Transforming your front yard with landscape design

Transforming your front yard with landscape design

When it comes to landscape projects, it’s often the backyard that gets the most attention. While it certainly adds value and living space, don’t ignore your front yard. The front yard plays a crucial role in boosting curb appeal, adding aesthetic design, and adding great overall value.

Jovak Landscaping & Design in Chilliwack is a professional landscape and design company. They share some landscape design tips to transform your front yard.

Pick a focal point

The front of your house has a lot of interesting visuals, which makes creating a focal point important. Typically, the front door acts as that point with a bright and eye-catching colour. If that is the case in your home, don’t feel you have to darken the door to create a focal landscape. Instead, work with the look and complement the space. For example, plant bushes around the steps to the door and add colourful plants that complement any existing colours. That way, you get both a focal point through your landscape while still complimenting your home’s existing appeal.

Add some architecture

You don’t have to overhaul your entire yard, but adding some architecture is always visually interesting. For example, build up your flower bed with a stone border or with a retaining wall. The different height levels will add more interest and depth to your yard than a uniform and flat space. If you have a large and spacious front yard, install a pathway leading up to your front door and plant bushes or accent trees along the way. It’ll add a natural sense of charm to the layout, and the path will help naturally draw the eye to your home.

Plant colourful trees

If you want to add some trees to your front yard, don’t limit yourself to classic green trees. While the look is always a nice touch, you can’t go wrong by choosing colourful trees instead. For example, Dogwood or Japanese Maple both produce bright pink leaves, or birch trees turn a stunning yellow in the fall. Fruit trees, like apple trees, produce small white flowers in the months before they produce apples. Others like crab-apple or holly trees keep their colourful fruit and berries for months for a natural contrast against their green leaves. If you need help, talk to your landscaper about the best trees for your needs and climate.

Light it up

Once you have your landscape design in place, don’t just enjoy the sights during the day. Landscape lighting is not only a great way to enjoy the sights at night, but it also helps with security. Lights along the path leading to your home make nighttime navigation easier, or you can highlight your flower beds or a certain tree. Integrated lights also seamlessly blend into the design, so you won’t know they are there until the lights go on.

Roof restoration vs replacement

Roof replacements add significant value and offer a fresh lifespan for your roof, but it is a costly investment. And, sometimes, a replacement doesn’t have to be the only choice. Restoring your roof can fix any minor issues and ensure it’s in place another few years.

Navco Construction Corp in Port Coquitlam is a professional exterior renovations company. They share when you should restore your roof vs replacing it.

What is restoration?

Restoration is often called “re-roofing.” The main difference between re-roofing and replacement is that the roofing material stays on the roof. Any minor issues are assessed and repaired, and then the roof is resurfaced. A replacement involves completely stripping the roof down and then reapplying all new materials and shingles. Overall, restoration is more affordable, less invasive, and improves your roof’s overall health and safety. Before you can restore your roof, though, it needs to be a good candidate.

Can you restore it?

The first step is to have a professional roofing contractor do a thorough inspection of your roof. They’ll check for the type of damage, its overall condition, and if there is any moisture damage. If the damage is minimal and only located in a small area, then restoration is possible and beneficial. Otherwise, more extensive and widespread damage will need a replacement instead. While more costly, a replacement is still beneficial and gives our roof maximum protection. It’ll also appeal to potential buyers who know they have a solid roof for the next 20-25 years.

When to replace?

If your roof isn’t a match for restoration, then a replacement is in order. Replacements are necessary when the roof has lived past its lifespan. Signs could be widespread curling and peeling shingles, missing shingles, and shingles that are missing granules. Also, if you have water penetrating the roof and the roof decking is damaged, a replacement is in order.

Leave it to a professional

Whether you choose to restore or replace, always talk to a professional first. An experienced exterior renovation company like Navco Construction can help you decide between a restoration or roof replacement. Once you decide which is the best option, they’ll handle all the work and ensure a high-quality installation. For a roof replacement, make sure to talk about colours and roof styles. The right look and type can not only boost value but can also help increase your home’s curb appeal.

Flooring: What You Should Know About Flooring Services

Completing a home improvement update is exciting work. If you are beginning to look for flooring services to complete that next step in your project, here is a resource to help you explore and learn what you should know about flooring services and installation. There are many kinds to pick from and consider so let’s get started.

