Different kinds of concrete finishes

Different kinds of concrete finishes

Concrete is used commonly in construction, including in residential homes. While your concrete driveway might seem like the most obvious place for this durable material, you may be surprised at how many other places in and around your home can have concrete. From your driveway to front steps, walkways, and patio to pool decks and garage floors.

Concrete has also made its way into interior home renovations. Concrete flooring, while commonly used in commercial and retail applications, has become popular with home renovations. Concrete countertops are also a sleek, modern, and trendy choice for kitchen renovations.

No matter how you plan on using concrete to enhance your home, there are many different kinds of concrete finishes to consider. Before we get to that, let’s look at the benefits of concrete first.

Benefits of concrete

There are many benefits that come with concrete. It is durable and long-last material that can pass the test of time. Its smooth finish allows it to be cleaned easily, and that includes making snow shoveling easier in the wintertime. It can withstand our harsh weather, and often lasts longer than other materials like asphalt which tends to crumble and crack more easily.

Concrete is also versatile in style and design. Not only can you choose from many types of concrete finishes, but it can also be tinted to match a specific colour. Since it’s poured into a space when installed, you can design and pour concrete into any shape or size of space you desire.

Concrete is strong, but it can crack over time in winter climates. Cracks are caused mostly because of the freezing and thawing cycle. Fortunately, cracked and sinking concrete can be repaired, especially if it’s the early stages of the damage. To maintain it, just sweep it or spray it down with a pressure washer or garden hose.

Myths about concrete

Have you heard some bad things about concrete? Here are a few common myths about concrete that homeowners may mistake as fact:

Concrete is always grey

While grey may be the standard colour, your concrete doesn’t have to be. As you’ll see later on in the article, there are a few ways to change the colour of your concrete. You have many choices on what colour the concrete can be, as well as the overall look. With some finishes, it can even be made to resemble other materials that aren’t concrete.

Concrete can be laid any time of the year, no matter the weather

Concrete needs the proper temperature to dry. If you were to do a concrete job in the middle of a Canadian winter, it’s unlikely that the concrete will dry properly. This is why for those looking to do a project involving concrete, they should take advantage of the warm weather this summer to have their new concrete installed.

Concrete is bad for the environment

Many people think concrete isn’t a great material for the environment. This, however, isn’t the case. Concrete lasts for so long that it has little effect on the environment. Also, concrete can be recycled and reused after it has been torn out or demolished. Commonly, the process of recycling concrete includes pulverizing the rubble to reuse it near the construction site. This helps keep old concrete out of the landfill and is better for the planet.

Concrete isn’t porous

Concrete can still be porous, even though it may not appear so. However, having your concrete surfaces properly sealed with the right chemicals and components will ensure that your concrete surface is less likely to hold water. Sealing your concrete will also make it more resistant to staining and easier to clean. Sealing is especially a good idea if you use your garage as a workshop, and want to be able to clean it and maintain it more easily.

Concrete finishes

Now that you have an idea of the benefits and myths of using concrete, it’s time to look at the many different concrete finishes you can consider when having it installed. Some of these options may be commonly used outdoors, but using them indoors is also an option.

Broom finish

A broom finish is probably the most common concrete finish, especially for residential driveways and sidewalks. The broom finish is done by pouring the concrete onto a surface, then spreading it and finishing the top with a broom. It’s an easy finish to have contractors do, making it a cost-effective, cheaper option. It looks very clean and is a great choice for any driveway, walkway, path, patio, or any other surface.

You do have some variation with the broom finish. Depending on how much you want the grooves to stand out in the concrete, the bristles of the broom can change in thickness. If you’re looking for something simple and clean, thinner bristles will be used. However, if you’re looking for more grooves to be visible, thicker bristles are used. You may want to use a broom with thicker bristles if the surface that the concrete is applied to is commonly wet. Homeowners may consider doing this on something like a patio to keep people from slipping and to easily ground patio furniture.

