Simple changes in details and interiors can make a huge difference when it comes to redesigning your kitchen. You know the saying, “less is more” – this stands true when you’re coming up with kitchen reno ideas. The experts at Can Do More Painting – Renovation & Design share some helpful insights.

If your kitchen has a solid foundation, a structured design, and a few elements, then all you have to do is make small changes to the space, and you will have a brand-new kitchen. In this article, we will tell you how to update your kitchen on a budget.

1. Cabinet Refinishing

Spruce up your kitchen cabinets by simply repainting, restaining, or applying fresh lacquer to the cabinetry. If the existing colour is white, you can choose to freshen them up and use a vibrant hue like blue or teal on the island. While refinishing the cabinets, you may want to consider painting the walls, trim, or ceiling too. Check out the website Calgary Residential Painting by Can Do More Painting for more details on interior painting.

2. New Countertops

Bring more life to your kitchen by replacing the old countertops with new and upgraded ones. This will completely transform the way you work in the kitchen. There are numerous options for countertops that you can choose from: natural stone like quartz and granite or even a natural slab of wood. Depending on your living situation and the functionality of the space, a kitchen remodelling expert will guide you on the sort of countertop that is suited to your preference.

3. Invest in a Backsplash

The backsplash was traditionally used to protect the walls from grease splatter and spills. Today, the backsplash has become an important kitchen detail that not only makes your space more stylish but is a great way to incorporate material and a bit of personality. You can get backsplash tiles in whatever material you want. If you want to keep your kitchen modern-looking, we suggest a chevron installation pattern if you’re looking for a more Bohemian vibe, then patterned ceramic tiles are the ideal choice. If you want to go for a timeless option, we recommend getting a simpler pattern.

4. Hardware Details

An efficient way of upgrading your kitchen is by simply changing the hardware and fixtures, like handles, knobs, sink taps, and even lighting fixtures can make all the difference. A popular design element seen in modern kitchens is the detachable sink faucet with a hose – it makes washing dishes easy and uplifts the overall look of the kitchen. Depending on the sort of look you want for your kitchen, you can try upgrading the lighting – gold, black, and rose gold lighting will glam up your space, but if you want to keep the kitchen cozy and moody, you can opt for chic shades in neutral tones.

Final Thoughts

The possibilities of kitchen renovations are endless. With so many kitchen redesign ideas to choose from, you can get the kitchen of your dreams with a few simple upgrades. To get the best deals and ideas, contact the experts at Can Do More Painting – Renovation & Design.

Kitchen reno ideas like minor cabinet modifications, new countertops, and backsplash, and upgrading your hardware fixtures can give a brand-new look to your kitchen. How to repair holes in plasterboard

Are you looking to move out of your current house soon but need to cover some holes left by fitting shelves on the drywall? Perhaps your kid was playing football in his room and now a hole in the wall has magically appeared? Maybe you created a beautiful gallery wall with all your favourite picture frames but now want to sell the house and need to fill holes left by the picture frames?

No matter why you have holes in plasterboard, no matter how they go there… Today, to help you make your drywall look brand new once again by explaining how to repair holes that might or might not have “magically” appeared.

Good to know.

Before you get started, it’s important to lay protective sheets to cover the floor and furniture plus, turn off any radiators in the room so that the plaster doesn’t dry too quickly. If you ever need an extra pair of hands during this task, don’t hesitate to contact our team. Our decorators in London can repair plasterboards, fill cracks in walls, fix ceiling cracks, paint rooms and much more.

What you’ll need:

    • Stud finder
    • Measuring tape
    • Pencil
    • Retractable knife
    • Spirit level
    • Plasterboard pieces
    • Screw
    • Adhesive
    • Plaster repair filler
    • Trowel
    • Sandpaper
    • Paint

Draw a rectangle shape around the hole.

Use a stud finder to check the area around the hole to ensure it’s safe to cut through the plasterboard. You’ll need to draw and cut out a rectangle or square around the hole. Use the measuring tape to make sure the shape is even. Cut the shape you have marked on the wall.

Cut plasterboard piece to size.

Mark the measurements of the rectangular/square shape onto a piece of plasterboard. Add an extra 25mm on top and bottom of the plasterboard piece and cut with a retractable knife. Push a screw through the middle of the plasterboard piece.