Types of Flooring

Flooring comes in many different types, shapes, colors, patterns, textures, and more. You can tile a room with individual and unique tiles or install vinyl with the pattern in easy roll-out or tongue-and-groove boards. Explore your options and see what kind of flooring will work the best in your home.

  • Carpet
  • Tile
  • Stone
  • Eco-Friendly
  • Hardwood
  • Vinyl
  • Laminate

Different types of flooring come with different strengths and weaknesses. Begin by considering where and how you would like to use your flooring. This will help get the process started. Your lifestyle will determine the kind of flooring you need.

Your Flooring and Your Lifestyle

While you might have a specific kind of flooring in mind, there are a few things to think about if a certain style is for you.

  • If you have pets, consider scratch-resistant flooring.
  • Consider non-slip flooring for bathrooms and areas where the floor may get wet.
  • Consider the volume of traffic in the room being carpeted to pick out something durable.
  • Natural wood can be scratched or stained if accidents happen.
  • Laminate and vinyl can mimic traditional wood and stone patterns.

While there are many types of flooring to look at, professional flooring services will be able to help you understand the benefits and drawbacks of each type of flooring. Achieve the look you want without breaking the bank with some vinyl or laminate flooring or go traditional for that classic look of stone or wood flooring. No matter what, the choice is yours!

What colour to paint a room?

The first step to painting your room walls is to choose the right colour… and guess what? Choosing the right colour might affect your mood and how you feel inside the room. It all goes down to colour psychology.

Note: Reactions to colour are subjective. You might not particularly feel a specific way inside a room due to the colour used on the walls.

As Very Well Mind explains, while perceptions of colour are somewhat subjective, there are some colour effects that have universal meaning. For instance, warm colours, such as reds, oranges and yellows, can evoke emotions ranging “from feelings of warmth and comfort to feelings of anger and hostility.”

Blue tones.

Can evoke: relaxation, serenity and calmness.

Green tones.

Yellow tones.

Red tones.

Best for: dining room, bedroom and living room.

What’s the best way to paint a room?

After choosing the right colour, it’s time to start thinking about the positioning of colour. Which walls are you going to paint? Do you want your room to feel more elongated? Then, paint the ceiling and a feature wall. Do you want to shorten your room? Paint a feature wall only.

There’s no wrong or right way to paint a room but there are definitely ways to paint a room that will be better to follow when you want to achieve a specific look – it’s all about perception!

How to repair sash windows

Are your sash windows not staying up? Have you painted your sash windows and now your windows are stuck? Perhaps the cords on your sash windows are broken? These are some of the problems you might be experiencing with your sash windows. Today, to help you repair your sash windows, we will share some of the common issues with sash windows and how to fix them (or how to avoid them!).

modern white sash windows

1. Broken sash cords.

Over time, sash cords can become fragile due to wear and tear, which can lead to sash cords breaking or snapping. If this happens, you will need to replace the cords on your sash windows. You might choose to follow a guide our team has written in the past on how to replace a sash cord, or if you don’t feel confident undertaking this task, contact our London carpenters who will be able to replace the sash cords in a timely manner.

Related: Replacing the cord on a sash window.

2. Sash windows not staying up.

If your sash windows are not staying up, there might be a few things happening:

  • Sash weights are not balanced properly.
  • Wrong size weights.
  • Faulty component.
  • Components fell out of alignment.

If the sash window is heavier than the weights, it won’t stay open. If any of the window components have fallen out of alignment, it can lead to problems operating the window. So, it’s essential to inspect the sash window to figure out the problem and then assess the best way to deal with the issue. If there is a faulty component, it should be replaced.

3. Sash windows are stuck after painting.

So, you’ve painted over your sash window and now the window is stuck… it happens. You can easily unstick your window with a utility knife. Slide a utility knife along the edge of the window to gently break the paint seal. Then, gently loosen the window. Try raising the window – if it works, you’ve successfully opened a painted shut window.

In case you are still having issues with your sash windows, maybe it would be best to call a professional. At the Handy Squad, our team of experienced tradesmen can have a look at your sash windows, repair your windows and replace your sash windows. Book online today or get in touch with our team by calling 0800 0-12-12-12.

How to measure for a replacement door?