Trowel finish

A similar method to the above broom concrete finish is the trowel finish. Trowel finishes are done by, in a similar fashion, pouring the concrete onto the desired surface, and smoothing it out with a trowel. A trowel itself is a flat tool. This process is done to create different patterns in the concrete, to make it flat and smooth, or to give it a unique style. You may consider an arch or swirl pattern with the trowel finish.

Depending on how much or how little you want a pattern to stand out, a trowel will be an easy way to make it happen. If you’re looking for a more considerable swirl pattern, for example, the concrete contractors can use a trowel that has a more coarse texture to it. Contrarily, a minimalistic pattern would be done with a smooth-ended trowel. The trowel method of concrete finishing is a way to add a little something to your concrete to make it stand out from the rest and personalize it to your home.

Stamped finish

Stamped concrete is a more decorative method of concrete finishing. If you like the benefits that concrete comes with, but not necessarily the look of the material, this may be the choice for you! Stamped concrete is a process done to make your concrete finish look like a completely different material. Different stencils and carving are done to change the look of the concrete entirely. This can make your concrete look like tile, brick, slate, flagstone, granite, and wood.

This is commonly done on walkways and patios to add character and design. Something else that may be done with stamped concrete is that different colours can be mixed in. This will add to the illusion of different the stones or tiles being used. While this is more work than the broom and trowel finish, and more expensive to install, the end result will make it all worth it.

Rock salt finish

The rock salt concrete finish is different from those already mentioned. The effect of the rock salt leaves less of a smooth finish. This process is done by pouring rock salt on to freshly poured concrete. Afterwards, the rock salt is then cleaned off with water, leaving behind tiny holes or pits on the concrete surface. Similarly to the broom finish with the larger grooves, this finish will make the surface slip-resistant with the texture of the holes left behind. This finish is commonly used alongside pools because it makes it safer around the border of the pool. While you may think water being trapped in the holes is a bad thing, it won’t harm the concrete. The rock salt concrete finish, like most others, is sealed after the application. This way, the concrete will have some resistance against moisture getting in.

Exposed aggregate finish

Exposed aggregate is also a popular concrete finish style among new construction and exterior renovations. This process of concrete finishing is done by placing natural stones or glass into the wet concrete. After, different chemicals are applied to maintain the look and hold of the aggregate used, and the concrete is smoothed out with a trowel. Once the concrete has dried, you’ll have your very own piece of art on your walkway or sidewalk.

Depending on the kinds of materials you use, this can have several different outcomes. If you were to use glass as your aggregate material, the concrete surface will likely be smoother. If you take the route of using natural stones, however, the surface will be rougher. You can put in designs and patterns in your concrete, using different coloured aggregate in different areas. Because aggregate is so versatile when it comes to tones and colours, this is a popular choice for homeowners wanting a unique, attractive concrete finish that compliments the style of their home and landscaping.

Polished finish, for interior concrete

Moving indoors, a popular finished used for concrete flooring is the polished concrete finish. This type of finish is a very simple, very clean choice. It still maintains all the benefits of concrete, but in a less noticeable way. Similar to other finishes previously mentioned, you have some choice with this finish as well. The polished finish is applied by using a floor grinder to evenly smooth and level the floor. With the floor grinder, depending on the size and texture of the discs, you’ll be able to control how smooth the floor is or isn’t.

An added bonus with the polish concrete finish is the addition of a sealer. The sealer protects the floor from stains to keep your concrete floor looking polished and new for many years to come. If you’re looking to install flooring in your home that is simple, easy to maintain, and resistant to stains, the polished concrete may be a great choice for you. It is also a great choice for commercial applications, and popular in spaces like retail stores, markets, and restaurants.

Stained or coloured finish

Concrete has the benefit of coming in a diverse range of colours. With something like concrete, mixing in a colour means that the colour is unlikely to fade because it becomes a part of the concrete itself. If plain grey isn’t appealing to you, why not mix in a different colour? This finish isn’t limited to flooring. Concrete countertops are growing in popularity since they are durable and modern.