Apply plasterboard piece to the wall.

Apply adhesive to the 25mm extra on top and bottom of the plasterboard piece. Slide this through the hole in your wall and into position. Pull the screw towards you to help create a strong bond between the adhesive and the surface. Once it has dried enough, you can push the screw into the wall. Leave it to dry completely.

Apply plaster repair filler.

Mix a plaster repair filler according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply filling into the hole until the gap had been fully filled. Use a trowel to get the surface as flat as possible. Let it dry.

Smooth it out and paint.

Use sandpaper to create a smooth and level finish. Finally, paint the surface to match the colour of your wall.

Important details for soundproofing your home

Do you want to soundproof areas of your home? Whether you want to block the noise from basement suite renters or keep things quiet for children sleeping in their bedrooms, developments in material composition can provide more options for lowering sound transmission. Soundproofing is a big job, and there are many details to consider.

Exceptional Drywall Contractor in Surry is an experienced drywall contractor specializing in soundproofing. They share some things to consider when lowering sound transmission in a home:

Use the right materials

Soundproofing can be done through drywalling, but it’s essential to use suitable materials to do so. Installing a double layer of traditional drywall, or using more specialized products, can have an effect. Newer soundproofing drywall products have been specially created to have sound-dampening qualities through their composition. A mixture of compounds in the inner layer of the drywall makes them more resilient and less transmissible to sound waves. There are varying classifications for drywall panels, so choose a material with a higher Sound Transmission Class.

Be strategic where you use it

Drywalling is a messy business and can be costly to do an entire house. If you are only concerned about noise coming from specific areas, consider soundproofing those. For example, you might want to soundproof your home theatre room to reduce noise blasting through the rest of the house. In this instance, you’ll want Exceptional Drywall Contractor to soundproof the walls and ceiling if the theatre is on the lower level. There are also options for reducing noise transmission through doors that could be helpful depending on your specific needs.

Hire a professional

As mentioned above, there are many different materials used when drywalling, especially for soundproofing. Therefore, DIYers should not attempt significant drywall projects. You’ll need the right materials, product and installation knowledge, equipment, and experience with fastening, mudding, taping, and sanding. Without the correct tools, advanced skills, and knowledge, you won’t achieve flawless and long-lasting results. Plus, mistakes can be costly and time-consuming to fix. If you want to soundproof areas of your home, or are renovating and need drywall installation, always hire an experienced company like Exceptional Drywall Contractor.

As the name suggests, Exceptional Drywall Contractor offers exceptional drywall services to Surrey and the Lower Mainland. They specialize in drywall installation for new builds, home renovations and specialize in soundproofing projects. Their level five drywall finish will produce a smooth, seamless, perfect finish every time.

Three renovation ideas that will improve your home

When it comes to home, there are always things that can be done to improve it. What worked for one owner might not work for you, so consider making changes to be more comfortable. From a change in floor plan to increasing windows, your home should be exactly what you want it to be.

LJH Construction in Burnaby has three improvements you can make to improve your interior space:

Create an open-concept floorplan

The open floor plan layout is still reigning supreme as people continue to choose it in their homes. Older homes typically had designated spaces with walls dividing rooms like the kitchen, dining and living room. An open floorplan can make the space feel bigger. Natural light can pass from one end to the other, and you can keep an eye on your kids or entertain guests while preparing food in the kitchen.

Removing walls is a significant undertaking, and it’s not always possible. LJH Construction can inspect your home to determine if a wall can come out. They might have to install a load-bearing beam to ensure the renovation is structurally sound and compliant with building code. Depending on the scale of the renovation, this could be a costly undertaking. However, when you measure the lifestyle upgrade, years of enjoyment, and resale value it can add to your home, it is worth the investment.

Expand your kitchen

If you decide to remove some interior walls to improve your living space, think about how you can improve your kitchen. Doing both renovations at the same time is more cost and time-efficient. You can expand the kitchen by adding a pantry, increasing countertop space with an island, or improving the layout to help improve efficiency. Kitchen renovations have a great return on investment, and tackling that project while doing a major main floor renovation can save time and money in the long run.

