How to repoint a patio

Years of wear and tear have taken a toll on your back garden, and now, after a long and rainy winter, the state of your patio is more noticeable than ever. The grout between patio slabs has become loose, cracked and now weeds are growing out of the cracks.

Now, it’s time for a change. With the sun making its appearance once again, it is the perfect time to finally give your patio some attention. What better way to refresh your patio than to repoint the patio slabs?

What is repointing a patio?

Repointing your patio is an easy and cheap way to make your patio look brand-new once again but what does repointing mean? Repointing a patio means removing old grout and re-apply grout between patio slabs.

patio slabs need repointing

Who can repoint a patio?

Many people can repoint a patio – all you need is the right materials, enough free time (we would recommend a full weekend) and maybe a helping hand. Whether you don’t have enough spare time to complete this task or would prefer to get it done by a professional, our skilled team of tradesmen can undertake a variety of tasks to uplift your outdoors, from repointing patios to pressure washing paving stones and treating outdoor wooden furniture.

How often repoint patio?

There is no set rule on how often to repoint a patio or either when to repoint a patio. Different patio sealers will have different lifespans. There are many factors that will affect the lifespan of your patio grout, from weather conditions to how often you clean the patio and more.

The right time to repoint a patio will be when you have noticed that the mortar that held the slabs together has started to crack, crumbled away or is riddled with weeds.

What to use to repoint patio slabs?

There are a variety of ways to repoint patio slabs. Some of the most popular ways include:

  • Repointing patio with cement
  • Repointing patio with dry mix
  • Repointing patio with resin

Materials:

  • Cement
  • Pointing bar
  • Mixing bucket
  • Stirrer
  • Trowel
  • Soft brush
  • Gun injection equipment
  • Pointing trowel
  • Grout rake

How to:

Step 1 – Pressure wash patio.

Clean the patio slabs to remove any staining, moss and dirt.

Step 2. Remove old pointing.

Use a grout rake to remove old pointing. Do this in between all patio slabs. Sweep away any residue and dirt. You can pressure wash slightly again to remove the remaining dirt and make the joints damp.

Step 3 – Create mortar mix.

Follow the product’s instructions on how to create the right mortar mix. With the help of a trowel, load mortar mix into gun injection equipment. You might choose to do it without a gun, use a pointing trowel instead.

Step 4.  Push mortar inside the joints.

Push the mortar mix inside the slab joints. Any mortar that goes on the patio slabs can be wiped off with a clean damp sponge. Any extra bits of mortar can be brushed off.

Step 5 – Keep it damp.

Don’t let the mortar dry out too quickly. After you’ve pointed the patio, let it sit for a couple of hours (depending on the temperature). If you see the mortar starting to get quite light, make it damp with a fine mist of water using a hosepipe. The next day, make it damp again with a fine mist a couple of times a day.

Materials:

  • Cement
  • Sand
  • Grout rake
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Trowel
  • Broom

How to:

Step 1. Remove old grout.

Use a grout rake to remove old pointing. Do this in between all patio slabs. Sweep away any residue and dirt or use a vacuum cleaner to hoover any dirt or leftover residue more thoroughly.

Step 2 – Create dry mix.

Speak to a local professional for advice on the best dry mix ratio for your location. Mix it together until you have no crumbly bits of sand. You want to aim for a consistency that holds together when being squeezed. Use safety gloves when testing the consistency of your dry mix.

Step 3 – Push mix in.

Use a trowel to insert the dry mix into the joints of the slabs. Compact it down. Do this again until the mix is higher up and firmly compacted in. Use a brush to sweep any leftover dry mix over. Make sure to not leave any mix on top of the slabs as it might stain. Leave it to cure.

With a hosepipe, wet the whole patio and in between the joints.

Step 3 – Fill in joints and brush.

When to Replace Windows in Your Home

Replacing windows in your home can be an expensive and time-consuming process, but at some point, the benefits may outweigh the costs. There are many things to consider before you replace windows including budget, warranties, and aesthetics. In this blog, we’ll cover some common situations where replacing windows makes sense.

Age & Functionality

In general, it doesn’t make sense to replace windows unless they’re old or don’t do their job properly. If you’re constantly needing to prop open a window because it won’t stay open or it has developed gaps between the frame and wall, then it’s time to consider replacing that option. If a window is old or inefficient you should also consider replacing it.