With a stained or coloured finish, you’re able to change to look of your countertop to match your cabinets or stand out on its own. This method can also be used to change the look of your concrete countertop. If, again, you aren’t keen on the look of concrete, adding a coloured stain can help the material look like different stones or other materials that aren’t concrete. Once it’s all said and done, a protective seal is placed on top to keep the colour from fading, and further protects your countertops.

This concrete finish isn’t solely done on countertops. It can be done on any concrete surface you may want to colour. It’s worth noting that the coloured or stained finish works better on freshly poured concrete since the colour will mix in more with the concrete material. Older concrete surfaces can also be stained. It may be more likely to fade over time, but applying the colouring with a protective seal on top will keep your concrete coloured for quite some time still.

Acid staining finish

The acid staining finish has many similarities to the above stained or coloured finish. It adds long-lasting colour to your concrete, keeping your colour strong throughout the years. The acid staining has a different overall effect compared to the other finishes. While other stained concrete finishes may give your concrete colour, the acid staining finish goes a step further. Once the stain is added and has dried, the surface will appear like marble. It gives your concrete a different design than you’d have with a regular stain. You’re more likely to see this finish being used for indoor flooring, but it can also be used outdoors too. Your flooring will appear glossier, giving your concrete a colourful boost.

Concrete finishes are a great way to turn boring old concrete surfaces into something more individualistic and special. Using any of the above methods of concrete finishing will ensure that the concrete features of your home will stand out from others, giving your home its own unique look. Take advantage of this summer to improve any concrete features in your home, and make them your own.

Creating the ultimate master bathroom

A master ensuite is a great feature to have in your home. It’s convenient, private, and can be used as your own retreat for relaxing and rejuvenation. If you want to renovate your dated master bathroom, you have plenty of options for both aesthetics and function. From the contractors at GTG Construction in Vancouver, here are some ways to create the ultimate ensuite.

Paint

One of the first changes you can make in your ensuite bathroom renovation is applying a fresh coat of paint on the walls. Depending on your style, this can vary. For example, if you’re going for a more modern look, neutral colours such as greys and creams can be a good choice. Using calming colours like light blues and greens will create a space that’s great for relaxing. To add a pop of colour, choose colourful accessories to use around the room.

Flooring

Like painting, you can let your creativity come through with flooring options in your bathroom. Tile flooring is a great choice for your master bathroom remodel. It comes in many different colours, styles, and shapes, making it a great textile to use. If you want the look of tile, but need something more cost-effective and maintenance-free, consider vinyl. Vinyl tiles mimic the look of natural stone, are easy to clean, and are warmer underfoot. They’re a great alternative for a tighter bathroom renovation budget.

Fixtures

It doesn’t always have to be big things to make a difference in a space. In your ensuite, something as simple as changing the light fixture can make a big impact. Other fixtures that can change the look of your bathroom entirely are the faucets, drawer handles, or the showerhead. Get that rainfall showerhead you’ve always wanted!

Invest in a complete remodel

If you want to make bigger changes, such as a new bathtub, vanity, or shower, more planning will be necessary. You’ll have to take into account the size of the space, and the location of the water lines for these things. Floating vanities or stand-alone tubs are growing in popularity because they transform the space they’re in. Another trendy renovation idea is a walk-in shower. Installing beautiful tile and seamless glass doors can make your bathroom feel larger, and give you the luxury shower you’ve always dreamed of.

What to look for in a professional excavation company

Whether you’re building a new home or adding a new pool, you’ll need to prepare the ground first. Excavation requires the right equipment, knowledge, and skill to do it safely and properly. Hiring a professional excavation company is the way to go, but what should you look for when choosing one?

Maxx Construction in Calgary is a full-service excavation company. They share what to look for in quality excavation companies:

Experience and knowledge

There’s a lot to consider when excavating land, and just as much that can go wrong. The soil beneath the surface may be different, such as muddy or sandy, which can risk collapsing. Buried power or gas lines can be deadly if hit and can cause severe damage. An excavation company should have contractors with the right knowledge to handle all aspects of the job. They’ll know just what to look out for and what safety measures need to be in place. Look for a company with proven skills through various projects and years of experience. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or look at previous testimonials as well.