Let the sunshine in by adding windows

If you feel like your home is dark and gloomy, adding extra windows can help. New windows can recoup a healthy 70 to 75 percent of their original cost, according to this article about renovations that pay off. When adding new windows to your home, consider upgrading the existing ones to energy-efficient models too. Because windows are responsible for a significant percentage of energy loss in the home, you want to make sure your new and existing windows have maximum thermal performance. Ask LJH Construction about putting in new windows, including skylights and patio doors.

Major Home Renovations in Burnaby

LJH Construction offers residential and commercial construction and renovation services. They can help you with design and budget decisions, and show your options for quality products. They’ll provide a schedule for your construction project, and keep you in the loop throughout the entire process. If you’re ready to build or renovate your home, trust the professionals at LJH Construction.

Importance of legal contracts for your home and concrete repair

Hiring the right contractor for any home project can feel like a stressful process. First, you must ensure they’re experienced, qualified, and stand by their work. They need a legitimate business license, insurance and provide you with a written and legally binding contract. Understanding contract law and what to look for in a concrete repair contractor will help ensure quality, longevity, and safety.

VokeStone Crowns in Didsbury is a professional concrete repair and garage floor coatings company. They give important advice when hiring a concrete repair contractor to work on your property.

Start with a written estimate

Before starting any concrete repair project, get a written estimate for the work. An estimate should include the project timeline, the materials, labour, additional fees related to the project. It will have a detailed description of the work, and the total cost. A reputable contractor will take the time to explain each item on their estimate and be transparent about any expenses that could arise during the project. Any company that cannot provide these details, and in writing, is not worth hiring.

Check for insurance

The next important step in legal contractor work is to check for insurance. A contractor should have WCB coverage, public liability, and property damage coverage. That will protect against any legal action if there is an injury on the jobsite. It will also protect you from damages that might occur to your property during the work. If you don’t have legal protection and liability coverage, you could be held responsible if there is an accident, damage, or injury on the job site. It is your right to see proof of insurance before allowing a concrete repair contractor to work on your property.

Get a written contract

You should be provided with a written contract. A reputable contractor will not settle for a verbal agreement. They are easy to misinterpret, forget, change, or break without legal consequences. A written contract protects both you and the contractor. Not only can it be legally binding if issues arise, but it sets expectations for both parties. A contract is like the foundation for your project. The written contract should include the scope of work, timelines, materials, costs, need for permits, fees, and process details. It gives you a clear idea of how they’ll execute your concrete repair. You’ll know the results you can expect, and how much it will cost. Ensure you read it over carefully, and ask your contractor any questions you might have until you feel comfortable.

Put it in writing if you need to change anything in the contract. Changes can happen as a project gets underway. For example, if unforeseen issues arise during your concrete repair and the project cost needs adjusting, make sure the adjustment is in writing first. Then sign it again. That way, any changes or alterations are always on paper. Both parties must approve it, and the entire process remains transparent.

Trust VokeStone Crowns

VokeStone Crowns prides itself on concrete repair, including recovering flooring. They turn uneven and damaged floors into smooth, flat surfaces that are attractive, durable, and value-adding. Unlike traditional concrete contractors, VokeStone uses a chemical reaction in their application which guarantees a long-lasting and sound concrete floor. Cost-Effective Ways to Enhance a Bathroom with Fixtures

Bathrooms are often ignored when it comes to interior design; they usually remain untouched, with the exception of a new coat of paint. However, providing your bathroom with fixtures that are cost-efficient provides more than just an aesthetic update. Once you have added your new fixtures, you will have something wonderful to show off and use. Furthermore, these affordable additions can even save you money in the long run by going green with eco-friendly products and saving space in your home. With all that being said – here is our rundown of some cost-effective ways to enhance a bathroom with fixtures.

Start with the Faucet

One of the most important parts of your bathroom is the faucet. A good faucet can help you save water, especially if you get a low-flow faucet. Furthermore, a faucet that looks great could be all you need to update your bathroom to a modern style. If your plumbing isn’t working well or there is trouble with the valves, you should have your pipes looked at by a professional before you purchase anything new for your sink. Replacing an entire sink just for cosmetic reasons is usually not worth it unless it is broken and needs to be replaced anyway.