Has your kid been playing football inside and kicked the door by mistake? Has someone shut the door strongly and now it’s not closing properly? If you need to replace your door, it is essential that you choose the right door to fit into the door frame. To do this, measure the width, height and thickness of the existing door and then choose a door that matches your measurements. If you can’t find a door that exactly matches your measurements, round up them up and find the nearest door size.

Can doors be hung upside down?

Yes, doors can be accidentally hung upside down. For instance, if you are installing a four or six panelled door, it often has a taller horizontal style across the bottom of the door than it has on the top. Be sure to check the right way up before you install your door.

Which way should doors be hung?

There is no right or wrong way to install a door. There are preferable ways of hanging doors. As this article on Hunker explains, “The rule of thumb is to hang interior doors to open into the room, not out into a hallway or other common area”. This is done to prevent blocking hallways or other common areas.

Materials:

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Wood Plane
  • Hand Saw
  • Chisel
  • Hammer
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Wooden wedges
  • Hinges
  • Screws

How to:

Step 1. Measure and cut the new door to size. Lay the old door on top of the new door and mark any excess you will need to adjust on the new door. Hold the door in place using a workbench and cut the door to the required length with a saw. Test to see if fits the door frame.

Step 2. Get the door ready for the hinges. Hold the door up in the frame and mark the position of the existing hinge cutouts. Measure the thickness of the hinges and mark the depth with a pencil. Chisel the required area to create the hinge recess. Make several cuts and chisel in the same direction as the grain. Place the hinges in place and drill pilot holes.

Step 3. Hang the door on the frame. Place the door at 90° to the frame and place the wedges under the door. Fix one screw into the bottom hole of each hinge. Test the opening and closing of the door. Then, fasten the rest of the screws. Test the door one last time, and that’s it!

How to design a small deck with big value

Decks are a great outdoor addition that adds extra space, value and boost overall lifestyle quality. Most decks focus on a larger and more spacious design, but not all yards are so accommodating. If you have a small yard, designing a small deck with the right features can optimize and improve your space for outdoor living.

Shipley Construction in Edmonton is a professional general contractor that offers interior and exterior renovations. They share some design tips for building a small deck with big value:

Start with your needs

Like any deck design, start by thinking of what goals you have for your new deck. For example, is it a space to soak up some sun, entertain friends, or just eat outdoors now and again? If you like to entertain, you’ll want to plan a nook for that BBQ or grill without cramping any seating. Or focus on a layout that maximizes a cozy, intimate space for relaxation and comfort for a quiet reading spot. By starting with your wants and goals, you’ll be able to work with your contractor to create a design plan that meets them.

Make the design in sync

An essential part of good deck design is ensuring that the house, deck, and yard all look in sync. The best way to ensure that is by using similar materials or layouts when designing the addition. Focus on complementary paint colours or use the same dark work as your home to build the deck. That way, the two spaces will feel connected, have good flow, and not like two disjointed areas. Another tip is to build the deck where an opening is already available, like a back door or connection from the kitchen. Not only does it save extra construction costs, but you benefit from that sense of flow from the interior to the exterior living spaces.

Reduce visual clutter

Larger decks have more room for extra additions like privacy screens with plants, a set seating area, a snazzy grill and so on. With a small deck, you don’t have much room for such visual freedom. Too many additions and features will make the space feel cramped and cluttered. Instead, focus on what additions make the most sense or will have the most use. Add an arbour, for example, if you want a cozy setting, liven up your deck or incorporate some greenery. Or, you could create bar-like seating with a narrow table running along with one of the railings. Only add as much furniture as you will actually use or need for your family’s size.

General Contractors in Edmonton

Shipley Construction provides high-quality and stunning transformative renovations for both interior and exterior projects. Their team is fully trained, insured, and experienced in handling any project, big or small. Whether you’re upgrading the kitchen or putting in a new deck, you can trust the quality work and service provided by their skilled team.

Why hire a handyman?

Hiring a handyman is the best way to ensure that your task is completed quickly, efficiently and to the highest standard. While many choose to try their hand at their own DIY tasks, trying to complete certain tasks alone could prove too difficult, or even dangerous, for the average person. Handymen are trained in their craft and are a much better and safer alternative.

If you have any further questions about handymen and what they do, feel free to contact our team today. If you need help with any task or simply don’t have time to tackle it yourself, book our handymen today.