The right equipment and services

You can’t excavate without the right equipment, and that isn’t just limited to having just one kind of machinery. Excavation work may require a variety of equipment, depending on the type of soil or project. Companies like Maxx Construction offer everything from excavation to water management systems and snow removal. They also provide a range of equipment from bobcats to post holes to handle each project. Having the right equipment will guarantee that your excavation is completed safely and efficiently. Likewise, a company with a range of services is likely going to be a more cost-effective choice. They can help with more than just one project aspect, such as handling the cleanup as well or doing any demolition.

Licensed and insured

A licensed company is proof that their workers have the right skills and knowledge to handle your project safely. It also shows that the contractors are trained to use any equipment safely. Insurance as well helps protect homeowners from any liabilities such as property damage or injury. That gives you peace of mind, but it’s also a legal sign that you are choosing the right company. For example, Maxx Construction is fully licensed and insured and prides themselves on peace of mind solutions.

Recommended and open communicators

Satisfied past customers will likely leave glowing reviews and mention how the work went. Look through old projects or find social media pages to see what people write or say and how the company interacts with customers. Likewise, you want to have clear communication with your excavation contractor. Look for a company that is open and will keep you up to date on the project’s status. That way, any unexpected delays or surprises will be handled with you involved and informed.

Excavating Contractors in Calgary

Maxx Construction prides itself on ensuring peace of mind for every customer and on every project. Their full range of services guarantees that they have the equipment and skills for any job. Whether you need excavation work, foundation repairs, or new basement windows, they have a range of services to help.

Natural stone restoration 101

As much as homeowners would love for their natural stone countertops to stay flawless, eventual wear and tear are inevitable. The good news is that with a little restoration service, your natural stone will look brand new once again. When it comes to the process, you want to ensure a quality finish, which is why a professional is the best way to go.

Shiny Stone Care in Vancouver is a professional natural stone restoration company. They share just how a restoration process works and the benefits of hiring their professionals for the job:

What to expect from a restoration?

Restoration means returning that dull and even damaged natural stone, back to the flawless state it was the day it got installed. First, a professional will look at your countertops to decide what care needs to be applied. Natural stone restoration services include scratch removal, chip repair, honing, polishing, re-grouting or resealing. Sometimes a combination such as polishing and then resealing is recommended to both restore and help keep your countertops in top shape.

The process itself starts with sealing any cracks or removing scratches, typically with a diamond grinder. The surface is then either polished or honed, depending on the material and the homeowner’s preference. If you have tile countertops, the grout will need to either be cleaned if dirty or re-grouted if damaged. Resealing is generally also a recommendation as a final step, but it also depends on how porous the stone is. Some natural stone, such as slate, is non-porous, so it may not need resealing. A professional will let you know what the best option is for your countertops. As well, with a professional, the entire process will typically take between one to two days to complete.

Type of natural stone restoration

Natural stone countertops come in a wide range of different options, including marble, granite, limestone, and terrazzo. While the durability and beauty of natural stone countertops are constant, the restoration process for each can vary.

Marble is one of the most popular countertop materials. Still, it’s susceptible to acidic liquids that can both stain and scratch the surface. Restoration will mean removing any stains and scratches and then resealing the surface. Granite is another popular option but is likewise susceptible to becoming stained if it is not sealed properly and regularly. It’s typically a recommendation to reseal granite countertops every one to two years to help prevent any damage.

Limestone is especially porous, which makes it very prone to stain damage. Even with a proper seal, remove spills immediately and clean only using limestone cleaners with low pH levels. The combined materials in terrazzo make it non-porous, but both limestone and terrazzo can be easily scratched. To restore and protect both, a honed finish and reseal will help reduce the risk of scratches or stains.

Benefits of a professional

Natural stone restoration is something that can and should only be handled by a professional restoration company. While the initial upfront cost is higher, the long-term investment is well worthwhile. According to Home Advisor, professionally restored natural stone can easily extend your countertops’ lifespan by 15 years. Professionals also have the experience, skill, and right tools to handle every step of the restoration process properly. That quality and care will show in your countertops’ finished appearance, and in the value, it will add back into your home. It’ll also save you time and stress, as a professional can handle everything in one or two days instead of the weeks it could take a first-time DIYer.