Get an Energy Efficient Sink

Energy-efficient faucets aren’t just for the bathtub. A sink with an energy-efficient faucet can help you save water and money on your bills. If you are looking for a more affordable option, try getting a sink with a smaller basin. If you do not wash your hands often in the bathroom, a smaller basin is all you need and you can use the extra space for something else. You might also want to consider choosing a white porcelain sink instead of installing granite or marble. White porcelain sinks are much cheaper than other exotic materials and they are still durable.

Renovate Your Toilet

If you have a toilet that is difficult to use, you might want to consider replacing it. Luckily, there are many economical options for toilets. For example, you can get a toilet with an elongated bowl and seat lid that is perfect for people who lose their coordination every time they sit down to use the toilet. Another option is a bidet toilet seat that will create water streams in front of the user. If you are looking for something even cheaper, look into the aesthetic version of the bidet – a spray toilet. This device also saves water but you cannot use it to wash yourself.

How to paint skirting boards

Whether you want to make your skirting boards stand out with a bold colour or want to simply refresh them with a new lick of white paint, it’s essential to do it properly. Badly painted skirting boards will be an eyesore that you won’t be able to unsee. So, to make sure you end up with lovely freshly painted skirting boards, follow our guide below.

Need some help?

Before we get started, let us remind you that it’s okay to ask for a second pair of hands. You might have even already started painting your skirting boards and are now wondering if a professional should be doing it instead – your choice! At the Handy Squad, our London decorators can help with this task if you need some help. Our professional painters and decorators will be able to paint skirting boards or any other surface you require.

What you’ll need:

    • Cleaning solution
    • Sponge
    • Sandpaper
    • Primer
    • Paint
    • Paint brush
    • Dust sheet
    • Masking tape

Picking the right colour.

The rule of thumb when it comes to skirting boards is to go for colours that match the tone of your walls. Contrasting colours can also be used for a visually interesting detail. Darker skirting boards are a modern alternative to light and more traditional skirting boards. If you want to refresh your skirting boards but don’t want to paint them outright, why not use some gloss instead?

Can you paint skirting boards with wall paint?

Technically yes, wall paint can be used to paint skirting boards. However, it’s very important to sand the skirting board when using wall paint. For an optimal result, it is recommended to use skirting board paint.

Paint walls while you are at it.

While you are thinking of painting your skirting boards, why not paint your walls as well? I’m sure you haven’t re-painted your walls in a while – they could use a new coat of paint too! If you are considering painting your walls as well, remember to paint walls first and then skirting boards. The main rule when painting is to start at the top and work your way down.

Prepare skirting boards.

Clean the skirting boards and any other surface you are going to paint. Any dust, grease and dirt should be removed. Then, lightly sand the surface with sandpaper and wipe down the dust.

Tip: If you are painting skirting boards right above the carpet, tape down a dust sheet as close to the skirting board as possible.

Paint the skirting boards.

Once the skirting boards are fully clean and dry, it’s time to tape the edges with painter’s tape and prime the surface. Let the primer dry. Next, apply the first coat of paint and apply it the same way as the primer. Check on the paint tin how many coats you should use. Let paint dry in between coats. When you are done painting, remove the masking tape and let the paint dry completely.

Should I upgrade my attic insulation?

If your home is a few decades old, you’ve likely inherited low-performing attic insulation. Energy to heat or cool a home was cheap back in the day. We knew less about carbon emissions, and building homes to be energy efficient wasn’t a priority. Things have certainly changed.

Retrofitting your home’s insulation will translate to sizeable energy savings. That upgrade starts in the attic. Advanced Insulation in Winnipeg shares more:

How do I know I need an attic insulation upgrade?

High energy expenses and uneven temperatures are usually signs that your attic insulation isn’t doing its job. Both result from thin, uneven, and inefficient attic insulation and can cause a lot of strain on your heating and cooling system.

The age of your home will tell you if you need an attic insulation upgrade too. For example, homes built in the 1970s will have inefficient saw-dust or paper-like insulation with very low R-values. If you’ve never had an upgrade, you’re already losing a lot of energy through the roof!

Ice dams are also a tell-tale sign your attic insulation and ventilation need upgrading. Ice dams are when ridges or blocks of ice form on the roof due to constant melting and freezing. Heat is escaping through the roof and causing the melt. Ice dams can block water and snow, impede drainage, and damage your eavestroughs, fascia, and soffits.

What kind of attic insulation should I get?

