior vs exterior

Interior paints can be highly specialized, some are made to resist scuffs and marks and are easier to clean.  Some are extra thick and have fast recoat times to ensure better coverage and performance.  Exterior paints are differentiated by their solar fade resistance and coverage and durability, with sheen serving as more of an aesthetic choice rather than being hardier.  Also, certain exterior products are designed to go over numerous surfaces without a primer, such as stone, stucco, brick, and even some metals like aluminum.

Paint Supplies in Edmonton

Benjamin Moore Pinnacle South provides a full range of primers, interior and exterior paint, wood stains and specialty options. They also offer a wide range of supplies, including brushes, rollers, tape, and everything you need for a successful DIY paint job. In addition, their team can help you pick the perfect colour to ensure a quality paint job that lasts for years and looks great.

Top 3 home renovations to improve your home

A home renovation is a great way to improve your quality of life at home. If your rooms are not meeting your needs or bringing you joy, you may need a change. Basements, kitchens, and bathrooms are three of the most common renovations. Any one of these remodels has the potential to make your home a more functional and enjoyable place to be.

A & A Home Repair Services in Oshawa are a residential construction company specializing in home renovations.

1. Basement renovation

If your house doesn’t have enough space for your needs, you generally have three options: move, build a new home addition, or renovate your basement. Moving is a hassle and can mean leaving a neighbourhood you love. Home additions are expensive and may be impossible if you live on a small lot. On the other hand, basement remodels can be done on a much smaller budget. Moreover, it’s easier to gain more square footage on your existing property.

With the help of an experienced contractor, you can turn your basement into a functional, liveable, and enjoyable space. Consider a separate area for guests, extra bedrooms for a growing family, a suite for in-laws, a home theatre, a built-in bar, or another lounge for entertaining.

2. Kitchen renovation

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where families and friends meet to eat, catch up, study, and spend quality time. Therefore, your kitchen must be an enjoyable place to be. It should also be functional, visually appealing, and meet your needs.

Is your kitchen outdated, dark, or poorly designed? Are your appliances unreliable and energy inefficient? Then it’s time for a remodel. A kitchen renovation brightens and modernizes the space, turning it into the perfect hub for your lifestyle. By carefully designing the layout, including ample storage, and choosing beautiful lighting, you can transform your kitchen into an attractive and functional space. Additionally, upgrading to energy-efficient appliances can help you save on your monthly utility bills.

3. Bathroom renovation

Bathrooms are either a zen place to take a relaxing bath or a room you want to evacuate immediately. A bathroom renovation can make all the difference! Reinventing your bathroom is possible with beautiful design, attractive lighting, and modern features. As bathrooms are often the smallest room in your house, it’s essential to use the space wisely. A good layout is key! Check out these bathroom layout tips and ideas.

Bathroom remodels can be complicated. There is plumbing to consider and potential water damage to deal with if your bathroom has fallen into disrepair. However, an experienced home renovation company with design experts can help you navigate your remodel. Ultimately, your bathroom can be the perfect place to prepare yourself for the day or take refuge after a particularly long one.