Countertops in Vancouver

Complete customer satisfaction at the right price and quality are the top goals at Shiny Stone Care. They specialize in restoring your natural stone, whether that means polishing, cleaning, resealing, or repairing any damage. Their skill and attention to detail mean that your natural stone, whether marble, granite, limestone, slate, or terrazzo, is in the right hands.

There’s no stone they can’t restore, so contact Shiny Stone Care today!

Benefits of asphalt roofing

This year might be the year you finally decide to replace your roof. With so many choices out there, it’s difficult to know which material to choose. One material that people typically go to is asphalt roofing, and for good reason. Asphalt roofing has so many benefits that come with it, making it a great choice for your new roof.

Here are some of the many benefits of asphalt roofing, from Lower Mainland Roofing in Surrey, Vancouver.

It looks great!

Asphalt roofing comes in a variety of colours and textures. With such a large selection, it’s easier to choose a colour that matches your home and style. Along with the styles, you can pick a shingle that looks like a material other than asphalt. Depending on the colour, you can find a tile that looks like wood or slate. No matter what style you’re looking for, asphalt roofing can match your vision.

It’s long-lasting

You want a roofing textile that will withstand the crazy Canadian weather. Asphalt roofing has a long lifespan. It’s an incredibly durable roofing material which is why it’s so common among homeowners. It also is weather and fire-resistant. Even when there’s heavy rain or snowfall, the roof will keep going strong.

As a bonus, these shingles can be recycled when the time comes. When recycled, they can be reused for paving or other scrap resources. It’ll help the environment, and be disposed of in a non-harmful way.

It’s easy to maintain

Something you don’t want to spend a lot of time maintaining is your roof. Luckily with asphalt shingle roofing, you won’t have to! The installation process is a smooth one, and if the asphalt is properly installed, you’ll have no worries about it for many years to come. The shingles are tightly sealed to keep the roof from leaking, making it difficult for debris to wreck the shingles. It’s also easy to clean if it is to get dirty.

It’s affordable

If the budget is something you’re concerned about, asphalt tiling has got you covered. Roofing materials vary in price, depending on what you’re looking for or how the material is made. Asphalt roofing is cost-effective, and a great roofing material to use. It also comes with a great manufacturer’s warranty, so if something does go wrong, you can rest at ease knowing you’re covered.

NATURAL GAS OR PROPANE? WHAT TO CHOOSE FOR A BETTER BARBEQUE

kebabs grilling on a barbeque with hand holding a glass of wine.

Summer is coming, and you know what that means–it’s time to bring out the barbeque and get grilling! Whether you are having a quiet backyard barbeque with your family or a big neighbourhood cookout, there is no better way to bring people together than by gathering for a meal outdoors.

The heart of summer entertaining is the barbeque, so it’s important to choose the best equipment and fuel for your lifestyle. We recommend natural gas over propane because of several factors that all come together to create a better barbeque experience.

What’s the Difference?

So, what’s the difference between propane and natural gas? They are made up of different elements and produced using different techniques. Natural gas is extracted from the ground and primarily composed of methane, but can also contain butane, ethane, and pentane.  Propane is produced by the pressurization of isobutane, propane gas, and butane in order to liquefy it.

Environmental Impact

Our treatment of the environment is important now more than ever, so anything you can do to reduce your environmental impact makes a difference. Natural gas is the earth-friendly fuel option because it is cleaner than propane when burned, leaving the air fresher, and healthier for you and the environment. This also means that there is less exhaust which can negatively influence the taste of your food (not to mention the atmosphere of your get together!).

Cost

Natural gas is more cost effective than propane, so you will spend less money on barbeque fuel, which means that you can spend more on your favourite steaks! You will need to pay an initial fee to get your natural gas hooked up, but in the long run you will save more money than you would using propane.