Efficiency

In addition to age and functionality, you’ll also want to consider the efficiency of the windows in your home. Old, drafty windows are uncomfortable and tend to let more cold air into the home than they should. Newer more efficient windows can help reduce energy impacts while increasing your ability to use natural light in your home. In addition, if you have a history of high electricity bills or live in an area with extremely cold winters then you may want to consider upgrading your windows for improved efficiency and comfort.

Weather Damage

If you’re noticing that your windows are deteriorating or that they don’t provide adequate protection from the elements, it’s time to make the decision to replace them. Depending on your living situation and where you live, there may also be a benefit to replace windows as part of a larger home improvement project. For example, if you need to replace an entire side of your home due to water damage then a window replacement can help with some of the new construction costs and give you added functionality once that portion is finished.

All about ceiling renovations

During the planning and decision-making of a renovation, it’s easy to forget about the 5th wall in your home. The ceiling often gets ignored or left with a simple white paint job, and that’s it. While functional, there are many other options and ways to approach a ceiling renovation.

Stampede Drywall Ltd. in Calgary is a professional drywall contractor company. They share what you need to know about doing a ceiling renovation:

Helps with soundproofing

When you want to reduce noise or improve acoustics in your home, the ceiling is a great place to start. Rooms like a playroom, hobby room, or even a basement will benefit from a quieter space. Ceiling renovations can help do just that with either a false ceiling or a lath and plaster method.

False ceilings are fitted ceilings that hang just below the actual one. They help create the illusion of a lower ceiling and are also well insulated and excellent for soundproofing. Lath and plaster is another method used on traditional ceilings. The material alone is great for dampening noises, and the flexible material can be used to create customized designs.

Creative design

Why stick with a plain white ceiling with a generic appearance when you can spruce it up and add visual appeal? If your ceiling is an old popcorn ceiling, it’s a great time to make a change. Popcorn ceilings tend to collect more dust and dirt, and the design of the pattern makes the room feel smaller. It’s also hard to clean and maintain compared to other ceilings. Knock-down ceilings, however, are much more appealing. The pattern creates a stuccoed appearance and is one of the most common textures. It’s a great way to add depth and visual interest to a room, and it helps hide any blemishes.

A cove cornice steppe is a way to go for a touch of luxury or old classic appeal. This decorative crown moulding creates a clean-cut design that protects the ceiling and adds interest. Some can even be paired with ceiling lights to really add that dramatic flair to your home. Find inspiration with these ceiling design ideas.

Consider the cost

Remember that ceiling renovations can be expensive and aren’t meant to be a DIY project. The old ceiling pattern will need to be removed, surface prepared, and then the new ceiling installed. If you create a custom look, extra work and time will be involved. Then, in most cases, the new ceiling will require painting or finishing to complete the look. That said, a well-handled ceiling renovation will add lasting value and appeal to your home or room. Working with a skilled contractor will also ensure the job is handled professionally and with the best quality materials and results. Your new ceiling can help open up the space while drastically improving the look and feel of the room.

Roof maintenance to do in the spring

Winter can wreak havoc on your home, including your roof. Connect with a professional roofer this spring if you were on the fence about a roof replacement last fall or suspect your roof might need repair or maintenance after a long winter.

First Class Roofing and Renovations in Calgary offers residential and commercial roofing and residential services. They share suggestions for taking care of your roof this upcoming spring.

Check the gutters

Everything on your roof drains into the gutters when all the snow melts in the warmer weather. In addition, debris like leaves and twigs could’ve blown into the gutters last fall. Ensuring your gutters are clean and clear of debris is critical. If the roof’s drainage system doesn’t work correctly, water will fall off the roof’s edge and pool around your foundation. This flooding can cause foundation damage and eventually penetrate into the basement. Clean the gutters, get them repair or replaced if damaged, and help protect your home from potential water damage.

Inspect your shingles

Spring is the time to take a close look at the condition of your shingles. If you’re not comfortable getting up on a ladder, contact First Class Roofing for a professional roof inspection. They will provide a detailed inspection of your shingles, flashing, vents, and drainage system to ensure everything is in good working order. Catching minor issues early will help prevent significant damage or the need for a roof replacement down the road. In addition, they’ll make suggestions for repairs, or, if your roof is aged and no longer protecting your home, suggest a roof replacement.

Protect your home with a new roof

Curling, missing, or peeling shingles is a tell-tale sign that you need a new roof. If your roof is older, or you suspect a water leak, do not delay. Connect with First Class Roofing as soon as possible to inspect the problem. Spring and summer storms are a sure thing in Calgary, and you want to make sure your home is protected. Investing in a roof replacement will boost curb appeal, help you maintain property value, and prevent costly damage to your home. First Class Roofing offers high-quality roofing products, expert installation, and peace of mind knowing your new roof was installed to last.