Advanced Insulation recommends blown-in loose-fill insulation or spray foam, or a combination of the two. Loose-fill is resistant to mould and is made of non-flammable recycled material.

Spray foam has incredible thermal performance and works well in those hard-to-reach spaces. It works as an insulator, vapour barrier and can be sprayed directly on the roof deck in sloped attics.

What about ventilation?

Some insulation contractors will “top up” your attic insulation by blowing new insulation over the old material. However, older attics typically lack proper ventilation, vapour barriers, or even have leaks that allow warm moist air from the house into the attic. So that top-up might not do the trick without also addressing those issues.

If you change the attic’s temperature from warm to cold without addressing the leaks, you’ll get excess condensation build-up on the underside of the roof. This condensation will freeze, eventually, melt, and cause ‘attic rain.’ This cycle can occur several times during the winter, and that melt and rain will damage your roof, insulation, and ceiling.

The ventilation needs upgrading to complement your insulation installation. Advanced Insulation will also ensure the attic is sealed by checking bathroom fans, plumbing stacks, pot lights, and other fixtures that might leak. Once that is addressed, your new insulation and ventilation will keep the heat in and the moisture out! Read more information about attic ventilation.

Customer Feedback

Our hot water tank went in the middle of house renovations. So that was a tad stressful. I honestly have to say that Rocky Mountain Plumbing made it so much easier.

Everything about this company is professional. From the estimate, to the installation, to the invoicing. And they actually know what they are talking about. One company I called could not figure out what kind of water tank we had from the serial number. But I am glad I called around because now I know what quality service is. And next time I will know who to call first – Rocky Mountain Plumbing. You guys are the best.

Hot water again!! Thank you so much.

4 ways Ottawa masonry contractors can help with your home

Brick, natural stone, concrete, or other stone products can add protection, durability, energy efficiency, and visual appeal to your home. Stone is fire-proof, bug-proof, and will never rot. In most cases, it’s easy to clean and maintain. Whether you’re building a brick house, installing natural stone cladding, or pouring concrete for your garage floor, it’s a great choice.

Canadian Masonry Services in Ottawa are a locally owned and operated company that offers a range of masonry services to residential and commercial clients. Here are some ways they can help you improve your home.

Stone masonry, inside and out

For the average homeowner, stone masonry refers to installing stone veneer to the exterior or interior walls. For example, you can add stone to your home’s exterior as cladding, pillars, plant boxes, and other features. In addition, stone masonry can create visual appeal with stone fireplaces, seats, and feature walls for the interior of your home.

You choose the type of stone you’d prefer, and they’ll complete the work efficiently and professionally. Stone masonry adds value, aesthetics, and efficiency and is an excellent option for new builds and home renovations.

Concrete repair

If your concrete garage floor is cracked and damaged, you don’t have to splurge on an entirely new floor. Canadian Masonry Services provides repair services for your garage floor, steps, patios, and walkways. They offer a range of solutions, including resurfacing the concrete with a thin and durable polymer-modified cement layer.

If your concrete garage floor is cracking, it could be an issue with the base under the floor. In this case, Canadian Masonry Services will create a stronger base to protect your new floor from future cracks.

Spalling brick repair

Moisture penetration and the freeze-thaw cycle are common causes for decaying, peeling, flaking, and weathering bricks. Acid rain, salts, and other natural occurrences can also damage your bricks. These issues can cause the bricks to crack, crumble, or produce a white bloom of tiny crystals called efflorescence. Whether it’s on the side of your house, retaining wall, or chimney, Canadian Masonry Services can restore the brick.

Restored a 200-year-old chimney to today’s standard.

They’ll also try to get to the root of the issue, so it doesn’t happen again. For example, it could be trimming a bush or moving a shed to redirect water and moisture away from the brick. If other building materials cause the problem, they can suggest replacing your bricks with a more durable product. Learn more about spalling bricks.

Chimney repair

The freeze-thaw cycle can do a number on your chimney brick as well. If you’ve noticed your chimney bricks look like they’re flaking or crumbing, contact your masonry contractor for a repair. Canadian Masonry Services can evaluate your chimney’s situation and provide the best solution for its repair. Unfortunately, most chimney degradation is a result of faulty chimney crown construction. When you work with Canadian Masonry Services, they’ll provide a 5-year warranty on their chimney caps.