Never Run Out of Fuel

Have you ever been all ready to fire up the barbeque—or maybe even started cooking your dinner—only to realize at the last minute that you’re out of fuel? Now you have to make another trip to the store and delay your dinner (hangry, anyone?). Unlike propane, when you use natural gas you never have to worry about running out of fuel because your line is always on and ready to go.

Simple, Reliable Cooking

One of the challenges of barbequing can be cooking everything evenly because the heat is often inconsistent. Natural gas barbecues will distribute heat more evenly than propane while you’re grilling, which will make it easier to cook your food exactly the way you like it.

There you have it! Natural gas is a clean, dependable fuel that can really bring your next backyard barbeque to the next level.

What is rubber paving?

Are you tired of your cracked and damaged concrete or asphalt driveway? With the arrival of summer, it’s the perfect time to look into paving or repaving your landscaping. Whether it be your driveway, sidewalk, patio, stairs, deck, or any other outdoor surface, take this opportunity to get that project done. Now, your first thought may be to use concrete as the paving material, but there’s another option out there: rubber paving.

Rubber paving is relatively new in the market compared to other paving options. This concrete substitute is growing in popularity across North America over the last 25 years. It is made of rubber, usually recycled tire crumbs, that is combined with adhesive and other ingredients to create a durable, attractive paving surface.

Coming with many benefits, including durability, cost, easy installation and maintenance, customization, and safety, rubber paving is a great paving material fit for any home or commercial building.

The benefits of rubber paving

Rubber paving comes with numerous benefits. It’s a super durable material to use since it’s made to withstand all weather conditions and wear that it faces. It comes in numerous colour options, making it easy to match with your home’s exterior and style. With that comes an increase in curb appeal, replacing the looks of outdated or damaged concrete paving. The rubber paving cost is lower than that of concrete materials since installation and materials are cheaper. It’s also easy to maintain and repair. Contractors have tested and proved these benefits of rubber paving, so you know you’re getting a quality paving job.

Rubber paving is very durable.

Stands up to the weather

Canada is known for its unpredictable weather conditions. When paving your driveway, sidewalks, patios, or any other outdoor surface, you want a material that’s long-lasting, and rubber paving is the way to go. Rubber paving is flexible. The material is made to expand and contract easily with the change of the weather, that way it won’t crack or show other damages. The rubber pavement won’t break down easily, either.

Shovels won’t leave scraping marks on the material. Despite the fact that snow and ice can build up on the rubber pavement, it still provides better traction than normal concrete. Ice is less likely to build upon the surface, but it’s not impossible. Still, you don’t have to worry about salting the icy pavement in the winter, because the salts don’t affect rubber materials. The ice will dissipate, leaving your surfaces intact. Concrete, on the other hand, will start to crack over time from the salt components with freezing and thawing. Rubber is an expandable material that is meant to move with the change of the weather, but concrete was made to keep in place. You want something more breathable to hold its form through the change of the seasons, and rubber will do that for you.

Stands up to typical wear and tear

Weather aside, there are many other factors that typically cause damage to your concrete surfaces. Concrete, over time, can wear down from vehicles and other use. Rubber pavement is made strong, so it won’t dent or buckle. Instead, it bends under pressure while maintaining its strength, no matter how much force is applied.

Durability is something to look for in a paving product. This isn’t something you want to have to replace or repair often. Instead, you want something to withstand the test of time, no matter the weather or external conditions your paving might endure. Rubber paving has this advantage, and it doesn’t stop there.

Rubber paving is soft and safe.

Rubber paving is softer than other paving options. It is slip-resistant, but if a fall does occur, you’ll have a softer landing compared to concrete. This makes it a great choice for playground bases as well. It has some grip to it too, so there’s less slippage with children running and playing. It has impact resistance, almost making the ground have a slight bounce to it. There will be no worrying (or less worrying) about injuries and scrapes with your children then if there was sand or concrete pavement.

Rubber paving is incredibly customizable.