Choosing between custom cabinets or cabinet refacing

If you’re renovating the kitchen, you have several options for improving your cabinets. For example, if your cabinets are still in good shape but you want a new look, cabinet refacing is a cost-effective option. On the other hand, you might choose custom cabinets if you want a significant change with customized features, additional storage, and enhanced function. Learn about the difference between replacing and refacing cabinets.

TSN Cabinets in Edmonton offers cabinetry services for your home renovation. They can help you to choose between custom cabinets or refacing.

Choosing custom cabinets

One of the biggest reasons to install custom cabinets is that it allows you to customize your space. For example, custom cabinets are a great idea if you want to revamp the kitchen’s layout or require additional storage that your current cabinets provide. You might want things like glide-out shelving, built-in spice racks, wine racks, and other custom features. With custom cabinets, your options are endless.

Custom cabinets are also a good idea if you want to completely change the style and design of your home. They allow you to choose everything from the wood and materials used to the door styles and other functional features.

Custom cabinets are strong, durable, and high-quality. While a more considerable investment than cabinet refacing, they’ll last for decades and can always be refinished if you decide to change their look. Plus, custom cabinets will improve your home’s value and make your home a market contender if you decide to sell in the future.

Opting to reface your existing cabinets

Cabinet refacing is an excellent option to investigate for your home if your cabinets are still in good condition and you like your kitchen’s layout. This alternative offers a cost-effective modernization of your kitchen and can save up to 50% compared to a complete cabinet replacement.

Cabinet refacing is a simple process: it replaces the cabinet doors and drawer fronts while keeping the cabinet box. Contractors will apply a veneer to the exposed panels to match the look of the new doors. You can choose from an endless selection of door styles, materials, and colours. Essentially, cabinet refacing will give you a fresh look without the expensive price tag.

Another great reason to look at cabinet refacing is that it’s environmentally friendly. You’re reducing waste by keeping your current cabinet boxes that would otherwise end up in a landfill. No significant demolition is required, and that means less mess too. Cabinet refacing is also quick and efficient, reducing the renovation time and the disruption to your home life.

Cabinets in Edmonton

TSN Cabinets offer a wide selection of the finest custom cabinets featuring high-quality stains, distressed effects and brilliant new colours. They can provide custom cabinets for your kitchen, bathroom vanity, custom closet, and other areas of your home or business. They also offer professional cabinet refacing services for a cost-effective home upgrade. With quality products, expert workmanship, and courteous customer service, start your kitchen renovation with TSN Cabinets.

Four electrical improvements to make during your reno

A great time to have your electrical system inspected is during a home renovation. You’re likely installing new fixtures for the renovation, and a renovation often provides easier access to wiring. While you’re renovating, consider that there are plenty of ways to improve your home’s electrical system to suit modern-day requirements.

Raj Electrical Services in Edmonton offers general contracting and electrical services. They share four ways to improve your home’s electrical system during a renovation:

Install more outlets

If you’re using extension cords as a long-term solution, you should install more electrical outlets. Extension cords are meant for temporary use. Using them as permanent wiring creates fire and tripping hazards. Instead, have an electrician like Raj Electrical Services install additional outlets in that room. They can make recommendations for outlet placement, upgrade the circuit if necessary, and even install USB outlets for a device charging station.

Upgrading your panel

If you’re installing things in your home that require a more significant electrical pull, you’ll need to upgrade your panel. For example, things like hot tubs, new appliances, and electric vehicle charging stations can require upgrading to a 200 AMP service. In addition, if you are limited on existing space to add circuits for improvements, then a service change is needed.

If you live in an older home, it’s worth having your electrical system and panel inspected. Older panels often don’t have enough capacity to accommodate modern electrical consumption. Raj Electrical Services can check your panel and service, ensure everything is in safe and working order, and make recommendations for an upgrade to better meet your needs. Read more about how electrical service panels have changed over the years.

Make things safer with GFCI outlets

Outlets located near a water source, like a sink or outdoor tap, should be Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters will instantly stop power in the event of a ground fault. For example, if you have a hairdryer plugged into a GFCI outlet and you accidentally drop it in the sink, the outlet will detect an interruption in the current and cut power. They are crucial for reducing electrocution and injury. While these are standard in newer homes, older homes might not have them. Upgrading to these outlets is a simple way to improve safety in your home.