A great thing about a material like this is how easy it is to customize it to fit your needs. You want a paving material that can be easily matched to the style of your home’s exterior and maintain your home’s curb appeal. Luckily, rubber paving gives you that option with its diverse scheme of colours. No matter the colour, black, grey, blue, white, red, beige, whichever color, you won’t have a problem finding the one you want with the rubber material. You also have the ability to pattern the material.

For instance, if you wanted a rubber pavement that looked more like gravel, you could mix different colors within the material for a more realistic appearance. Another idea is to do one base colour, and then outline it with a darker, contrasting colour. That way, the pavement will look framed and modern.

After going through all the trouble of choosing a colour, you want it to last. The colour won’t fade away in the rubber because it’s fade-resistant, and the UV rays from the sun won’t damage the colour either. With rubber pavement, you won’t have to worry about colours and matching your pavement to your home: rubber paving has you covered.

Rubber paving improves your home’s curb appeal.

You want your home to have great curb appeal. Concrete is known for cracking and breaking over time, which harms your home’s curb appeal. It also can allow for grass, weeds, and fungus to grow and damage the concrete further. Rubber paving prevents this from happening since its material has such a stronghold. Not only that but if you’re looking to sell your home, rubber paving will help you do that. It looks good to buyers that the driveway or other outdoor spaces will be properly paved. It also will appeal to families looking for a home that’s safe for children. The safety properties of rubber paving and the grip that comes with it will sway a family more so into purchasing your home.

Rubber paving is a cost-effective material.

Staying on budget is an important part of any home renovation. Rubber paving is an affordable option for any home or commercial building. Installing a product like this is much easier because it moulds to the space it’s put into. You won’t have to worry about the hassle of ripping out and disposing of the old concrete either. Rubber paving can be installed right on top, concealing the old pavement as though it were never there. This saves you money on the cost of installation and labour. That, and it can likely be done in a day or two! With rubber paving, a big project suddenly became and quick, easy, and cheap one.

Rubber paving is easy to maintain and repair.

Rubber paving is very easy to clean. All it takes is a garden hose or a good power washing to take care of any dust, dirt, or debris. But that’s just the surface level. Damage to rubber pavement is highly unlikely since the durability of the pavement is so strong. Still, if it were to happen, the repairs are no sweat. Rubber paving won’t have to be ripped out and completely replaced. Instead, the damaged area is removed and replaced. The gap is filled completely, so there won’t be any marks or weeds growing through the pavement.

While rubber pavement is difficult to damage, there are a few things to watch out for. For example, while most chemical mixtures that may be spilled on the rubber pavement surface won’t do any damage, some will. This could be things like brake fluid and brake cleaner. If your vehicle is known for or found out to be leaking brake fluid, it might be a good idea to park your car somewhere else until the problem is fixed, otherwise, you may need to cut out and repair some of the rubber pavement.

Rubber paving is environmentally friendly.

Rubber paving is made out of discarded rubber materials. Most commonly, it’s manufactured from old tires. Installing this kind of paving into your landscaping actually provides you the opportunity to help the environment, keeping the wasted rubber out of a landfill. Helping the planet may not be on your mind when installing new pavement outside your home, but using recycled materials in rubber paving can contribute to saving the environment. You may not think it’s much, but the reality is, you’d be contributing to the lessening of waste in landfills.

Rubber paving is approved by the professionals.

Rubber paving materials have gone through many tests in order to ensure that it is a prime choice for pavement. Through different tests, it is ensured that rubber paving will resist fungal and bacteria growth. Rain, sun, snow, and every other weather condition are guaranteed to cause no harm to the surfaces. It’s ensured that the strong grip is anti-skid and anti-slip to keep you and your family safe.

How rubber paving is installed:

With all of the advantages of rubber paving, it’s a great choice for any home or commercial building. As previously mentioned, the installation process of rubber paving is a relatively simple one.

Here are the steps of the installation process:

Mix the materials – In this first stage, all the materials are combined. The rubber is mixed in with other components, and the colour is included too.

Add glue – Next, within the mixture from the first step, you want to include a special adhesive. This agent will hold the material together, and give the paving its flexibility. The glue that’s added will also give the mixture its water resistance to ensure it’s long-lasting and weather resistant.