Improving the existing wiring

Depending on the age of your home, you might need to improve your existing wiring. Older homes had different electrical standards than we do now and might not withstand typical use. A home renovation is a perfect time to deal with this issue and ensure that your home has reliable power. Faulty wiring can be a significant safety issue, so make sure to deal with it sooner than later.

5 Reasons Your Home Needs a Bathroom Upgrade

Your bathroom is one of the most used rooms in your home. It goes through a lot of wear and tear, so it’s likely to develop some problems. You may also decide that it looks outdated compared to the rest of your home.

A bathroom upgrade can make a world of difference in your comfort levels. Here are five reasons you might need a new bathroom layout brought to you by Bathroom Brothers Renovations in Calgary.

1. Bathroom Upgrade

One of the top reasons to do bathroom renovations is if you want to install some new bathroom fixtures or upgrade what you currently own.

For example, you may decide to switch out your bathtub for a more modern shower. If you already own a shower, switching out the shower curtain for a shower door is an easy bathroom upgrade you can do on your own.

Not all of your bathroom upgrades have to be drastic, though. You’ll see improvements in your bathroom experience just by attaching a bidet accessory to your toilet.

2. Repair Damage

Water damage in a bathroom isn’t uncommon. Sources of water damage include toilets, leaky sinks, and excessive steam.

You can manage the damage by fixing your plumbing and repairing cracked or missing caulk. Excessive water damage provides a good opportunity to tear everything down and start over with a completely new bathroom.

3. Increase Property Value

Since the bathroom is one of the most important rooms in a home, it can make or break a future buyer’s decision to purchase. If there’s too much they need to change, they may go with another option.

Updating your bathroom increases the value of your home and has a high return on the overall investment, according to Remodeling Magazine. The most important changes include revamping the shower and installing eco-friendly options.

4. Make it Eco-Friendly and Efficient

Those who try to leave a smaller carbon footprint in their daily lives should look into installing water-efficient fixtures in their bathrooms. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the country could save more than 3 trillion gallons of water every year if everyone installed them.

Low-flow products can reduce energy and water use, and save money on your utility bill.

5. Safety Concerns

If you’re a person who has difficulty moving or positioning yourself in a bathroom, you can upgrade it with fixtures that can help. Grab bars and railings can be installed around the shower, bathtub, and toilet. Add non-slip mats or tiles to prevent falls.

Replace your bathtub with a walk-in shower for easier access and adjustability. You can place a shower seat inside for anyone that needs to sit down while bathing.

Bathroom Contractors in Calgary

A homeowner doesn’t need a big reason, like water damage, to make a bathroom upgrade. Something as simple as the desire for expanded storage is more than enough.

Not sure how to get started? Reach out to your local bathroom experts, Bathroom Brothers. We operate in the Calgary area and offer same-day bathroom renovation services.

Breaking up Spaces with Open Shelves

Breaking up spaces with open shelves is a great way to add some character and liveliness to any room. It is an effective way to store your books, glasses, and other knick-knacks in a space-saving manner. An open shelf also gives your room an appealing look when full of colorfully arranged objects and displays. Here are three ways in which you can use open shelves:

  1. Display decorative items: Punch up any wall in your living room with some whimsical decorations such as colorful vintage books or family photographs. These items will add interest and create a cozy atmosphere for your home without having to purchase expensive pieces of art or furniture.
  2. Use some color: A simple shelving unit that is open and exposed is perfect for adding pops of color in your living room. It looks great holding a variety of vases and bowls filled with brightly colored flowers or other plants. You can also use this type of shelving to hold colorful books.
  3. Keep things off the floor: If you have hardwood floors, an open shelving unit is the perfect way to keep items such as books and magazines off the floor. It’s a stylish way to keep things tidy in your living room and it will cut down on clutter all over your house. By keeping your living room items off the floor, you will be able to save money on cleaning supplies and will also be able to get more comfortable as you sit on your sofa.

Not every room can accommodate open shelves. If you live in a space with limited floor space, you should use this technique in spaces that have high ceilings; otherwise, it might result in an uncomfortable view of the ceiling when only half of the shelf is visible. In this case, you can use shelves that are closed at the top to create more height without making your living room feel cluttered or narrow.

When deciding on how many shelves to purchase for your apartment or house open shelves can work wonders. You can choose from a variety of different shapes and sizes. For example, you could go with a basic rectangular shape that fits comfortably in your living room. Or you could opt for a more decorative shelf and fill it with pictures and multi-colored books that fit your home’s theme. No matter what type of shelving unit you choose, having an open shelving technique in your living room will provide the perfect solution for displaying items without taking up any floor space in your home.