Priming the surface – Before laying down the rubber mixture, you want to prime the surface you’ll be applying the mixture to. Since the rubber paving can be poured on top of an already paved surface, you’ll want to make sure that the rubber will hold to the old pavement.

Pour and level the mixture – Once the above steps are completed, it’s time to pour the mixture into the desired space. After pouring and spreading out the mixture, you’ll want to level it. It’s important to get this part done immediately after pouring it. Level and pack it down as thinly or as thickly as you wish. It’s easy to mould and get it to that perfect height on your sidewalk, path, driveway, stairs, or playground base. It can be easily flattened down to the perfect level with shovels or rollers.

Watch it dry – After your mixture has been mixed and poured, it’s time to let the surface dry. There may be an odour that comes with mixing and pouring. Don’t worry about the smell: it will fade away over time as the material sets. The dry time for rubber paving is short. In 24 hours you can walk on it and in 3 days you can drive and park your vehicles on it.

The installation process can be done by or with the help of contractors. The rubber paving installation costs aren’t as expensive as the cost of other concrete materials since it’s an easier material to maneuver and work with. A contractor will have no issues getting the job done fast.

Why repair or replace driveways, walkways, and patios:

There are many signs that a new driveway or walkway is needed. The main teller is if you’re finding that there are lots of cracks in the concrete. These cracks can lead to further water damage or sunken concrete, leading to further problems. Not only that, but it lowers the property value of your home and diminishes curb appeal. Getting new paving will revamp the look of your home, and keep you and your family out of harm’s way.

Rubber paving is a great choice to repave your outdoor spaces with. Whether it be a sidewalk, driveway, staircase, deck, playground, or any other area, you can count on rubber pavement to be strong and reliable material. It’s extremely durable, long-lasting, environmentally friendly, cost-effective, customizable, and safe for anyone and everyone. If you want a quality paving material, consider using rubber paving!

7 Deck Maintenance Tips

With the temperature warming from spring to summer, we’re moving into the best season for hosting out on the deck. However, after a long winter, your wood deck may need some tender love and care before it’s time to grill out, so we’ve compiled seven tips to help you streamline your springtime deck maintenance.

Tips for Deck Maintenance: Necessary Inspections

#1. Start by testing for rot. – Paying special attention to the areas of the deck that have prolonged exposure to water, use a screwdriver to test for any troublesome soft spots.

#2. Look for insect damage. – Keep your eyes peeled for small holes in your deck and use the butt of your screwdriver to tap the wood. If you see holes, hear hollow sounds, and find discarded wings, you may have insects eating away at your deck.

#3 Inspect for cracks. – An essential part of deck maintenance is merely being mindful of the condition and progression of any cracks in your deck so you can be ready to replace any beams when necessary.

#4. Conduct a water drop test. – Every few years, you’ll need to refinish your deck. A water drop test is an incredibly easy way to test if this is the year for re-treating—simply pour a little water on your deck. If the water absorbs into the wood, you’ll want to reseal your deck this year; if the water beads and rolls off the wood, your deck is set for another year!

Tips for Deck Maintenance: Proactive Practices

#5. Deep clean your deck. – A yearly deck deep clean removes stains, kills mold, and promotes the longevity of your deck. Cleaning solutions designed for deck maintenance can be used while scrubbing the deck with a stiff-bristled brush. Also, you can use a high-pressure washer on a low setting (pressure washers are usually available for rental at hardware stores) or a basic garden hose outfitted with a “fireman” nozzle for a vigorous rinse. Pro-tip: When using a chemical cleaner, don’t forget to cover any nearby shrubs or flowers so that they don’t get damaged while you clean your deck.

#6. Finish your deck. – Finishes and sealants that lay over the top of the wood (lacquers, varnishes, etc.) will inevitably crack and peel; look instead for a finish that will soak into the wood itself.

#7. Don’t forget to regularly sweep. – Not only does periodically sweeping your deck keep it looking sharp, but it will also help stave off the premature aging that often comes with dead leaves and dirt buildup.
